1. PURPOSE OF THE METHOD STATEMENT

The purpose of this method statement is to outline the sequences and methods of works intended to be
used for transformer installation and routine testing works.

The subcontractor reserves the right to adapt the methods of execution as contained in this document
from time to time according to the specific site conditions.

2. SCOPE OF WORKS

The scope of works comprises:

Transformer installation and routine testing works

3. RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 Operation Manager : Overall In-charge of the projects and reports to the
General Manager.

3.2 Projects Manager : Leads the entire construction activities and enforces
strict adherence of all project requirements and reports
to the operation Manager.

3.3 Engineers : Ensure that all related works are carried out in
accordance with the approved drawings, specifications,
schedule, quality and safety. They will report to the
project manager.

3.4 QC Engineer : Ensure that all related works are carried out in
accordance with the approved drawings, specifications,
schedule, quality and safety. Conduct inspection on all
site work installation / testing including factory equired
inspections. Generates daily and weekly reports
highlighting restraints / concerns on sites. Functioned
administratively under project manager but report
directly to QA / QC department head.

3.5 Testing Engineer : Ensures that all the required tests as specified on the
project specification and contractual obligation are
properly executed in compliance to quality, safety and
standard requirement. He will report to the Project
Manager.

4. METHOD STATEMENT FOR TRANSFORMER TOUTINE TESTING

PRE CHECKS:
 Check if the transformer earthing is done properly. If not, ensure temporary earthing to be
provided for testing purpose and permanent earthing is in place before final commissioning.
 Ensure the transformer is isolated from the HV side cables and LV side Bus ducts.
 The name plate will be checked against equipment data sheet to confirm conformity with the
approved documents.
 Conform installation is approved by project consultant and obtain copy of approval for records.
 Obtain copies of factory test reports for reference and records.
 Record factory setting of offload tap changer.

Testing and Commissioning Procedures

INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST
IR will be measured with 5000 V DC in HV side and 1000 V DC in LV side. The positive terminal of the
megger is connected to the HV winding and the negative terminal is connected to ground. Measure the IR
value of HV – Earth value. Similarly, the positive terminal is connected to LV side and the negative
terminal is connected to ground. Measure the IR value of LV – Earth value. Then positive terminal is
connected to HV side and negative terminal is connected to LV side. Measure the IR value of HV – LV
Value. Note down the IR values for 15 secs, 1 min and 10 minutes. The polarization Index value will be
calculated as follows. IR at 10 min
Polarization Index value (PI) = -----------------
IR at 1 min

This value shall be greater than 1.2.

VOLTAGE RATIO TEST

The transformer windings voltage ratio shall be checked at the site by applying a 3-phase voltage on HV
winding and measuring the corresponding LV voltages. The ratio between applied voltage and measured
voltage is the ratio of the transformer.

Primary voltage
Voltage Ratio = -------------------
Secondary voltage

Tabulate the readings in the test report. Calculate the actual ratio and compare with theoretical ratio repeat
the test for all taps of the transformer.

MAGNETIZING CURRENT TEST

Apply a 3-phase voltage to the primary side of the transformer; the secondary shall be kept open.
Measuring the exciting current by connecting an ammeter in series with phases and note down the values.
The test values shall be compared with manufacture test report data. Repeat the test for all taps of the
transformer.

WINDING RESISTANCE TEST

The winding resistance test for transformer shall be done by milli-volt drop method. This test shall be
done by applying DC current and measure the voltage drop at each tap. The ambient temperature will be
noted. The test values shall be compared with manufacture test report data.

VECTOR GROUP TEST

The vector group shall be checked with this test at normal tap. The R-phase of the HV winding and r-
phase of the LV winding is connected together. Apply a 3-phase voltage applied on HV winding. The
voltage is measured as in the test format. The conditions to be checked as listed in the format.

SHORT CIRCUIT IMPEDANCE TEST

Apply a 3-phase voltage to the primary side of the transformer; the secondary side should be shorted for
all phases. Measuring the short circuit current of primary and secondary side of the transformer by AC
clamp meter and also measuring the applied voltage by multi meter and note down the values. Impedance
value will be calculated as follows

(Applied voltage x Rated current)

% Impedance = -------------------------------------------
(Rated voltage x measured current)

MAGNETIC BALANCE TEST

Apply a 400 V to R and Y phases of primary side of the transformer. The secondary side shall be kept
open. Measuring the voltage for other two phases (YB & BR) by multi meter. Note down the values and
add the measured voltages. It will become equal to applied voltage. Repeat the test for other two phases
and note down the values.

Applied voltage (R and Y) = Measured voltages (Y and B + B and R)

Similarly check the secondary side of the transformer.

OPEN CIRCUIT TEST

Apply a 400 V, 3- phase supply to secondary side of the transformer; the primary side shall be kept open.
Measuring the current of the secondary side by AC clamp meter and note down the values. The test values
shall be compared with manufacture test report data.

FUNCTIONAL CHECK

The Alarm & Trip contact of winding temperature to be checked as per setting value of individual. The
ON/OFF operation of FAN to be checked as per setting.

5. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

The following tools and equipment will be used:

1) BDV Test kit

2) Oil sample bottles
3) Hygrometer
4) Hand tools
5) Accessories i.e. hoses, cables, etc
6) Vacuum gauge
7) Crane/Forklift
8) Bedford / HI-UP truck

6. SAFETY AND RISK ASSESSMENT

The subcontractor will be responsible for all the necessary safety measures at all time. All works related
will be executed in accordance with the client’s and Main contractor’s HSE plan.

The work will only proceed when a permit to work (PTW) has been obtained or when required. The
PTW will be kept on the site for consultation during the testing works.
