Solving Random Variables
Solving Random Variables
SHARE!
Instructions:
1.This activity will be done in pairs.
2.Each pair will be constructing a probability distribution
for each random variable 𝑋 to be provided by your
teacher.
3.After creating the probability distribution for each
random variable, check the validity of the distribution
by checking the two properties mentioned in the last
lesson.
Problem:
The random variable 𝑋 represents the
number of heads that occur when you
toss 4 coins at the same time.
SOLVING RANDOM
VARIABLES
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students are
expected to:
1. accurately solve possible values of a
random variable; and
2. correctly solve real-life problems involving
the random variables.
WHEEL DECIDE
Instructions:
Before proceeding to solving random
variables, the class will have a short game
where the teacher will ask to questions/pick
up dares to chosen students using the wheel.
SOLVING RANDOM
VARIABLES
Example 1: Given the probability distribution of a discrete
random variable 𝑋 below, find 𝑃(𝑋 = 3).
Solution:
In a probability distribution for a discrete random variable,
the sum of all the probabilities of the outcomes should be
equal to 1. That is σ 𝑃 𝑋 = 1. Add all the probabilities and
equate it to 1 to find the missing value.
Example 1: Given the probability distribution of a discrete
random variable 𝑋 below, find 𝑃(𝑋 = 3).
Example 2:
Given the probability distribution of a discrete random
variable 𝑋 below, find 𝑃(𝑋 < 3).
STAND HIGH
Instructions:
a.The teacher will be posting a problem in the board
and will give the students some time to answer it.
b.After that, the teacher will shout “go” and the
groups will stand simultaneously.
c.The first group to stand will have the chance to
answer the problem.
d.If they got the correct answer, they would have
additional 5 points.
Problems:
1.Given the probability distribution of a discrete random
variable 𝑋 below, find 𝑃(𝑋 = 1).
II. Read the following question and solve for what is asked.
The number of patients that arrive in the emergency room of a certain hospital
in a day is a random variable represented by 𝑋. The following is the probability
distribution for 𝑋.
