3. Comparisons
The job of the coordinate conjunctions (and, but, or) is to join together equal
expressions. In other words, what is on one side of these words must be parallel to
what is on the other side.
subordinate clauses, or main clauses; they just must join together 2 of the same
things.
2 Nouns You can choose from activities such as hiking and kayaking.
2 Verbs : He only eats and sleeps when he takes a vacation.
2 Adjectives : The exam that he gave was short but difficult.
2 phrases : The checks will be ready not at noon but at 1:00.
2 clauses : They are not interested in what you say or what you do.
The Paired Conjunctions both...and, either...or, and not only...but also require
between 2 things, and those similarities or differences must be in parallel form. You
can recognize a comparison showing how 2 things are different from the er...than or
the more...than. For example:
The work that I did is similar to the work that you did.
