Midterm Programming Activity #6

The document discusses how resistors can be connected in series or parallel in a circuit. It provides the formulas for calculating the total resistance of resistors connected in series by adding the individual resistances, and for resistors in parallel by taking the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocals of the individual resistances. As examples, it calculates the total resistances of sets of resistors in both series and parallel configurations.

The field of electronics makes use of different electrical components.

One such component is the

resistor.

When connecting resistors in a circuit, they can be connected in series or in parallel.

To compute the total resistance of resistors connected in series and in parallel, the following
computations are used:
1. SERIES CONNECTION
𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 = 𝑹𝟏 + 𝑹𝟐 + ⋯ + 𝑹𝑵
2. PARALLEL CONNECTION
𝟏
𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 =
𝟏 𝟏 𝟏
+ + ⋯+
𝑹𝟏 𝑹𝟐 𝑹𝑵
For instance, if we have four resistors with the following ratings (measured in ):
2.34, 4.23, 6.72, 5.56

Connecting them in SERIES yields a total resistance (measured in ) of …

𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 = 𝟐. 𝟑𝟒 + 𝟒. 𝟐𝟑 + 𝟔. 𝟕𝟐 + 𝟓. 𝟓𝟔 = 𝟏𝟖. 𝟖𝟓

On the other hand, connecting them in PARALLEL yields a total resistance (measured in ) of …
𝟏
𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 = = 𝟏. 𝟎𝟎𝟕𝟔𝟑𝟓𝟏𝟔𝟖
𝟏 𝟏 𝟏 𝟏
+ + +
𝟐. 𝟑𝟒 𝟒. 𝟐𝟑 𝟔. 𝟕𝟐 𝟓. 𝟓𝟔

Similarly, given these four resistors with the following ratings (measured in ):

3.34, 2.23, 7.20, 6.82

The total resistance of these resistors when connected in SERIES or PARALLEL configuration would yield
19.59 and 0.967728063 respectively.
