Filipino culture places great importance on family and social harmony. There is a strong sense of family duty and responsibility. Not bringing shame to one's family is important to avoid losing "hiya" or face. The value of "pakikisama" emphasizes getting along with others and preserving harmonious relationships through cooperation and kindness. the supernatural spirits which will take care of

This refers to a ‘’debt of gratitude’’ which is


difficult or almost impossible to
quantify.

is the feeling of high self-steem and is shown in the
sensitivity of a person to hurt feelings and insults, real or
imagined.

refers to the belief that all events are naturally and
supernaturally predetermined;
▣ Itrefers to smooth interpersonal relationship,
such as the use of polite language, soft voice,
gentle manner, euphemisms and ambiguous
expression , all of which are intended to avoid
directness or frankness.

Close family ties
Filial piety is an important concept in
Filipino culture. ... Many Filipinos hold the
belief that each family member has several
duties and responsibilities they must
uphold. Observing one's duties and
responsibilities is important in order to
correctly respect others and to ensure
harmony among family members

Hiya – It is a Filipino value that is difficult to
translate. Literally it has several meanings such as
shy, timid, sensitive rather than ashamed.
Filipinos believe they must live up to the accepted
standards of behaviour and make it a point not to
cause another person’s embarrassment. Each is
anticipated to have hiya in the way they behave to
win respect from the community. This is a value
that gives a Filipino a sense of social decency and
politeness.

“Amor propio” is Spanish word which


means self –love; a sense of self-esteem
or self respect that prevents a person
from swallowing his pride. It includes
sensitivity to personal insult or affront. A
slight remark or offensive gesture, though
insulting, would not trigger a sense of
“amor propio”. The stimulus that sets it
off is only that which strikes at the
Filipino’s most highly valued attributes.
For example, an abandoned wife will
refuse to seek financial support from a
husband who has abandoned her no matter
how financially destitute she is on this
principle. Amor propio in short means ego
defensiveness, dignity or one’s personal
pride akin to the traditional oriental
attitude of having ‘face’.

▣ Pakikisama – There is
no exact English
translation for this word. It means getting
along with others to preserve a harmonious
relationship. It invites the Filipinos to do
good and to be a nice companion. The value
of pakikisama results in camaraderie and a
feeling of closeness to one another.
Pakikisama is also sharing one’s wealth,
talent, time and self with fellow human
beings and working together for a common
good. This value bridges the gap between
cultures.
▣ Occurs when two people or
organization agree to become
regular customer and supplier.
A Suki Relationship is the
relationship between a
customer and a trusted
supplier.
▣ It is a relationship of mutual
respect between these two
people. If you develop a suki
relationship with some
vendors, you will get the best
prices, the best quality, and
a true friend who will look
out for you.

▣ Utang na loob” or debt of


gratitude – Filipinos always
recognize one’s
indebtedness. This means
that he owed to a person
who has helped him through
the trials he had undergone.
He repays that person in
whatever kind, whatever
time and situation. It is one
way of showing deep
appreciation for lending out
a hand.

Filipinos. This is the practice of


putting off things for another day
than doing it today.

procrastination. I know this is a
common bad trait to most of us
but
this habit has been passed on from
generations. This can also be

with our disregard of time.

beyond the deadline or going beyond
the meeting time (always late).

bahala na is being used in
everyday conversation. It
means “to leave one’s life or
event in the care of God”
