Control Lab 3

The document describes analyzing the step response of two transfer functions. For the first transfer function, the peak value, final value, peak time, rise time, settling time, and percentage overshoot are obtained from the output response graph. For the second transfer function, these same characteristics are calculated directly from the transfer function and compared to the first results.

Task 1

a) Obtain Peak Value (Vp), Final Value (Vfinal), Peak Time (Tp), Rise time (Tr),
Settling time (Ts) and Percent of overshoot (%OS) from output response
graph.

Peak Value (Vp), Y=0.54

Final Value (Vfinal), Y=0.4
Peak Time (TP), X=1.029

Rise Time (Tr),

Final value*0.9; Y=0.36, X=0.574
Final value*0.1; Y=0.04, X=0.151
Rise Time = 0.574 - 0.151 = 0.423s
Settling Time (Ts),
2% criteria,
Final value*0.98, Final value*1.02 = Y(0.392, 0.408)
Ts = 3.523

Percentage of overshoot (%OS)

(Peak Value – Final Value) / Final Value x 100%
(0.54 – 0.4) / (0.4) x 100 = 35%
b) B
c) Obtain step response for the following transfer function and then compare your result
with (a). (Hint – Comment on Vp, Vfinal, Tp, Tr, Ts, and %OS )

Peak Value (Vp), Y=1.249

Final Value (Vfinal), Y=1
Peak Time (TP), X=0.689

Rise Time (Tr),

Final value*0.9; Y=0.9, X=0.394
Final value*0.1; Y=0.1, X=0.098
Rise Time = 0.394 - 0.098 = 0.296s
Settling Time (Ts),
2% criteria,
Final value*0.98, Final value*1.02 = Y(0.98, 0.102)
Ts = 2.109

Percentage of overshoot (%OS)

(Peak Value – Final Value) / Final Value x 100%
(1.249 – 1) / (1) x 100 = 24.95%
d)
e) For a closed loop system with unity feedback and transfer function below, simulate the
output response of the system given a step input.
