DEVICES
Input Devices
I. Keyboard
Input Devices
II. Mouse
• A mouse is a pointing
device. It is used to
move the cursor, draw
sketches/diagrams and
select items visible on
the screen.
• It is used to point out
the location where you
want to input the
information.
Input Devices
III. Joystick
• Joystick is a pointing
device consisting of a
small, vertical lever
mounted on a base that
is used to steer the
screen cursor around.
• It can be moved in all
directions. It is mainly
used in computer aided
designing(CAD) and
playing computer games.
Input Devices
IV. Trackball
• A trackball is a
pointing device
which looks like a
mouse.
• It is used to move
the cursor and works
like a mouse.
Input Devices
V. Touch Screen
• Touch screen is a special
Video Display Unit(VDU)
device, which has a
touch sensitive screen.
• When a finger touches
the screen, interrupted
light beams can pinpoint
the location selected on
the screen. A touch
screen can detect
exactly where its surface
has been touched.
Input Devices
VI. Magnetic Stripe Reader
• This device reads
information magnetically
encoded on the back of
plastic cards, such as
identification badges or
credit cards.
Input Devices
VII. Digitizer and stylus
• A digitizer or a
graphic tablet is used
to create drawings
and pictures.
• Instead of drawing
on the screen, a
separate tablet is
used on which a
special stylus(digital
pen) is moved.
Input Devices
VIII. Scanner
• A scanner digitizes
hard-copy photos and
documents and stores
them electronically.
• A scanner reads text,
photographs or
graphics from paper,
which are then
converted to digital
data for processing,
storage and output.
Input Devices
IX. Bar Code Reader
• Bar code reader is an
optical scanner used for
reading bar-coded data,
that is, data in the form
of light and dark lines.
• Bar-coded data is
generally used for
labelling goods,
numbering books or
encoding ID or A/C
numbers.
Input Devices
X. Microphone
• A microphone is a
special multimedia input
device used to store
voice data consisting of
recorded message or
synthesized sound.
• They convert sound
waves into analog
electrical signals, which
are further converted to
digital form in a PC
Input Devices
XI. Web Camera
• A web camera is
used to capture and
store digital data in
the form of still and
video images.
• They have become
very popular on the
internet for chatting.
Input Devices
XI. KVM Switch
• a hardware device
that can be used to
control more than
one computer while
using a single
keyboard, monitor,
and mouse
Most Recent Input Devices
• NFC devices and terminals Near Field Communication
(NFC): tap to pay devices. Read and write to NFC chips
• Facial recognition scanners: devices identifying a user
based on unique facial features
• Fingerprint scanners: devices identifying a user based
on unique fingerprint
• Voice recognition scanners: devices identifying a user
based on unique voice
• Virtual reality headset used with computer games,
simulators, and training applications with virtual reality
functionalities. Include head-motion and eye-motion
tracking sensors.
Output Devices
Output Devices
• An output device takes binary information from the
computer and converts it into a form that is easily
understood by the user.
• Some Output devices are as follows:
– Monitors -VR Headsets
– AR Headsets
– Speakers
– Printers
– Touch screens
– Plotter
– Projectors
Output Devices
I. Monitor
• The Visual Display
Unit, commonly know
as monitor is a very
important output
device. It is an output
device that displays
information in pictorial
form.
• Picture quality of
monitor is called
Resolution.
Output Devices
II. Printer
• Printers are hard copy output devices.
• They are used to print paper copies
of the text, pictures or any other
data.
• We have Colour printers and Black &
White Printers
• Examples include Inkjet, Laser, 3D,
etc
• An inkjet printer produces hard copy
by spraying ink onto paper.
• A laser printer is a printer that uses a
focused beam or light to transfer text
and images onto paper.
Output Devices
III. Plotter
• A plotter is used to
print high quality
graphics and
drawings such as a
construction plan for
a building or
blueprints.
Output Devices
IV. Speaker
• Speakers are used to
take any audio output or
result from the
computer
• Most computers and
mobile devices have
audio support either
integrated into the
motherboard or on an
adapter card.
Output Devices
V. Touch Screen
• These are special
monitors which are
used not only to
display information
but also to take any
input. For example,
those used in ATM
machines.
VR and AR Headsets
• Virtual Reality (VR) uses computer technology to
create a simulated, three-dimensional
environment.
• A VR headset completely encases the upper
portion of users’ faces, not allowing in any
ambient light from their surroundings.
• Augmented Reality (AR) uses similar technology
but superimposes images and audio over the real
world in real time.
• AR can provide users with immediate access to
information about their real surroundings.
• An AR headset usually does not close off ambient
light to users, allowing them to see their real-life
surroundings.
Von Neumann Architecture
• The template for all modern
computers is the Von
Neumann architecture,
detailed in a 1945 paper by
Hungarian mathematician
John von Neumann.
• This describes a design
architecture for a computer
with a processing unit
consisting of :
• an arithmetic logic unit
• a control unit
• a memory
• and input and output
mechanisms.
