FIDE World Cup 2023 (Games and Results)

FIDE World Cup 2023

Mark Crowther - Thursday 24th August 2023

The FIDE World Cup took place in Baku, Azerbaijan Sunday 30th Jul to Thursday 24th Aug 2023. The event
is a qualifier for the FIDE Candidates tournament as well as being worth winning in its own right. Magnus
Carlsen is the top seed, he had never won the event and clearly saw this as something he would like to
rectify. His leading rivals were Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Anish Giri, Wesley
So, Teimour Radjabov. D Gukesh, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in a strong field. Alongside was an equally well
represented women's field including World Champion Ju Wenjun. Magnus Carlsen won the event playing a
lot of the younger generation on his way to the title. Carlsen was almost eliminated by Vincent Keymer but
managed to come back when he looked down and out. This isn't an event that's won without a little luck
but Carlsen was impressive throughout. He was mildly ill during the classical games against
Praggnanandhaa but won the tie-breaks comfortably. Fabiano Caruana finished third. Aleksandra
Goryachkina won the women's final.
