Discussion 6 - Final

This experiment aims to evaluate the lumped capacitance model of transient heat conduction and calculate the heat transfer coefficient (h) for cooling and heating. For heating, the Biot number was calculated to be 0.1426, larger than the threshold of 0.1 but the lumped capacitance model was still applied. The heat transfer coefficient for heating was calculated to be 3812 W/m2°C. For cooling, the Biot number was 0.05, below 0.1, and the heat transfer coefficient was calculated to be 1331.13 W/m2°C. Comparing experimental and theoretical temperature values showed similarity, validating the model.

Discussion:

This experiment aims to evaluate the lumped capacitance model of transient heat
conduction, then investigate whether the heat transfer coefficient (h) for both cooling
and heating can be calculated using this principle. In order to calculate the heat
transfer coefficient (h), Biot number (Bi) should be found. Biot number is considered
❑❑
to be the slope of the graph between temperature profile (ln ⁡ versus Fourier
❑❑❑❑
number. For heating process, it is found that the Biot number is equal to 0.1426 as
shown in figure (2). Biot number supposed to be less than 0.1 so that lumped
capacitance model can be applied [1]. Even though Biot number for heating was
larger than 0.1, lumped capacitance calculations has been applied to this process

(assumption). The heat transfer coefficient for heating is equal to (3812 ❑ ).

Moreover, another graph is plotted between temperature and time, to compare
between theoretical and experimental values. Figure (3) represent this graph for the
heating processprocess, and it is noticed that temperature is increasing with time and
it keeps increasing until an equilibrium with the hot source is reached. It has been
observed that the figure of Biot number is equal to (0.05000) in the cooling process
and it described in figure (4) and since Bi < 0.10, the lumped capacitance model can
be applied [23]. The heat transfer coefficient transmission factor for cooling heating

has been calculated and its value is (1331.13 ❑ 000W/ (m^2.℃)). In order to

compare the values of theory and experimentation of temperature, a graph was created
showing the relationship between temperature and time. In figure (5), there is a graph
of the cooling process, the temperature has been found to decrease with over time and
the temperature continues to decline until it reaches equilibrium with the cold source.
Heat transfer coefficient for heating and cooling represent high values and this is mean that
there is a forced convection and a phase change [1].Heat transfer coefficient for heating is
higher than that for cooling and this is mean that there is no forced convection in cooling
process. Since there is no forced convection, then there is no phase change [3].

Comparing the values for experimental and theoretical temperature for both
processprocesses show the similarity in those values which indicated accuracy. The error
found in the value of Biot number for heating process could be due to deviation in the
calculated data. Which result a larger value than expected.
