Systems Engineering Concept

 SYSTEMS ENGINEERING is an interdisciplinary approach

encompassing the entire technical effort to evolve and verify an
integrated and life-cycle balanced set of system product and
process solutions that satisfy customer needs.
MIL-STD-499B, 1993

Systems Engineering Concept

 SYSTEMS ENGINEERING is the application of scientific and engineering

efforts to

a. transform an operational need into a description of system

performance parameters and a system configuration through
through the
use of an Iterative
iterative process of definition, synthesis, analysis,
design, test, and evaluation;

b. integrate related technical parameters, and ensure compatibility

of all physical, functional, and program interfaces in a manner
that optimizes the total system definition and design;

c. integrate reliability, maintainability, safety, survivability, human,

and other such factors into the total engineering effort to meet
cost, schedule, and technical performance objectives.

Systems Engineering Concept

 SYSTEMS ENGINEERING is an interdisciplinary field of engineering, that

focuses on the development and organization of complex artificial
systems.

 Systems engineering integrates other disciplines and specialty groups

into a team effort, forming a structured development process that
proceeds from concept to production to operation and disposal.

 Systems engineering considers both the business and the technical

needs of all customers, with the goal of providing a quality product
that meets the user needs

 Systems engineering techniques are used in complex projects.

 Systems engineering uses a host of tools that include modeling &

simulation, requirements analysis, and scheduling to manage
complexity.

 Technical performance measures are used to track
the progress of design and manufacturing
 Measures are often related to the process, not the
product.

Sequential vs Concurrent Engineering

 Often the product design process and the design of its manufacturing
system must be carried out simultaneously; hence the need for the
study of the concurrent engineering to effectively perform this
integration.
 This requires a Design-Build Team.

 Concurrent Engineering is a systematic approach to the integrated,

concurrent design of products and their related processes, including
manufacture and support.

 This approach is intended to cause the developers, from the outset,

to consider all elements of the product cycle from concept through
disposal, including quality, cost, schedule and user requirements.

Concurrent Engineering At Boeing

 With increased competition, a focus on customers, and reduced

cycle times, skills from all functional groups are needed at all stages
of a product’s development.

 This requires a strategy based on the concept of concurrent

engineering.

 Concurrent engineering is the effective simultaneous development

of different disciplinary subsystems required for a product launch.

 It focuses on merging technical and business specialties to produce

quality products on short time scales.

 At the heart of concurrent engineering is the idea of

multifunctional teams, also known as integrated product teams.
