Set on a highway-facing plot in Panchkula, this house is designed

to create possibilities for everyday interactions. The façade of the
building creates an illusion as it looks like a skewed elevation. But
in reality, it is made out of a rectangular plan. The residence, also
called the ‘350-day-year-a house’, draws focus on the essentials
over the ancillaries.

Project 91/4 is situated in the peripheral area of Sector-4 in Panchkula.

It is a corner plot of 550 sq yards in an urban row house setting.

The client is a hotelier and wanted to build a house for a small family of 4- a
couple, two teenage children and visiting parents. The client wanted to keep
it private, while most socialising activities would not be at the residence.
The house is primarily designed around the daily activities of the occupants.

The ground floor consists of 2 bedrooms, one for guests and one as the day room.
The planning is laid around a tall central courtyard, which houses an art installation.
It is a specifically designed act that offers views for strategic points around it. It
even has a water element that activates the courtyard and its neighbouring spaces.
The formal living area has a connection to the dining area which, lets the guests
access dining directly. The mandir positioned next to the courtyard, wrapped
in fabric around wooden rafters, creates a soft puja space of monolithic quality.

The kitchen, living and dining form a long connected space in the north-
western part of the house, which keeps the occupants in close proximity most
of the time. Alongside this area is a narrow road. Hence, uniformly spaced long
slit windows provide privacy from the street while allowing in the sunlight.

Both the bedrooms are on the first floor, in which one of the master bedrooms occupies
the entire front of the house. It is a suite size room and has a spacious closet and terrace
along with it. The rear bedroom is designed like a lounge room that caters to different
age groups or the women of the house who prefer to sit in a separate space during any
social gathering. And the space outside the room act as a congregation space for an
occasional close get-together. The area is cosy with a small console bar and a home
theatre.

The main living floors are raised by 3’, making the height about 13’ on average
below the false ceiling. The increased height makes the spaces look larger in
volume. This also helps create comfortable spaces on the lines of passive cooling.

The terrace splits into two levels. The higher one houses all the services, domestic
help quarters and the store. The lower one is used as a terrace to enjoy views
from amid the green plantations. It forms a nice space during the mornings
in summer and evenings for the winter sun. The materials used needed lower
maintenance keeping in as a view with the low frequency of usage of the terrace.

The façade primarily is bold and minimal. The angular wall in the façade is a reflection
to make the elevation look broader than it is. Muted colours such as white natural stone,
grey ceramic tiles and metallic copper finish blend create a subtle contrast for the house.

The interiors have been designed to enhance the capture of sunlight

with a subtle and muted colour palette. The use of distinct chandeliers
and artworks is done in all the spaces to bring life to the built volumes.

In conclusion, eclecticism has been carried out to enhance the transitional relationship
of space in a calm and serene yet a focal location. This is done to derive the balance
between the soul and silence of the space, generating a homely yet ecstatic look, thereby
satisfying the client’s taste and artistic nature of architects.
