Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the TLE- Tailoring Senior High School Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
Module on Prepare and Cut Materials for Athletic Shorts!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from
public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the
module:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also
need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own
learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the
tasks included in the module.

What’s In
ACTIVITY 1. WHERE WE ARE NOW
Before we head on to our next lesson on cutting the fabric for our athletic shorts, let
us have a self-check of the needed activities that we have accomplished.
INSTRUCTION: Answer YES if you have already done what is asked. Answer NO if you
haven’t finish it yet. Write your answers on the space provided after the question.
1. Have you taken your client’s body measurement? ____________
2. Do you already have a final design for your athletic shorts? ________
3. Have you created a project plan for your athletic shorts? _____________
4. Have you finished drafting the Block pattern for your athletic shorts? _______
5. Have you finished cutting the final pattern for you athletic shorts? ________
In case you answered NO to some of the questions asked, please find time to finish
the activities on Module 1 and 2. You cannot proceed to the next step of sewing athletic shorts
if you haven’t done all prior tasks.
What’s New
In sewing athletic shorts, most fabrics need to be perpared first before cutting to
ensure that the garment fits perfectly and to have a perfect output.
Fabric for a garment must be grain-perfect before it is cut. Preparing the fabric is the
first step in constructing a well-fitted garment. It is important to do it well.
4
www.shsph.blogspot.com
The following are the pre-construction processes in sewing a garment.
• Straightening. Garments needed to be washed, dried, and pulled so they can be
straightened. Garments needed to be straightened before cutting. Cut ends should
likewise be examined. This includes a crosswise thread and cutting it. All corners
should form a right angle to each other. The lengthwise and crosswise grain lines
should be at right angle to each other. Resin-treated fabrics which are finished off can
be pulled to be straightened. The fabrics may be cut without straightening or shrinking
since their shape will not change.
• Shrinking. Fabrics which have not been shrunk at the factory should be shrunk before
cutting. If you need to shrink the fabric, you can straighten it at the same time.
Washable fabrics like cotton, which have been given a crease-resistance, usually do
not need to be shrunk since the finish reduces potential shrinkage.

SELF CHECK
FILL IN THE BLANKS. Fill in the blanks with the missing word or phrase to
make the statement correct.
1. Fabrics for sewing needed to be prepared before cutting to ensure that the
garment ______________.
2. __________________ includes pulling both ends of the garment.
3. _____________is a kind of fold where the garment is folded lengthwise at the
center with selvages together.
4. _________________ is a kind of fabric that does not need to be shrunk since
the finish reduces potential shrinkage.
5. _____________is a kind of fold where the garment is folded lengthwise with the
raw edges meeting at the center.
What is It
6
www.shsph.blogspot.com
5. Stretch and pull gently but firmly until the edge and selvages are even when the
material is folded in half lengthwise.
Tips to help you determine the right and the wrong side of the
fabric:
1. The selvage, or the finished edge of the fabric, is
smoother on the right side.
2. Loose thread ends can be found on the wrong side of
the fabric.
3. Fabrics are folded right side in.
4. Prints are clearer and brighter on the right side.
Pin the pattern.
7
www.shsph.blogspot.com
• Graining arrow
This is pinned parallel to the selvage. Pin one end of the
arrow first and measure from the pin to the selvage. Pin
arrows for all pattern pieces and pin all corners and edges to
save time and effort.

Pointers in Cutting the Fabric
Properly cut garment pieces will ensure a well-finished project. It is necessary to use the
appropriate tools in cutting the project. Shears with bent handles and is in 6-12-inch length,
and those with 7-8-inch length are often used in cutting fabrics. Scissors with 5-inch length
with one blunt point are used to prevent the snugging of trimmed fabrics. Here are some
pointers on cutting the fabric:
1. Place the fabric and pattern flat on the table. Avoid moving
or lifting the fabric while cutting.
4. Cut the fabric starting from the widest to the narrowest part of
the pattern. Begin cutting at an edge which is easy to reach.
9

Transferring marks into the Fabric
After cutting the garment pieces, you are ready to transfer your pattern marks to the
fabric. Use tailor’s chalk or dressmaker’s carbon paper aided by a tracing wheel. Whichever
tool you decide to use, make sure that you transfer all important pattern marks clearly and
accurately. The following are the general details to be marked:
