What is It

Athletic Shorts
The importance of physical exercise in promoting health and wellness has
encouraged people to engage in sports and made them realize to include athletic short
pants in their closet. Such shorts are practical, comfortable, and trendy when doing
exercises than using trousers which cover the entire legs.
Athletic shorts have different designs, with well-constructed parts, and are
designed for comfort, durability, and are loose enough for body movements. These
garments extend down to the knee and are worn by both men and women.
Athletic short pants can be made of light, synthetic materials such as jersey,
and are appropriate for sports activities while those made of cotton materials are
suitable for work activities, the type of cloth used in constructing short pants depends
on their style and the occasion they are to be worn. One should design the athletic
shorts to suit different sport activities, the style, the need, and the weather condition.

New Terms:

• Basic/block pattern refers to the pattern that contains the exact body
measurements and reflects no definite style.
• Clip refers to a short cut made with a point of pair of scissors into the seam
allowance.
• Cutting line a heavy solid line in a final pattern that indicates the exact line
where the pattern should be cut.
• Facing a piece of fabric stitched to a raw edge of a garment for the purpose of
finishing it.
• Final pattern refers to the style of the garment to be constructed and contains
the necessary seam allowances that should be found in the finished garment.

4
www.shsph.blogspot.com
• Grain line refers to heavy solid line with arrows at each end.
• Hemline is a line that indicates where the hem will be turned.
• Manipulate refers to managing or using skilfully a given tool or material
• Mark is a visible indication made on a surface of a fabric or pattern paper
• Seam is a line of stitching given to join two or more pieces or sections of a
garment
• Seam finishes refer to the manner of securing and making the edges of a plain
seam by sewing over the raw edges or enclosing them
• Topstitch refers to stitching on top an even distance from a seam edge or fold
• Trimming is a decoration added to a garment such as lace, bias tape, buttons,
and ribbons, among others to make the garment attractive

Styles of Athletic Shorts

Baggies

These shorts had become popular as a football

sportswear before the World War II. Baggies were
used as the term for athletic shorts during this period
and are knee-length and loose-fitting shorts that
became the standard outfit tor this sport activity from
1970 to 1990.

Bermuda Shorts
These are shorts with pockets and loops for belt that
extend to the knee and are commonly worn with long
socks

Boxer shorts

These are used as male underwear.

5
www.shsph.blogspot.com

Bun hugger

Volleyball players use these tight-fitting

shorts to allow enough movement.
These are made of spandex and/or
nylon.

Cycling shorts
These are skin-tight shorts that are worn by
cyclists and have been used as casual street
wear. Women also wear these under skirts
and dresses.

Dolphin shorts
This is an athletic style of shorts with a
dolphin tail design on the side seam in
each leg's lower hem.

Gym shorts
Gym shorts are worn in gymnastic class or for
participation in sports and worn by male or female
athletes. Length varies from above the knee or below
the knee. Fabrics such as cotton spandex, polyester,
or other synthetic fibers are used in making gym
shorts. These shorts have a cord sewn and tied at
the front waist.

6
www.shsph.blogspot.com
Running Shorts
Running shorts are commonly used for sports activities and are worn for maximum
freedom of movement, and which reach up to the upper thigh. Nylon is the most
common material used in making running shorts.

Trimmings for Athletic Shorts

Trimmings are added to athletic shorts to improve their appearance. These include
topstitching, using white threads for seam, or using colorless or mono filament thread
for hems and braiding.
Types of Trimmings
1. Embroidery 5. 3D foam 9. Faggoting
2. Ricrac 6. Lace heat transfer 10. Screen printing
3. Applique 7. Laser etching 11. Sequins
4. Scalloped edging 8. Bias trimmings 12. Decorative fasteners
.
Factors to Consider in Planning for Athletic Shorts Production

Almost all people like to wear athletic shorts for any sports-related activity. They
usually display their own style by wearing well-made athletic shorts for various age
groups. Tailors or designers make stylish designs to suit a person and make their
sportswear saleable. One should bear in mind that a person should choose
appropriate athletic shorts that will best fit him or her.

Type of Sport Activity

The type of clothes is designed specifically for the kind of sports being played. A
tennis outfit usually consists of a white shorts with peplum or very short skirt and white
T-shirt. For volleyball games, a pair of shorts and a matching shirt are normally worn.
A softball outfit consists of a knitted pair of pants and long-sleeved shirt jacket.
Swimsuits can be a one-piece or two-piece attire and are usually bought ready-made.

7
www.shsph.blogspot.com
Material
Choose fabrics like cotton, mesh or nylon, synthetic, and polyester because these
are suitable fabrics for athletic shorts.

Design

One has the option to select a solid color or something with unique design. Others
choose design with pleasing effect on oneself.

Fabric Selection
The fabric should be strong and durable. In sewing athletic shorts, ensure that the
fabrics are available in your locality. Sometimes, fabrics can be recycled in sewing
your running shorts.

The fabric suitable for athletic shorts are as follows:

• Cotton – A type of fabric that is strong even when

wet, and absorbent; used for sports and work
clothes;
examples: corduroy, denim. popun, and seersucker

• Synthetic – A type of fabric that is smooth and

slippery-treated (texturized or spun); contributes to
the tendency of many woven synthetics to unravel;
highly resilient and wrinkle resistant

The body measurements needed for making athletic shorts are the following:

• Hips-taken around the fullest part of the hips from

the waistline

• Crotch or rise - taken from the waist to the lowest

part of the hips

• Waist-measured around the smallest part of the

waist just above the hipbone

While measurements are being taken, be sure to wear well-fitted foundation garments.
Measurements should not be taken on loose-fitted garments. A lot of practice is
needed in order to take accurate body measurements and a variation of 0.5 cm may
be overlooked.

Lesson 1.3 Creating a Project Plan

The following are components of a Project Plan:

1. Project Plan No. – reflects the number of projects

2. Date Started – date when the construction of the project will start.
3. Date Finished – the exact date when the project will be completed
4. Name of the Project – a specific description of the job/ project.

15
www.shsph.blogspot.com
5. Objectives - states the purpose why a project should be done. This is usually
stated in three learning domains: the cognitive, psychomotor and affective.
6. Tools and Equipment – list of tools and equipment in the accomplishment of the
job
7. Materials and Supplies Needed – the itemized list of tools and supplies needed
to produce a project.
a. Quantity suggests the amount needed.
b. Unit is the unit of measure of the quantity.
c. Description refers to the features and characteristics of the
materials and supply needed.
d. Unit Cost is the selling price per quantity and unit of the materials
e. Total Cost is the total amount needed per quantity of supply and
material needed.
f. Total is the over-all total cost of all the supplies and materials to
be used.
8. Design Specifications – the photographic representation of the project in two to
five views: front, back, right, left and top views.
9. Procedure – the chronological steps or operations involved to accomplish the
project. This is divided into two stages:
a. Preparation stage – depicts the preparation to be done before the
actual execution or performance of the operations.
b. Performance stage – the actual procedures involve in the actual
making of the project where all tools, supplies, materials and
equipment intended to make the project ready.
10. Evaluation – the process of assessing the finished project with its given
criteria prepared during planning and evaluating.
