GS39 SOC SCI 204: INTRODUCTION TO PEACE EDUCATION
THE PEACE THAT TRANSCENDS UNDERSTANDING
A RELFECTION PAPER
Peace is a concept of harmony in the absence of animosity and violence. It also involves
societal friendship. It is commonly mean as the lack of conflict or war and freedom from fear of
violence between individuals or groups in the community. Community building, personal growth
and the survival of the planet can be best achieve when there is peace. In the world with so
many beliefs, customs, practices, traditions and cultures being at peace with our co-existence is
essential to ensure productive, meaningful and sustainable earth. To achieve peace is not just a
walk in the park or a solitary endeavour. It takes a lot of discipline which usually starts from
within. Whatever is inside can radiate to the outward wherein the harmonious relationship in
the community will be evident. Peace embraces diversity and differences among people. It makes
the understanding stretches to the highest possible extent. When peace is promoted inside the
family members, there would be a blend of progress and amicable community.
Nevertheless, life and strife seem to go hand in hand. Our life is always a two-sided coin.
Same as true with achieving peace; it seems so difficult despite the many efforts exerted. There
are few challenges to be considered on this matter. Fear, ignorance, hatred and greed are few of
the many reasons as to reaching the state of total peace strenuous. First, the fear from poverty,
disease, environmental breakdown and terrorism. Next, the ignorance of the law and programs
which promote peace education specially those who are from far-flung areas. Moreover, hatred
built on the basis of race, gender, color, religion, economy and politics. Lastly, it is the greed of
power, money, fame and position. These obstacles contributed to the difficulty of having peace.
As a member of a community, I believe there is something I can contribute to address
these issues, however small. I can practice to strive for human understanding and harmonious
relationships daily by using constructive ways to manage differences and resolve conflict without
being angry. To pay attention to how I communicate and the language I used as I deal with
diverse people. Another step that I can do is to find means which nourish my aspiration,
enthusiasm and dedication for peace. I should be willing to search and access information about
successful peace initiatives and support it. Find role models to influence my mind and heart who
are inclined with the same motives as mine. Finally, I should not feel superior over the other
group. I should strive to develop the sense of certainty, safety and security.
I further believe that the highest attainment of peace comes from a supreme power. If we
look around us; chaos, injustice, conflict, fear, hatred and greed are prevalent. All the efforts
didn’t work exactly as we want it to be. But the peace which transcends all understanding is
knowing no matter the difficulties and challenges we faced as an individual member of a
community, we can be assured that we come out victorious because of the sovereignty of God
and not our circumstances. Let the peace of God Almighty guard your heart and mind at all
times!
