Learning Journal MATH 1201 - College Algebra, University of The People Noural Huda Alrahwan Professor DR - Varun Kumar August 9, 2023

1) The document is a learning journal entry on additional trigonometric concepts. It includes 3 problems evaluating trigonometric expressions and finding results in polar form. 2) The first problem takes the cube root of 27cis(240) and cubes the result. Two equivalent representations are shown and the initial expression is equal to the final expression. 3) The second problem evaluates (5/√3)cis(10π/5) and finds the result is 3(-i). 4) The third problem expresses 21cis(135) in polar form by dividing by 3 and subtracting 75° from 135°, finding the result is 7cis(60).

1. Evaluate the cube root of  . Then raise them to the cube. Show the

steps of your reasoning.

Answer:

To solve this, we'll use the DeMoivre Theorem:

First, find the cube root by applying De Moivre's Theorem:

√ 27 cis ( 240 )= √27 cis ( 240

3 )

3
=3 cis ( 80 )=3 ( cos 80 + isin 80 )
∘ 3 ∘ ∘ ∘

Another representation is:

√ 27 cis ( 240 )=¿

3 ∘

3 e i 80 =3 ( cos 80∘ +i sin ( 80∘ ) )=3 cos( 4π 4π

)

+isin
9 9

Now, use De Moivre's Theorem to calculate the cube of the cube root:

√ 27 cis ( 240 )=
3 ∘

3
27 cis ( 43π )= √27 cis ( 13 . 43π + 43kπ ) , k=1,2 ,
3

which is: 3 cis ( 49π + 23π )=3 cis ( 109π )

And: 3 cis ( 49π + 23π )=3 cis ( 169π )

Note that this is another way to express the three cubic roots:
3 ( cos 80 ∘+i sin 80∘ ) ,3 ( cos 200∘+i sin 200∘ )∧3 ( cos 320 ∘+i sin 320∘ )

The initial cubic root of the cube added yields the following:

The three cube roots of the given number are evenly scattered over a circle with radius 3 and

centre (0,0).

2. Evaluate  .

Answer:

[ ( )]

using DeMoivre

[ ]
10 10
1 √3 5 √3 i
5 ∘ ∘ 2 ∘
¿ 3 (cos 10 ×30 +i sin10 × 30 )=3 (cos 300 +isin 300 )=¿ 9( −i ).

√3 ( + ) =¿
2 2 2 2

3. Find     in polar form:

Answer:

First, divide 21 by 3, and then subtract 75° from 135°.

z1 21 cis ( 135∘)
=7 cis ( 135 −75 )=¿
∘ ∘
=
z2 3 cis ( 75 )

The last result:

7 cis(60∘)=7 ( +i √ ).
