A. LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW
1) Introduction
The study of human figures as to physical properties is an important aspect in planning. All types of buildings
intended for human use are planned according to human scale. Even furniture, cabinets, cars, etc. were also
patterned after human dimensions. How can we understand and rise to the environmental challenges of global
change? One clear answer is to understand the science of global change, not solely in terms of the processes
that control changes in climate and the composition of the atmosphere, but in how ecosystems and human
society interact with these changes. Human Dimensions and Philosophical Differences Much has been written
and done on analyzing the human dimension of conflict, including sociocultural analysis, human terrain
analysis, human geography, getting left of the bang, etc. Analysts are debating many important issues using
different terminology, different brands, and different flavors of the same basic concepts. We need to cut
through these minor differences and get down to the specifics of what matters and what is needed to ensure
security in the present and evolving international environment. Humans matter. During conflict, after conflict,
and before conflict, the behaviors, decisions, and thoughts of humans matter to our national security. To move
beyond the debates about tastes and brands, we must define our terms and understand the value of applying
well-formed, rigorous analytics to the problem, and more importantly, define the types of analytics that are
needed.
Furniture clearances:
Traffic tolerance in the living room is determined from the number of persons using the room and the narrow
lane between furniture group units. An adequate traffic lane between the main entrance and the major seating
group is 100 centimeters although 130 centimeters is preferred. To give adequate space for convenient use of
furnitures in the living area, the following minimum clearances are presented:
1. 150cm between facing seating
2. 50cm where circulation occur between furnitures
3. 75cm for use of deck
4. 90cm for main traffic
5. 150cm in between television set and seating
MINIMUM SPACE CLEARANCES
a. 45cm minimum clearances for single passage not a traffic lane between low objects such as sofa and coffee
tables.
b. 75cm minimum clearances for single passage not a traffic lane between tall objects hip height or over.
c. 100cm minimum clearances for general traffic lane. As room increases in sizes, the minimum distance also
increases to maintain the space scale of the room. This is what we call proper proportioning.
d. 90cm minimum tolerance for confined seating areas. For instance, between desk and a wall which permits
one person to pass at the back of an occupied chair. The minimum distances constitute no major traffic lane.
Dining room is the space or room where the family seat together, pray before meals, talk about family affairs
and other matters. Dining area should accommodate furnitures of either portable or built-in for eating, sitting,
serving and possible storage.
Planning considerations:
a. Determine the number of persons to be seated.
b. Compute the required space occupied by the table.
c. Compute the space for the chairs
d. The space required behind the chairs.
e. The seating arrangement
f. The size and type of furnitures
g. Space for the storage of Philippine glassware, silverware and linen.

Furniture clearances
To provide ample space for convenient use of the dining area, the following minimum clearances from the edge
of the dining table is recommended.
1. 80cm - for chair plus access thereto
2. 95cm - for chair plus access and passage
3. 105cm - for serving from behind chair
4. 120cm - from table to base cabinets (in-dining-kitchen)
Q&A
1. Any minimum floor to height ceiling?
2. Sizes and dimensions of appliances have been smaller in volume these days the same thru with cars it is
compact. Do we still follow clearances and space requirements?
