This Self Learning Kit (SLK) is an exploratory course which leads you to
Computer Systems Servicing NC II in order for you to know and gain more
knowledge about the course in improving your skills that will help you in the near
future.
In this Self Learning Kit, it covers the Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELC) that a Grade 10 Technology and Livelihood Education
(TLE) ICT - CSS students like you ought to possess, namely:

CORE COMPETENCIES:
1. Installing and Configuring Computer Systems
2. Setting Up Computer Networks
3. Setting Up Computer Servers
4. Maintaining and Repairing Computer Systems and Networks

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:


1. describe the computer hardware requirements
for installation of operating system.
2. cite the steps in installing the operating system.
3. appreciate the importance of installing the
operating system.
4. explain the critical aspects on the steps in
installing the operating system.

Let us check if you can still remember your lesson in
Week 1, that is, Prepare Installer. Rearrange the
jumbled letters of the words to reveal the correct
word, and match to the descriptions on the right
pane. Write your answer on the binder filler. Perform
this activity without reading the short discussion.

DPRKAIST 1. To view active disk on the computer.

After creating your bootable USB flash drive, you are now
ready to format and install your operating system, that is,
Windows 7. Read carefully the following information and
analyze the critical aspects.

There are system requirements that you need to consider before installation
of the operating system. So before the installation, be sure to check with the
manufacturer’s manual of your computer. If manual is not present, locate the name
of the motherboard and search the specs in the internet, the specifications of the
memory module or RAM, the monitor, and the capacity of the hard disk drive.

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

• 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
• 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
• 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
• DirectX 9 graphics device

When your computer meets all the system requirements, you are now ready to
follow the steps in installing Windows 7 Operating System.

Note: Format and install Windows 7 on the following conditions: 1) if your


system crashed, 2) your system lags due to attack by malwares, 3) if you
have extra computer at home for practice, 4) do this during the face-to-face
classes.

STEPS IN INSTALLING WINDOWS 7 OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)


1. Prepare all the equipment like set of desktop computer and USB flash drive
installer (Windows 7).
2. Plug the flash drive into the USB port before powering on the computer.
3. Power on the computer and press Del/F2 on the keyboard to go to the BIOS
setting.
4. Select the Boot Menu by clicking/double clicking the mouse or you can use
arrow keys on the keyboard if applicable.
5. Open Hard Drive BBS (BIOS Boot Setting) Priorities and set the USB flash
drive as Boot Option #1. (Critical Aspect)
6. Press F10 on the keyboard and save the new setting. Click YES to save.
7. When “Press any key to boot from USB…” message appears, do it
immediately. Otherwise, you will load the previous OS on the hard drive.
(Critical Aspect)
Windows 7 will load the files.
8. Click NEXT on the first GUI (Graphical User Interface).
9. Click “Install Now” button.
10. Select “Windows 7 Professional x86”. Click Next button.
11. Check “I agree to install windows activated” licensed term. Click NEXT.
12. Choose CUSTOM (Advanced) type of installation.
13. Delete the partitions by selecting the name of the disk partition then click
“Drive Options (Advanced)”. Click “Delete”. Click “OK”. Repeat this step
until you have deleted all the partitions and the name of the disk is Disk 0
Unallocated Space.
14. A. Create two primary partitions. Select the Unallocated Space, Click New,
enter the computed 60% capacity of the Hard Disk Drive, click Apply, click
Ok. (Critical Aspect)
B. Click the other unallocated space, click New, click Apply. Click Ok.

15. Choose the first primary partition. Click NEXT button. It will start installing
the Windows. Please wait until it is installed completely. (Critical Aspect)
16. When the computer restarts, Go to the BIOS setting again (Steps 3 and 4)
and change the Boot Option #1 to the name of the Hard Disk Drive. Save
(F10). (Critical Aspect)
Windows will continue processing the installation.
17. When a GUI appears for a Username, type your name. Click NEXT.
18. Leave the password blank. Click NEXT.
19. Select “Ask Me Later” for Windows Update Automatically selections.
20. Set the time zone to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) to +8 Taipei and
the date and time during your practicum. Click NEXT.

Remove the USB Bootable flash drive after


Windows 7 is completely installed.

Keep in mind that in installing the Operating System, you


need to check the system requirements of the computer.
Otherwise, less specifications might cause a bigger problem.
It is better to install a licensed Operating System, that is, you
buy your own license key from Microsoft Company. Licensed
Windows 7 is legit.
If you use a pirated Windows 7 operating system, your
computer will be detected by the company and it will be prone
to malwares.

Arrange the following shortened steps in installing the


Windows 7. Write A for the first step, B for the second step,
C for the third step and so on. Write your answer in your
binder filler.

1. Select Boot Option #1 as USB flash drive.


2. Prepare all the equipment like set of desktop computer and USB flash drive
installer (Windows 7).
3. Select Boot Option #1 as Hard Disk drive.
4. Create two primary partitions.
5. Delete all partitions.
6. Install the OS in the first primary partitions.
7. Type a username.
8. Leave the password blank.
9. Click Install Now.
10. Set the date, time, and time zone.
