Imtiaz Dharker - Introduction

1. What does Dharker say about her background?

Throughout the video Dharker mentions that she was born in Pakistan but her alongside
with her family moved to Glasgow Scotland when she was six months old. She spent most
of her childhood in Glasgow, which is why she considered herself as a Glasgow eigen.
However, she had three cultures in her house. Later, she married an Indian person from
Mumbai and thus moved there. In Mumbai, she felt very comfortable, and she believed that
it opened new experiences for her and thus develop her writing skills.

2. What’s her claim on identity?

Dharker believes that all of us carry multiple identies with ourselves and they are all equally
valid. She believes that the nationality of a person does not have to determine their entire
identity. She also thinks that people can develop by incorporating all cultural influences from
all over the world.

3. What does she advise new writers?


She advises to new writers to find their own voice, by reading different writers and thus
discover what they like and does not. She also mentions to writers to find something that
makes their work unique and thus make the work stand out when compared to other
people’s work.

4. What inspires Dharker?


Dharker says that she is inspired by everyday life, what she observes around her and listens
about others people conversations.

5. Comment on the illustrations she makes (style, mood, subjects, etc.).


Dharker illustrations usually tend to have a dark atmosphere and thus mood. She only uses
black and white to draw them, with thin lines that give the drawing a feeling of loneliness and
sadness. The human figure in the cover, conveys a shocking feeling on the readers because
of the resemblance to the real-life women who look like the one in the cover of Dharkers
poem.
