Final Exam
June 14 (Tuesday)
75 minutes

This is closed book test. However, two A4 cheating sheets are allowed. Make sure to clearly show your
work and full justification to get the full credit for the problem. You have 90 minutes to finish the exam.

Problem 1) [20pt] Consider a real, odd, and periodic signal x(t) whose Fourier series represen-
tation may be expressed as
5  k
X 1
x(t) = sin(kπt).
2
k=0

Let x0 (t)
represent the signal obtained by performing impulse-train sampling on x(t) using a
sampling period of T = 0.2.

(a) Does aliasing occur when the impulse-train sampling is performed on x(t)?

(b) If x0 (t) is passed through an ideal lowpass filter(LPF) with cutoff frequency π/T and passband
gain T , determine the Fourier series representation of the LPF output signal y(t).

Problem 2) [20pt] The following figure shows a system that processes continuous-time signals
using a discrete filter h[n] that is linear and causal with difference equation
1
y[n] = y[n − 1] + x[n].
2
π
For input signals that are bandlimited such that Xc (jω) = 0 for |ω| > T, the system in the
figure is equivalent to a continuous-time LTI system.

(a) Determine the frequency response H(ejω ) and the impulse response h[n].

(b) Determine the frequency response Hc (jω) of the equivalent overall system with input xc (t)
and output yc (t).

Problem 3) [20pt] Let x(t) be the sampled signal described by

X
x(t) = e−nT δ(t − nT ),
n=0

where T > 0.

(a) Determine the Laplace transform of x(t) (You need to compute X(s) and ROC).

(b) Sketch the pole-zero plot for X(s).

(c) Is X(jw) periodic? Justify your answer by using geometric interpretation of the pole-zero
plot.

Problem 4)[20pt] A causal LTI system is described by the difference equation

y[n] = y[n − 1] + y[n − 2] + x[n − 1].

(a) Find the system function H(z).

(b) Plot the poles and zeros of H(z) and find the region of convergence.

(c) Find the impulse response h[n] of the system.

(d) Is this system stable? Justify your answer.

Problem 5)[20pt] When we do the linear interpolation (this operation is often called a first-
order hold), the impulse response h(t) has a triangular shape shown in the figure below. What
is the associated transfer function H(jω) (i.e., CTFT of h(t))?

Problem 6)[20pt] The output y(t) of a causal LTI system is related to the input x(t) by the
differential equation
dy(t)
+ 2y(t) = x(t).
dt
(a) Determine the frequency response of the system,

Y (jω)
H(jω) =
X(jω)

and sketch its Bode plot.

(b) Find the group delay of this system.

(c) If x(t) = e−t u(t), determine the output y(t), and Y (jω).
