PHILARTS 1B

I. Introduction

The Jose Joya Awards are a commitment to the proliferation of the Fine Arts and
play a significant role in increasing art and culture awareness among Cebuano
students. With the assistance of the late National Artist Jose T. Joya, the
organization was founded in 1996. The annual Joya Awards are a testament to the
legacy of the late National Artist Jose T. Joya, who was also the Dean of the UP
College of Fine Arts in Diliman.

The esteemed painting competition celebrates its 46th Anniversary this year. The
presentation of winners in this year's competition will be the centerpiece of the
display, which features the numerous works produced by the Fine Arts students. The
Jose Joya Awards serve as a platform for the students in the UP Cebu Fine Arts
Program to demonstrate their skills while also honoring the National Artist Jose T.
Joya's substantial contributions to the local and national art scenes.

Message: The message of the art piece base on its title is up to where our life and
our freedom last.
How the art piece affects me: The artwork is an eye-opener to us since it shows me
how fragile our life is. It made me realize to live in the present and enjoy as much as
I can before its too late. Life is too short to be full of stress and sadness, just like
those fish in the painting, they idn’t expect to end up in a fisherman’s net.

ourselves to be manipulated.
How the art piece affects me: The art piece made me realize not to be passive about
what the government is doing but instead to be involved as much as possible for the
betterment of our country.

Artist: CM Arquio
Title: I CAN’T BE ME
Media: Acrylic, oil on canvas, and acrylic sheets
Message: The art piece message is about a person not being allowed to be himself
because of societal norms.
How the art piece affects me: This artwork is not just about LGBTQ but it is about
people not being allowed to be themselves because that is what society dictates.
The artwork made me realize that we should not stop ourselves to become the
person we want to be as long as we are not doing anything wrong and we do not
step foot on other people’s rights.
III. Significance/Impact

The Jose Joya Awards provide a venue for the UP Cebu Fine Arts Program students
to showcase their talents. This event offers young artists a platform to utilize art as a
means of bringing attention to contemporary concerns and to continue the promotion
of art creation, whether it is done to inspire, convey a message, or express feelings.
It offers a platform for fostering the next generation of creatives, dreamers, and
leaders, and hopefully paves the way for many more. The Jose Joya exhibit allows
visitors to acknowledge art more than ever. Allowing UP students and also outsiders
to view the exhibit for free is such a wonderfu offer and we all should take advantage
of this opportunity. Learning through and about art enhances the academic
experience and helps us get ready for life after school. Arts education fosters
creativity and self-expression, and it can increase self-assurance and personal
identity.

IV. Recommendations/Suggestions

The entire exhibit was such a wonderful experience and it made me proud as a student of
the University of the Philippines. The exhibit was well organized and there are not a lot of
things to say about it since it was such a well-planned and well-implemented exhibit. The
only thing I can suggest is to add artworks that are interactional so that people will feel
engaged and part of the exhibit. Aside from that, it is a perfect event and if I were to rate it, it
will receive a perfect rating in all aspects.
