PROCEDURE GUIDANCE - PERFORMANCE BASED NAVIGATION (PBN) for

RNP APPROACH
A. DISPATCH
1. Pilot Valid Certificate
2. Aircraft Equipped and Certified
3. RAIM Prediction No Outage ± 15 Minutes ETA /No continuous loss of RAIM > 5 minutes within ± 1 Hours ETA
B. EQUIPMENTS
1. Navigation Database FMC Procedures Database and Chart are available and current
2. Navigation Specification Equipment requirements:
RNAV/RNP 1 or 2 2 IRS, 1 FMC and 1 CDU, 1 A/P and/or 1 F/D, VOR/DME or DME/DME or GPS
RNP 4 2 GPS or 1 FMC/IRS and 1 GPS, 1 A/P and/or F/D
RNAV 5 2 IRSs, 1 FMC, 1 CDU, 1 A/P and/or 1 F/D, VOR/DME or DME/DME or GPS
RNP 10 2 IRSs and 2 FMS or 1 FMS/IRS, 1 GPS, 1 A/P and/or 1 F/D, VOR/DME or DME/DME or GPS
RNP APCH 2 IRSs, 1 FMC, 1 CDU, 1 A/P and/or 1 F/D, 1 GPS
RNP AR APCH 2 IRSs, 2 FMCs, 2 CDUs, EGPWS, 2 PFD/ND (L/R), NPS, EGPWS, 2 Radio Altimeters,
1 A/P and 2 F/Ds capable of LNAV and VNAV(for RNP 0.15 or greater) or
2 A/P and 2 F/Ds capable of LNAV and VNAV(for RNP less than 0.15)
C. PROCEDURE SEQUENCES
1. Check Equipment Met the Equipment requirements
2. FMC Procedure Load correct PBN procedure from Database (SID/STAR/ROUTE/APPROACH)
3. Legs Check/Compare FMC Procedures and Chart:
SID/STAR/ROUTE/APPROACH  Correct waypoints identification and sequence
 Reasonableness of track angles and distances
 Altitude and/or Speed constraints
 Identify Fly-by or Fly-over waypoints

APPROACH  Cold weather altitude corrections (as applicable)

 Check/Set current local altimeter (remote area altimeter settings not allowed)
 No modification shall be made from FAF inbound
4. RNP value RNP PROGRESS page 4/4: Normally RNP values supplied by Navigation Database
SID/STAR/ROUTE  Check Correct RNP value or Set Manually
APROACH  Check Lateral RNP (Approach) value for the Selected Approach or manually entered
 Check Vertical RNP (Approach) value for the Selected Approach or manually entered
(for NPS Aircraft)
Note: For airplanes with NPS, verify that the vertical RNP is 125 on feet FMC CDU - RNP
PROGRESS page 4/4. While there are no vertical RNP values published on the
approach chart, the use of 125 feet will cause the NPS amber deviation
exceedance alert to occur at 75 feet or slightly less deviation, since vertical ANP
will be at least 50 feet at all times.
5. Minima APCH /AR APCH  LNAV/VNAV Set to DA, LNAV only set to MDA+50
 If current TEMP < VNAV Temp Limitation; can use LNAV/VNAV function but only to the
published LNAV MDA+50, or
 If Cold Weather Altitude Corrections are applied, set minima to LNAV MDA+50
6. Before entering airspace  Engaged LNAV and VNAV
 UNABLE REQD NAV PERF-RNP alert is not displayed
7. After entering Airspace Monitor RNP PROGRESS page 4 Verify RNP value and monitor ANP value for the approach.
Monitor NPS (as installed)
8. Procedure Reviewed In the approach briefing, include speed and altitude restrictions, missed approach, engine
failure, and unable RNP procedures.
D. Configuration
At IAF/IF Approach configuration
At FAF Landing configuration
E. Contingency
SID/STAR/ROUTE  UNABLE REQD NAV PERF (UNABLE RNP); Notify ATC, follow instructions and/or revert
to conventional procedure.
 SINGLE FMC OPERATION; If 2 FMC required, Notify ATC, follow instructions.
 GPS - L/R INVALID; If 2 GPS required; Notify ATC, follow instructions
 GPS light; If GPS required; Notify ATC, follow instructions
APPROACH Do the Go-Around and Missed Approach Procedure if the alerting message is shown unless
suitable VISUAL REFERENCE is established and maintained.
 UNABLE REQD NAV PERF (UNABLE RNP),
 FMC DISAGREE
 VERIFY POSITION
 Equipment failure (Caused unable to continue the approach)
 FTE exceeded RNP value
 If VNAV DISCONNECT during LNAV/VNAV; Revert minima to LNAV MDA
F. Callouts
Monitor RNP PROGRESS page, PM duty to promptly make callouts for deviation:
“X-TRACK L/R”  Maximum Lateral Deviation (XTK ERROR): NPS amber indication or 1 x RNP
 If deviation is approximately 50% of RNP value. PM callout “XTRACK L/R”.
(e.g. If RNP value 0.3 then 50% = 0.15, when XTK L 0.1, PM callout “XTRACK LEFT”)

“VERTICAL”  Maximum Vertical Deviation - FAF to DA: 75 feet

 If deviation is approximately 50% of VERTICAL RNP value PM callout “VERTICAL”
Note: For airplanes with NPS, verify that the vertical RNP is 125 on feet FMC CDU - RNP
PROGRESS page 4/4. While there are no vertical RNP values published on the
approach chart, the use of 125 feet will cause the NPS amber deviation
exceedance alert to occur at 75 feet or slightly less deviation, since vertical ANP
will be at least 50 feet at all times.
G. Go Around
Follow normal Go Around Lateral priority is:
procedures 1. LNAV
2. Radar Vector (if available)
3. Heading SEL, follow conventional MAP (if available)

Note: If a go-around/missed approach is needed, track the required course manually

using the trend vector and map until LNAV is selected, In case of CFIT – follow
CFIT/GPWS Response procedure
H. Aircraft Maintenance Log (AML)
Malfunction entries affecting  Type of PBN Operatios and route or airport
PBN Operations  A/C type, registration, GW, wind/temp
 Navigation Database cycle
 Details of actual defect
 Description of anomaly, flight path
 DFDR/QAR reading (if applicable)
