Answer Key

The document is a chemistry practice sheet about quantum theory and the atom. It contains questions about quantum numbers, electron orbitals, and quantum mechanics. The four quantum numbers are the principal quantum number n, angular momentum quantum number l, magnetic quantum number ml, and spin quantum number ms. The questions cover topics like naming orbitals based on quantum numbers, determining quantum numbers for specific orbitals, possible values of quantum numbers, and the maximum number of electrons in different types of orbitals.

Chapter 5, Section 2: Quantum Theory and the Atom (Quantum Numbers)

• Answer the following questions

1. State the four quantum numbers and the possible values they may have.

1) The principal quantum number, symbolized by n, indicates the main energy level
occupied by the electron.
Possible values: 1,2,3,4,5,6….
2) The angular momentum quantum number, symbolized by l, indicates the shape of the
orbital.
Possible values: 0,1,2,3…..
3) The magnetic quantum number, symbolized by ml, indicates the orientation of an
orbital around the nucleus.
Possible values (-l < ml < +l): -3,-2,-1,0,+1+2+3…
4) The spin quantum number, ms, has only two possible values— (+1/2, −1/2)—which
indicate the two fundamental spin states of an electron in an orbital.
