Simple Compound Complex Sentences

There are three types of sentences: simple, compound, and complex. A simple sentence contains one independent clause, a compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, and a complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause introduced by a subordinating conjunction. Simple Compound Complex Sentences

Types of Sentences

There are three types of sentences:


Simple Sentence *
- contains a subject and a verb
- expresses a complete thought

Example: She smiled.


Scott plays tennis in the morning.

(*also called an independent clause)

Compound Sentence
- contains two or more independent clauses of the same rank
- clauses joined by a co-ordinating conjunction*

Example: She smiled and she laughed.


Scott was playing tennis so Amber went to the
beach.

*co-ordinating conjunctions – FANBOYS


for and nor but or yet so

Complex Sentence
- contains an independent clause and a dependent clause
- dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction*

Example: She smiles when she is happy.


Scott wore his hat because he was playing in the
sun.

*subordinating conjunctions
after although as while when whether whereas unless
because before if in order to since so that

Types of Sentences
Simple v Compound Sentences
Write simple (s) or compound (c) for each sentence.
1. Mary was sick, but Peter was okay. ___
2. Jack plays soccer on Saturdays. ___
3. Her dad was an angry man. ___
4. He ran to the ocean, and played in the water. ___
5. Sally’s new dog was naughty. ___
6. Sam had a pink car, and Jan had a red car. ___
7. The music was so loud. ___
8. He was tired, so he went to bed. ___
9. Paul’s mother told him to be quiet. ___
10. The house was on fire. ___

Convert these simple sentences to compound sentences.


1. Peter loves soccer.

2. While the water ran, she quickly grabbed a towel. ___

4. Her brother like pizza, and she liked hamburgers. ___
5. John didn’t eat his dinner because he was upset. ___
6. Although traffic was bad, Amber was still on time. ___
7. Since it was the holiday, they could stay up late. ___
8. She cried after he gave her a ring. ___
9. Mel was good at soccer because she trained daily. ___
10. Her eyes were red, so she took some medicine. ___
11. Andy rang the police because he was in danger. ___
12. The television broke, so their dad bought a new one. ___
13. Mandy went to school, and John went to work. ___
14. After their argument they decided to leave the house. ___
15. Tim’s eyes were watering because of the onion. ___
Complex Sentences
Underline the main clause in each sentence.
1. Although he didn’t like ice cream, Peter took his children for ice
cream every Saturday.
2. Mandy didn’t want to eat the vegetables because she thought they
were disgusting.
3. He had to pay his father $300 a week until his debt was paid off.
4. As Friday came around, his mood improved.
5. Before the school day started, children made their way to the office
to sign in.
6. Her mind began to wander as Jane stared off into space.
7. Jack stayed home because he was scared.
8. Mary closed her eyes as darkness engulfed her.
9. After she ate dinner, Kim finished her homework.
10. Before the big game, Jackson trained every day.
11. Tim quietly began his treacherous journey as the sun began to set.
12. Amy chose to drop out of college because her parents didn’t have
enough money.
13. While she worked for the large company, Alexia felt like she didn’t
belong.
14. Jimmy’s hair grew longer because he used a special shampoo.
15. As the moon started to rise in the sky, Peter put on his cloak and
started his mission.

Complex Sentences
Underline the subordinate clause in each sentence.
1. When the clock struck 12, they knew they were doomed.
2. Amy had pizza for dinner every night because she loved pineapple
on pizza.
3. Before Jack started his new job, he got a haircut.
4. The moon came up as they set off on their camping trip.
5. Jim’s diamonds shone brightly in the light as he showed them off to
his friends.
6. Becca’s arm was sore because she ran into the door.
7. Although his leg was sore, he still ran the race.
8. She cried for hours because of her brother.
9. As the monsters chased him, he screamed as loud as he could.
10. Jenny played the piano while she ate dinner.
11. His heart beat quickly because he was in the race of his life.
12. After they had finished their homework, they were allowed to play
games.
13. You can’t go camping because you don’t have enough money.
14. Although she was a kind person, the way she spoke to others was
harsh.
15. John was upset because his teacher shouted at him.
