MEASUREMENT
ASSESSMENT
EVALUATION
•Test – an instrument designed to measure
any characteristics, quality, ability,
knowledge or skill.
•It also refers to the administration,
scoring, and interpretation of the
procedures designed to get information
about the extent of the performance of the
students.
MEASUREMENT

- a process of quantifying the degree to

which someone/something possess a given
trait.
- refers to the process of quantifying an
individual’s achievement, personality and
attitudes among others by means of
appropriate measuring instrument.
TYPES OF MEASUREMENT

WHAT IS AN
ASSESSMENT?
ASSESSMENT
- is the process of systematically gathering
information as part of an evaluation.
ASSESSMENT

•Assessment and evaluation require thoughtful

planning and implementation to support the
learning process and to inform teaching.
In education, the term assessment refers to the
wide variety of methods or tools that educators
use to evaluate, measure, and document the
academic readiness, learning progress, skill
acquisition, or educational needs of students.
- A process of gathering and organizing
quantitative or qualitative data into an
interpretable form to have a basis for judgment
or decision-making.
- it is a prerequisite to evaluation; it
provides the information which enables

PURPOSES

• Assessment for learning (formative assessment) involves the use of information about
student progress to support and improve student learning, inform instructional practices,
and:

• is teacher-driven for student, teacher, and parent use;

• occurs throughout the teaching and learning process, using a variety of tools; and
• engages teachers in providing differentiated instruction, feedback to students to enhance
their learning, and information to parents in support of learning.
PURPOSES

• Assessment as learning (formative assessment) actively involves student reflection on

learning, monitoring of his/her own progress, and:
- supports students in critically analyzing learning related to curricular outcomes;
- is student-driven with teacher guidance; and
- occurs throughout the learning process.
PURPOSES

• Assessment of learning (summative assessment) involves teachers’ use of evidence of student

learning to make judgements about student achievement and:
- provides opportunity to report evidence of achievement related to curricular outcomes;
- occurs at the end of a learning cycle using a variety of tools;
- provides the foundation for discussions on placement or promotion. Evaluation compares
assessment information against criteria based on curriculum outcomes for the purpose of
communicating to students, teachers, parents/caregivers, and others about student progress;
and to make informed decisions about the teaching and learning process.
(Saskatchewan Ministry of Education, 2010b, p. 33)
•The purpose of assessment is to determine
whether expectations match standards set
by school authorities.
•The primary purpose of assessment is to
improve students' learning and teachers'
teaching as both respond to the information it
provides.
•Assessment for learning is an ongoing
process that arises out of the interaction
between teaching and learning.
Assessment can do more than simply
diagnose and identify students’
learning needs;
1. Itcan be used to assist improvements
across the education system in a cycle
of continuous improvement.
2. Students and teachers can use the
information gained from assessment to
determine their next teaching and learning
steps.
• RETURN TO
3. Parents, families and friends can be kept
informed of next plans for teaching and
learning and the progress being made, so they
can play an active role in their children’s
learning.
4. School leaders can use the information
for school-wide planning, to support their
teachers and determine professional
development needs.
5. Communities and Stakeholders can use
assessment information to assist their
governance role and their decisions about
staffing and resourcing.
6. School Administrators can use
assessment information to inform their
advice for school improvement.
7. The Department of Education can use
assessment information to undertake policy review
and development at a national level, so that
government funding and policy intervention is
targeted appropriately to support improved student
outcomes.
MODES OF ASSESSMENT

•Traditional Assessment
•Performance-based Assessment
•Portfolio Assessment
EVALUATION
-is a broader term that refers to all of
the methods used to find out what
happens as a result of using a specific
intervention or practice.
•a process of systematic interpretation,
analysis, appraisal or judgement of the
worth of organized data as basis for
decision-making.

2. Assessment is not an end in itself.
3. Assessment is an ongoing, continuous, and a formative process.
4. Assessment is learner-centered.
5. Assessment is both process and product oriented.
6. Assessment must be comprehensive and holistic.
7. Assessment requires the use of appropriate measures.
8. Assessment should be as authentic as possible.
