• Category of application software used for
producing information

• Allow a user to create specific items


quickly and easily as opposed to creating
the same items by hand.

• Increases efficiency by facilitating


different tasks

Word processing software
• A word processor is software or a device
that allows users to create, edit, and print
documents.

• It enables you to write text, store it


electronically, display it on a screen,
modify it by entering commands and
characters from the keyboard, and print it.
Word processing software
• Used to produce documents such as
letters, reports, papers and memos

• Example: Microsoft Word; Pages

Spreadsheet software
• An electronic document in which data is
arranged in the rows and columns of a
grid and can be manipulated and used in
calculations

• Examples: Microsoft excel, Mac’s


numbers, google sheets, Libre

Presentation software
• Defined as a computer program designed
to allow the user to present information
in an engaging way such as with text,
pictures, sound and video.

• Examples: PowerPoint (Microsoft);


Keynote (Apple Mac); Impress
(Openoffice/libreoffice); Slides (Google)
Graphics Software
• Used to draw pictures, 3D images, and
animations

• Have the ability to import and export one


or more graphics file formats, including
those formats written for a particular
computer graphics program

• Example- Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW,


Microsoft Publisher, Pizap, Picasa, GIMP

Executable files
• It is a type of computer file that runs a
program when it is opened

• Contain the programs or give instructions


that tells a computer how to perform a
specific task

• It executes codes or a series of instructions


contained in the file

• Executable file cannot be read
because it consists of compiled
codes

• Windows system use “EXE files”

• Macintosh system use .APP

Data files
• Data file contains data, ie text for
documents, numbers for calculations,
specifications for a graph, the frames
of a video, notes of a musical passage
etc.
• Can be read

• Data files do not instruct the


computer to do anything

Filename extension
• Filenames are separated from file
extensions with a “dot”

• File extensions are automatically


created when a file is saved

• Data files have a variety of


extensions
