Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

•Use one's linguistic knowledge in identifying

grammatical and ungrammatical sentence
constructions;

•Explain the value of descriptive and

prescriptive grammar in language learning;

•Exhibit one's understanding of language and

the basic elements that make up the
grammar of a language.
OUR
KNOWLEDGE OF
LANGUAGE
INTRODUCTION
What is language?
Whatever else people do when they come together, they talk.
We live in a world of language. There is hardly a moment of our
waking lives that is free form words, and even in our dreams we
talk and are talked to. The possession of language is our very
essence of being human. According to the philosophy expressed
in the myths and religions of many peoples, language is the
source of human life and power. Some traditions would say that
we all become "human" because we all know at least one
language. What does it mean to "know" a language?
Linguistic Knowledge

1. Knowledge of the Sound System

2. Knowledge of Words
3. Arbitrary Relation of Form and Meaning
4. The Creativity of Linguistic Knowledge
5. Knowledge of Sentences and Non-sentences
What is Grammar?

Grammar explains the forms and structure of

words (called morphology) and how they are
arranged in sentences (called syntax). In other
words, grammar provides the rules for
common use of both spoken and written
language so we can more easily understand
each other.
Prescriptive grammar and
Descriptive grammar
Prescriptive Grammar
It is the traditional approach of grammar that tells
people how to use the English language, what forms they
should utilize, and what functions they should serve.

Descriptive Grammar
Is a set of rules about language based on how it is
actually used. In a descriptive grammar there is no right
or wrong language.
LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS
AND INTERDISCIPLINARY
REACHES

Go Back to Agenda Page

Linguistic Analysis
-refers to the scientific analysis of a language sample.
- it involves atleast one of the five main branches of the
linguistics.
• Each level of analysis shows
a façade of the language
under study and its role in knowing the constituent
properties of that language linguistically speaking.
Phonology - refers to the study of the sounds of a
language.
Morphology- refers to the study of the internal
structure of the words of a language.
Syntax - is the study of sentence structure. Every
language has its own rules for combining words to create
sentences.
Semantics - is the study of meaning in language.
Pragmatics - is the study of the social use of language.

Linguistic analysis has been used to determine historical

relationships between languages and people from
different regions of the world.
Interdisciplinary Reaches
An Interdisciplinary involves drawing appropriately from
several disciplines (or seperate branches of learning or fields
of expertise). To redefine problems outside of normal
boundaries and reach solutions based on a new
understanding of complex situations. Interdisciplinary
expands what students learn by allowing them to tackle
problems that don't fit neatly into one subject. It also
changes gow students learn by asking them to synthesize
multiple perspectives, instead of taking what they're told by
a teacher at face value. Student may learn to work with
others, develop their problem-solving skills, expand their
knowledge, gain self-confidence and have a passion for
learning.
