Module 6

The document describes a student module on microscopy. It includes the learning objectives, which are to identify the parts of the microscope and their functions. The module contains lessons on the history of the microscope, labeling microscope parts and their functions, and modifying microscope designs. Students are asked to list microorganisms visible under the microscope and discuss the significance of microscopy. The overall goal is for students to understand microscopy and how it allows viewing very small objects.

Module No. 6 Time Frame: 2 weeks

Learning Targets: At the end of the lesson, the students can identify parts of the microscope and their functions by:
a. knowing the different parts of the microscope;
b. defining the function of each part of the microscope;
c. labeling the different parts of the microscope ; and
d. identifying the significance of having a microscope.

I- INTRODUCTION
A. Motivation

Hey! Congratulations for making it this far! We are now done with the first unit and now, it’s time to
have new lesson! Buckle up!

I have here different images. What you are going to do is to observe these images and
answer the following questions.
a. What have you observed from the given pictures?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
b. What picture did you usually encounter in our daily lives? Do you see hem using just your naked eyes?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
c. Why do you think we can’t see those examples on the pictures using our naked eyes?
__________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________

Great Job!

B. Transition/Linking Statements

As you can see, we are not just centered with the things that we can see with our naked eyes but also, the universe
gave us the minute things which we don’t even know existed if it’s not because of this excellent tool we have. This
time, before we are going to know this tool kindly please go to your group for our activity.

II- INTERACTION
A. Learning Activities

Lesson A.1: The Compound Microscope

Zacharias Janssen (1580-1638), a Dutch spectacle maker, was credited with

creating the very first microscope. It was believed that he had help from his
father, Hans Janssen. Father and son made the said device by putting several
lenses together, which greatly magnified the image of the object that was
being observed.

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was able to make a compound microscope that

had a higher magnification than early compound microscopes.

Magnification is the ability to make the images of small objects bigger up to

a certain number of times than their actual sizes, whereas resolution is the
ability to distinguish between parts of the object.

ACTIVITY
A.1

Directions: Label
the different parts
of the compound
microscope.
ACTIVITY
A.2

Directions: Give the corresponding function of the following parts of the microscope.

PARTS FUNCTIONS

1. Eyepiece

2. Draw tube

3. Coarse adjustment
knob

4. Fine Adjustment knob

5. Revolving nosepiece

6. Objectives

7. Stage

8. Diaphragm

9. Mirror

10. Arm

11. Inclination Joint

12. Base

B. ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES:

B.1. Binary Type.

Directions: Match the parts of microscope of column A to their appropriate functions of column
B. Write your answers on the space provided before the number.

Column A Column B

_____ 1. Eyepiece a. It supports the entire body of the microscope.

______ 2. Draw tube b. This is where the glass slide is mounted
______ 3. Coarse adjustment knob c. It allows you to hold the microscope to transfer
______ 4. Fine adjustment knob the microscope from one place to another.
______ 5. Revolving nosepiece d. It allows the viewer to look at the enlarged image of
______ 6. Objectives the specimen
______ 7. Stage e. It supports the eyepiece
______ 8. Diaphragm f. It reflects the light onto the specimen for viewing.
______ 9. Mirror g. It focuses the specimen under the high-power
______ 10. Arm objective
______ 11. Inclination Joint h. It allows the shifting of objectives from the low-power
______ 12. Base objectives to the high-power objectives.
i. It focuses the specimen under the low-power
objective
j. It further magnifies an image under the microscope.
k. It regulates the amount of light that will pass through
the stage
l. it allows you to tilt the microscope into different
angles.

B2. True or False.

Directions: Study the given statements below. Write TRUE if the functions corresponds to the part of the
microscope or FALSE if does not corresponds on the space provided before the number.

______________ 1. The stage is where the glass slide is mounted.

______________ 2. The mirror regulates the amount of light that passes through the stage.
______________ 3. The base allows you to tilt the microscope into different angles.
______________ 4. The drawtube supports the eyepiece
______________ 5. The revolving nosepiece allows the shifting of the objectives.
______________ 6. The mirror further magnifies the image under the microscope.
______________ 7. The base supports the entire body of the microscope
______________ 8. The arm allows you to hold the microscope to transfer the microscope from one place to
another.
______________ 9. The eyepiece allow the viewer to look at the enlarged image of the specimen.
______________ 10. The fine adjustment knob focuses the specimen under the low power objective.

III- INTEGRATION
A. Transfer of Learning

Lesson A.2.: Modify your own microscope

Directions: You wanted to view a microorganism with another kind of microscope but you don’t
like the capabilities of the microscope you are using right now. You are to modify your own microscope.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Draw your own design of a microscope
2. Give each parts its functions.
3. Draw it on a long bond paper
4. Your design will be rated according to the uniqueness, creativity and how well you explain
each parts’ function.

Lesson A.3: The microorganisms

Directions: List all possible microorganisms you can see using the microscope. Give at least 10
examples.

1. _____________________ 6. _______________________
2. _____________________ 7. _______________________
3. _____________________ 8. _______________________
4. _____________________ 9. _______________________
5. _____________________ 10. _______________________

Lesson A.4: The Microscope

What do you think is the significance of using microscope in our daily lives? List at least 5
significance of using the microscope.

1. ___________________________________________________________________
2. ___________________________________________________________________
3. ___________________________________________________________________
4. ___________________________________________________________________
5. ___________________________________________________________________
B. Reflection

Through microscopes, scientists were able to discover the existence of the microorganisms, study the
structure of cells, and see the smallest parts of plants, animals, and fungi. With that, how can you value
the importance of the minute things?
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

C. Closure/Synthesis

Microscope is indeed one of the tools which makes the science success. Without this device, we can never
know what lies in the corners of our house, the compositions of our blood, and the microorganism that might
inhabit even inside our bodies.
