1. General
This user manual describes details of testing P443 relays with the OMICRON Protection Test Template.
General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library items can be found in the
OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: ALSTOM
Model: P443
Firmware Version: 76

1.1 Supported Relays

The following relays can be tested with the Protection Test Template:
 P443
 P445
 P446

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, you must have a valid test license for the OMICRON Test Universe 3.00 software or
higher versions and the following test modules:

 Control Center
 Quick CMC
 Ramping
 Advanced Distance
 State Sequencer
 Overcurrent
 Pause Module

Any CMC test set can be used with this Protection Test Template.

3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring a P443 relay to a CMC test set. The advised connections are
shown in Figure 1. These connections are the default settings in the Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

4. Functional Range
Supported functions:

 21P/21G Distance protection (Mho and Quad)

 50/27 Switch On To Fault
 50/51/67 Phase overcurrent
 50N/51N/67N Earth/ground overcurrent

Not supported functions:

 Directional Earth Fault (DEF) unit protection

 Delta directional comparison
 85 Communication-aided schemes
 67/46 Negative Sequence overcurrent
 46BC Broken conductor
 49 Thermal overload
 68 Power Swing Blocking
 27/59(N) Voltage protection
 81 Frequency protection
 df/dt protection
 50BF CB Fail
 79 Autoreclose
 SEF/REF Protection

Not supported parameters:

1. Setting Values = Primary (09.2E)

2. Default Curves 1-4 in the Overcurrent and Earth Fault protection
3. CNV mode in the SOTF Tripping mode (34.83)
4. Load Blinder V< (31.D6) in the Distance protection
5. Mutual coupling compensation (settings 30.07; 30.08; 30.09 and 30.0A)

Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Test Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes all protection parameters of the relay.

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the ALSTOM MiCOM P443 XRIO Converter, which includes setting
parameters of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the MiCOM
S1 Agile software.

The Standard Filter for XRIO Files can be used for importing settings into the Relay Parameter
Section.

Further information about the Additional Information block can be found in the OMICRON PTL user
manual.

6. Specific Protection Tests

Description of specific protection tests not covered by the OMICRON PTT User Manual.

6.1 Distance Protection

Prefault times

For all distance protection tests the prefault time has to be set to a value greater than 1 s. Otherwise the
delta directional algorithm in the relay might not work and a fixed RCA (Relay Characteristic Angle) of 60 °
is used instead of the set Dir. Char Angle (31.E3). The test points could fail as this results in a different
directional line in the zone characteristic.

Test Model

The Mho characteristic modeled in the XRIO-converter is only valid for the Test Model selected as
"Constant test current" (ITest) or “Constant test voltage” (Vtest). If the Test Model is set to “Constant
source impedance” in the Advanced Distance module, the Mho characteristic used by the relay differs
from the drawn characteristic in the test module and the test points will fail. This happens due to the
dynamic mho expansion of the relay.

6.2 Switch On To Fault (SOTF)

The SOTF protection function can be activated by an external pulse (Manual Close signal) or a pole dead
logic. Furthermore the active SOTF zones can be configured quite flexible. Therefore two test modules
are available for each activation mode:

• SOTF Forward: for testing the SOTF function on the furthest active zone in forward direction
• SOTF Reverse: for testing the SOTF function on the furthest active zone in reverse direction

For the two cases above a regular trip and an accelerated SOTF trip are stimulated with the State
Sequencer module. For each module there are seven states:

1. CB opened 1: this state simulates a not energized line in order to activate the SOTF function.
2. Line Energized 1: simulates the line energized for a time bigger than the time the SOTF function
is active which means the SOTF will be deactivate again after this state.
3. Fault 1: In this state, a three phase fault is simulated. The test shot is placed on the furthest active
zone (forward or reverse). The Impedance View in the module can be used to check the test
point.
4. CB opened 2: the same as CB opened 1
5. Line Energized 2: simulates the line energized for a time smaller than the time the SOTF function
is active which means the SOTF is still in-service after this state.
6. Fault 2: the same as Fault 1.
7. Postfault: simulates opened circuit to reset all relay internal SOTF signals.

After all states have been executed the measured trip times are assessed automatically.

Note: The setting parameter "CB Status Input" (07.11) has also an influence on this test. If it is different
than "None" the binary outputs of the CMC should be routed to the relay as explained in the Hardware
Configuration section.

Note: If the selected zone for the SOTF function is used as a non-tripping zone (settings in the Scheme
Logic section) the test must be adapted. It could be necessary to manually change the time assessments
or even the test point for the faults.

An active zone that is not active according to the parameter SOTF Tripping (34.83) is not taken into
consideration for the SOTF test assessment. Therefore the test might fail.

SOTF Manual Close

The test modules for the Manual Close activation of the SOTF protection function are only active if the
SOTF Status (34.81) is set to “Enabled ExtPulse”. If the status is set to “En Pdead + Pulse” it can happen
that the SOTF function is already activated by the SOTF Delay (34.82) time and the Manual Close test
might fail.

6.3 Overcurrent Protection

Directional Phase Overcurrent Protection

For the different fault types the relay uses different polarizing voltages than the OC test module for the
directional phase OC elements. Therefore the directional element angles for the tests are adapted in the
OC test module.
This adaption is working for three phase faults and single phase faults but not for two phase faults.
Consequently testing of two phase faults with a directional phase OC element is NOT supported. Only
non-directional phase OC elements can be tested with two phase faults.

Inverse characteristics

More test points should be added to the predefined ones if an inverse overcurrent characteristic is used in
the relay to verify that the characteristic is working correctly.
