Introduction

In any mathematical system, definitions are important. Elements and objects

must be defined precisely. However, there are some terms or objects that are the
primitive building blocks of the system and hence cannot be defined independently of
other objects. In geometry, these are point, line, plane, and space. There are also
relationships like between that are not formally defined but are merely described or
illustrated. In Euclidean Geometry, the geometric terms point, line, and plane are all
undefined terms and are purely mental concepts or ideas. However, we can use
concrete objects around us to represent these ideas. Thus, these undefined terms can
only be described.

What I need to know

This module is divided into three lessons, namely:

Lesson 1: Represents point, line and plane using concrete and pictorial models
Lesson 2: Illustrates subsets of a line
Lesson 3: Classifies the different kinds of angles

After going through this module, you are expected to:

Represent point, line and plane using concrete/pictorial models.

Illustrate intersecting lines, parallel lines, concurrent lines, skew lines, line
segments and rays.
Practice accuracy in classifying the different kinds of angles.
Develop a sense of responsibility on the assigned task.

What I Know

To begin this module, let us first check your prior knowledge, skills and
understanding about point, line and plane, subsets of a line and the different kinds of
angles.

Directions: Read each item carefully and encircle the letter of the correct answer.

Line ▪ ▪ The line segment. A line segment is

segment A B part of a line that has two endpoints. We
define a line segment AB as a subset of
line AB consisting of the points A and B AB
and all the points between them. If the
line to which a line segment belongs is
given a scale so that it turns into the real
line, then the length of the segment can
be determined by getting the distance
between its endpoints.

The ray. A ray is also a part of a line but ray AB

Classifies the different kinds of
3 angles

What’s In

Billiards or pool is one game where Filipinos excel in international competitions.

Efren ‘’ Bata’’ Reyes, Django Bustamante, Alex Pagulayan and Ronnie Alcano, all
world champions in billiards, have made our country proud.
A billiards player often uses the table’s cushion to create a
desired angle. When a ball bounces off the cushion, its path
creates two angles with the edge of the cushion. These are
the incoming angle and outgoing angle.

Consider the illustration at right. Suppose the incoming angle

of a ball is 50o, what is its outgoing angle? Try it!

As you will eventually discover, the measure of outgoing

angle is equal to the measure of the incoming angle.

Definition

An angle is the union of two noncollinear rays with common endpoint. The two
rays are the sides of the angle. The common endpoint of the two rays is the vertex of
the angle.

Try this!
a. Name all the angles in the figure (a).
b. Name the angle in the figure (b) in four different ways. Identify its vertex and
sides.

angle, right angle, obtuse angle.

Let’s explore! DEFINING ACUTE, RIGHT AND

OBTUSE ANGLES
Acute Angle

These are acute angles These are NOT acute angles.

An acute angle is an angle with a measure greater than 0o but less than 90o.

Right Angle
These are NOT right angles.
These are right angles.

A right angle is an angle with a measure of 90o.

Obtuse Angle
These are NOT obtuse angles.
These are obtuse angles.

An obtuse angle is an angle with a measure greater than 90o but less than 180o.

SCHOOLS DIVISION OF TOLEDO CITY

Mini-Lesson

Classification of angles on the basis of their degree measures are given below:

Acute Angle:

An angle whose measure is more than 0° but less than 90° is called an acute angle.
Angles having magnitudes 30°, 40°, 60° are all acute angles. In the adjoining figure,
∠X0Y represents an acute angle.

∠X0Y < 90°

Right Angle:

An angle whose measure is equal to 90° is called a right angle. In the adjoining
figure ∠ABC represents a right angle.

∠ABC = 90°

Note that right angles are marked using a small square on the vertex. Thus,
is a right angle.

Obtuse Angle:

An angle whose measure is more than 90° but less than 180° is called an obtuse
angle. In the adjoining figure, ∠XYZ represents an obtuse angle.

∠XYZ > 90°
