Message to the Learner and Facilitator

For the Learner:

This Self Learning Kit (SLK) is designed to provide you knowledge based on actual
learning experiences. This aims to monitor your own learning at your own schedule wherein
you can study and decide the importance of the information found in this module. Here you
will gain knowledge on how to solve quadratic equations since you already successfully
illustrated quadratic equation in the previous module. In this module you will learn the four
ways in solving quadratic equations namely, (a) extracting square roots, (b) factoring, (c)
completing the square and (d) using the quadratic formula. But off course, we are going to do
this systematically. We shall begin with the first two methods. Please follow the instructions
carefully. Just take your time and enjoy as you answer the exercises and always remember
that math does not make simple things complicated but makes complicated things simple.

For the Facilitator:

Please make a follow up whether your son/daughter is following the instructions written
in this module and guide them on how to answer the exercises provided. Make sure your
son/daughter answer the exercises as honestly as possible. Feel free to contact me through
text or chat if you have some questions about this SLK.

Introduction

Start this lesson by assessing your knowledge of the different mathematics concepts
and principles previously studied and your skills in performing mathematical operations. These
knowledge and skills will help you solve quadratic equations by extracting square roots and
factoring method. As you go through this lesson, think of this important question: “How does
finding solutions of quadratic equations help in solving real-life problems and in making
decisions?” In order to find the answer of this question, perform each activity to the best of
your capability.

What can you say about these problems? Can you possibly solve for the required

solve these problems?

1. The method of solving quadratic equation x² = k is extracting square roots.

1. If k is greater than 0, then x² = k has two real solutions or roots: x = ±√k

2. If k is equal to 0, then x² = k has one real solution or root: x = 0
3. If k is less than 0, then x² = k has two no solutions or roots:

2. Here are the steps required for Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring:

Step 1: Write the equation in the correct form. To be in the correct form, you
must remove all parentheses from each side of the equation by
distributing, combine all like terms, and finally set the equation equal to
zero with the terms written in descending order.

Step 2: Use a factoring strategy to factor the problem.

Step 3: Use the Zero Product Property and set each factor containing a variable
equal to zero.

Step 4: Solve each factor that was set equal to zero by getting the x on
one side and the answer on the other side.
What Is It

Now, try to ponder on the following questions.

1. What are the steps in solving quadratic equations by extracting square roots?
What about by factoring?
2. What mathematical concepts do I need to know before I can successfully
solve quadratic equations by either extracting square roots or factoring?

Mini-Lesson

Examples:
• Find the solutions of the quadratic equation x² - 16 = 0 by extracting square roots.
Steps to do!
Step 1: Write the equation in the form of x² = k
Therefore, x² = 16
Step 2: Since k which is equal to sixteen and is greater than zero, therefore, the first
property will be applied (If k is greater than 0, then x² = k has two real solutions or roots:
x = ±√k). So, x = ±√16 which is equal to x = ±4
Therefore, the equation x² - 16 = 0 has two solutions: x = 4 and x = -4

• Find the solutions of the quadratic equation x² = 0 by extracting square roots.

Steps to do!
Step 1: Write the equation in the form of x² = k
Therefore, x² = 0
Step 2: Since k which is equal to zero, therefore, the second property will be applied
(If k is equal to 0, then x² = k has one real solution or root: x = 0). So, x = 0
Therefore, the equation x² = 0 has one solution: x = 0
• Find the solutions of the quadratic equation x² + 9 = 0 by extracting square roots.
Steps to do!

Step 1: Write the equation in the form of x² = k

Therefore, x² = -9
Step 2: Since k which is less than zero, therefore, the third property will be applied (If
k is less than 0, then x² = k has two no solutions or roots). So, x = 0
Therefore, the equation x² + 9 = 0 has no solution

• Find the solutions of the quadratic equation (x – 4) ² - 25 = 0 by extracting square

roots.
Steps to do!

Step 1: Write the equation in the form of x² = k

Therefore; (x – 4) ² = 25
Step 2: Since k which is equal to sixteen and is greater than zero, therefore, the first
property will be applied (If k is greater than 0, then x² = k has two real solutions or roots:
x = ±√k). So, (x – 4) = ±√25. But in here, you will have to add one more step which is;
Step 3: Solve the resulting linear equation
Therefore.
x–4=5 x – 4 = -5
x=9 x = -1

Therefore, the equation (x – 4) ² = 25 has two solutions or roots x= 9 and x = -1

Step 3: Use the Zero Product Property and set each factor containing a variable
equal to zero.

Step 4: Solve each factor that was set equal to zero by getting the x on one side and
the answer on the other side.

Example 1 – Solve: x2 + 16 = 10x

Step 1: Write the equation in the correct

form. In this case, we need to set the
equation equal to zero with the terms
written in descending order.

Step 2: Use a factoring strategy to factor

the problem.

Step 3: Use the Zero Product Property

and set each factor containing a variable
equal to zero.

equal to zero by getting the x on one
side and the answer on the other side.

Example 2 – Solve: 18x2 – 3x = 6

Step 1: Write the equation in the correct

form. In this case, we need to set the
equation equal to zero with the terms

Step 2: Use a factoring strategy to factor

the problem.

Step 3: Use the Zero Product Property
