-6-
2.1.2 Setup of Measurement Cables and Thermo Sensors

For installation support please call: +49 (0)4202 955 1390

In case of malfunctions please refer to chapter 5 Troubleshooting.

Thermo Sensors - The temperature sensors are

numbered and assigned to a particular channel. This
assignation is already stored in the IP-8 system (from
version 3 onwards).

Coaxial Cables - When installing the transducers, ensure

the correct placement according to the labels for receiver
and transmitter:

“T“ = Transmitter = RED cable

“R“ = Receiver = BLACK cable

The IP-8 connectors are marked on the outside with:

Transmitter 1 ... 8
Receiver 1 ... 8

In case you swap transmitter and receiver, the sensitivity

will be significantly lower and the measurement values will
be useless. However, it does not cause any damage to the measuring system.

Power Supply 12V - After installing all thermo sensors and measurement cables, connect the power
supply plug to the 12V socket of the IP-8 tester. When connecting the ultrasonic tester, please ensure the
correct voltage (see label).

USB Connection to Laptop/PC - Plug the IP-8 tester into a free USB port.

2.2 Installation of UltraTestLab Software

For installation support please call: +49 (0)4202 955 1390

Note - If your IP-8 system has been delivered with a laptop or a personal computer, please continue with
chapter 2 IP-8 Setup and Connection.

2.2.1 Initial Installation

Please close all other programs and insert the CD that is part of the scope of delivery in your CD-ROM
drive. If the setup does not automatically start loading, run setup.exe manually and follow the instructions
on the screen. All necessary parts of the application will be installed automatically. You may have to restart
your computer after installation. Please note that the installation of the software may take longer,
depending on the performance of your computer.

-7-
Note for administrators - All UltraTestLab users require read/write rights in the program directory
(standard: C:\Program Files\UltraTestLab) and in the subdirectory \data. Otherwise, the
configuration and log files will not be updated.

If UltraTestLab is already installed - It is not necessary to uninstall an existing older version of

UltraTestLab when installing a newer version. All files will be replaced automatically. The configuration file
C:\Programme\UltraTestLab\data\labview.ini (which contains all settings and calibration data) and
the log file will not be removed after installing or uninstalling UltraTestLab and will continue to be used by
the new version unless a different program directory is used. Please note: In case you have edited the
language file as described in 3.2.1 Language, please prepare a security backup. The language file will be
overwritten during a software update, because new features may require an extension of the texts stored
in the language file.

2.2.2 Installation of USB Driver

Connect the IP-8 tester to a free USB port of your laptop. If the computer is running Windows 7 or 8 and
is connected to the internet, the required driver will automatically be installed. The installation may take a
few minutes. In case the automatic driver installation is not possible, the driver has to be installed manually
from the included CD-ROM (or USB stick). Instructions for the manual installation are included in the CD:
CD-ROM:\UltraTest Installation USB Driver.pdf.

After the driver has been successfully installed, you will see “UltraTest: IP-8” under Control Panel 
Hardware and Sound  Devices and Printers.

2.2.3 UltraTestLab Setup / Configuration Tool

After starting UltraTestLab for the first time, the program starts to search for a connected device. This may
take a few minutes depending on your computer. If an IP-8 system is available, you will be asked to confirm
and the IP-8 will be activated.

-8-
When the IP-8 tester is connected and ready to use, you will see the green status message
in the bottom left corner of the window.

If you get the following status messages:

 check the USB connection of the device

 check the power supply of the device

Please follow the instructions and make your first settings.

-9-
1. Select the desired language

2. Insert your licence key and press „Check“. You can find your licence key on the last page of your
manual. Licence keys for additional extensions and features (e.g. measurement of
shrinkage/swelling) can also be entered/activated over the same field.

The UltraTestLab licence is valid for one PC or laptop. In addition, the software may be installed
on up to five additional computers for the purposes of evaluating measured data. Entering a licence
key will permanently unlock the number of channels purchased. The activated channels will be
displayed in the field "Current License".

- 10 -
The UltraTestLab Setup can be recalled at any time under: Configuration  Service  Setup

3. Insert the path for the measuring date as well as standard measuring distance

4. The connected devise will be displayed

- 11 -
5. Connect the corresponding measuring channels

6. Check the connected measuring channels

7. Finished

- 12 -
2.2.4 Test Function (Slider “Test”)

Before you start your first measurement, all measuring channels should be tested.
The test function allows a quick check of all channels and their respective
measuring distance by measuring the ultrasonic sound velocity in air.

Procedure:

 Click single for individual tests or interval for interval tests. Repeat this
for each channel you intend to test. Runtime, velocity, and temperature
will be displayed.
 The velocity is calculated by means of the measuring distance (standard
40 mm).
 In air, the system should measure a velocity of approx. 343,5  4 m/s
(at 20 °C air temperature).

If all connected measuring channels display correct ultrasonic sound velocities and
temperatures, the system is ready for measurement.

2.3 Preparation of Transducers and Measuring Forms

1. After connecting the transducers to the measuring devices, the distance can be checked using the
Test function. Following runtime values are valid for a sound velocity of 343,5 m/s in air at 20°C:
Measuring distance 30 mm: 87.3  1 µs
Measuring distance 40 mm: 116.5  1 µs (standard forms type 140-50)
Measuring distance 60 mm: 174,7  2 µs (only forms type 150-70)
Measuring distance 112 mm: 326,1  3 µs (only forms type 220-120)

2. In order to improve the demoldability, you can apply silicone oil or petroleum jelly
(petrolatum) to the front surface of the transducers and the thermo sensor as a release agent.

Important: Do not use mineral-oil-based form release agents. They can cause silicone to
swell.

3. When filling up the forms with the material, ensure

even filling without significant air pockets. After
filling, remove surplus material with a spatula.
Before you begin measuring, ensure that the

transmitter’s and receiver’s set collars fit tightly
against the white stop rings of the measuring
forms. Turning the transducers once by  30° may
improve the coupling to the material.

4. Even small vibrations can disturb the curing process

and cause measuring errors. After the
measurement has been started, the measuring
form, transducers, and cables should not be
touched (see chapter 5 Troubleshooting).

- 13 -
5. When removing the transducers from the cured
material, only pull and turn clock-wise. The transducer
pipes are very robust and can also be broken out by
slightly hitting the edge of a table.

6. Only if these methods do not work, remove them by

means of two multigrip pliers.

Caution: Turning the transducers counter-

clockwise can open and damage them!

7. The cured test specimen can be removed by gently

Turn clockwise only!
pressing the bottom of the form. The form can then be
cleaned under running water.

Any material sticking to the transducers can be removed with

stainless steel cleaners and water. Solvents or tenacious residue
can be removed with a spatula or sanding paper (240-grit).

Note: Only the front part of the transducers is waterproof. The BNC
connector is NOT waterproof! Penetrating water or cleaning agents
can destroy the transducers!

- 14 -
2.4 Configuration and Start of Measurement (Tab “set up measurement”)
This chapter enables a quick start of a measurement. The next chapters describe the operation of the
systems IP-8 and BP-700, respectively, more in detail. For a more detailed start description please refer to

Interface - Number of USB ports / COM ports of the

connection to the measuring system. For IP-8 systems with
USB 2.0 port: USB IP-8 Vx

Connected device - Displays or selects the different

measuring systems (IP-8 or BP-700). There are different
licence keys for the two systems, which will be delivered with the system. If a licence key has been entered

- 17 -
for both systems, this button will allow you to select between the two systems. The active measuring
system will be displayed in the top line.

Options:

1. “BP-7 V4.0“
2. “BP-7 V4.1“
3. “BP-7 V4.2“ and higher
4. “IP-8 V1.0“
5. “IP-8 V2.0“ (since 05/2009)
6. “IP-8 V3/V4“ (since 09/2012)
7. “BP-700 V1.0“ (since 12/2013)

These options may be limited due to the existing license.

3.2.3 Hardware - Configuration a New Temperature Sensor

Note: For new IP-8 systems the assignment of the temperature sensors has already been factory-set.

The temperature sensors have an internal unique digital address. If a new temperature sensor is connected
to the IP-8, prior to measurements this address has to be assigned to a dedicated channel (1 to 8).

Activate Assignment

Configuration  Hardware  Configuration Temperature Sensor

Click on to activate new sensor assignment.

Add a New Temperature Sensor

Attention: During this assignment only one sensor may be connected to the IP-8 system. The green
keys indicate which channels a temperature sensor is already assigned to.

A click on a free (grey) channel (K1 ... K8) stores the assignment of the connected temperature sensor to
this channel. The key turns green.

Exchange a Temperature Sensor

Prior to assignment of a new sensor the previous sensor assignment must be canceled > Remove
assignment: cancels the assignment of a sensor to a channel. The green key turns grey > Connect
ONLY the new temperature sensor (no other sensor may be connected) and assign to a free (grey)
channel (K1 … K8). The key turns green again.

Deactivate Assignment

Click on to deactivate assignment

- 18 -
3.2.4 Hardware - Calibration Thermometer
The temperature sensors have a resolution of 0.1°C and an average variation of approximately 0.1°-0.2°C.
In order to minimize this variation, the sensors can additionally be calibrated.

1. All connected sensors need to be exposed to the exact same temperature

(e.g. in a water bath 20°C)
2. Waiting period until all sensors have reached the same temperature is approx. 2-3 minutes
3. Start calibration to read out all sensors
4. In addition, this temperature can exactly be determined by a calibrated thermometer and in a
second step be corrected with the manual offset correction.

3.2.5 Software - Paths

Path for measured data - Select the standard directory for storing the measurement data. Default
C:\UltraTestLab. Any available network drive and directory can be selected.

Path for logfile - Select the directory for storing the logging data file “logile.xls”.
Default is the same path as for measuring files. Any available network drive and directory can be selected.

Path for Material Database - Select the directory for storing of file database “mat_db.utl”.
Default is the same path as for measuring files. Any available network drive and directory can be selected.

Evaluation - Tick box to remember a directory for each channel individually! Under evaluation, up to 8
saved measurement files can be displayed simultaneously. For each channel the system will separately
remember the last selected directory from which a file has been opened if this option is selected.

Save XLS Files - By default, all measuring files will be saved in an ASCII file ending in *.lvm. These files
can be opened with MS Excel. If the option write data additionally to .xls file is selected, the system
will create an additional MS Excel file into which all of the data of a measurement is exported.

Template Export Excel - file name of the Excel template, that is used for the export of measured data
(see 3.6.2 Data Export to MS-Excel). Default path is C:\Program files (x86) \UltraTestLab \data
\export1.xls. This template file and path can be changed at will.

Logo – Logo to be used for printouts The UltraTest logo is set as a default. The user can indicate the path
to an individual logo (in .bmp format), see 3.4.6 Print Graphic. The selected logo will be displayed right
from this path indication.

3.2.6 Software - Scale Standard Y-axis

Default settings of scales for the y-axis after program start. For a better comparability, velocity and
temperature should always be displayed with the same scale. Zoom function and rescaling (see 3.4.5
Graph Optimization) may vary the display of graphs significantly.

3.2.7 Software - Messages

The UltraTestLab software disposes of various warn or error messages. They can be deactivated by ticking
the belonging box. In order to make the boxes visible and edit the display of messages, it is necessary to
activate the advanced mode (see 3.2.15 Service  Service).

- 19 -
3.2.8 Measurement Parameters - Parameter Measurement
Note: Changing the default setting can affect the measuring data.

Default Values:

No. of values Number of individual measurements from which the average will
be calculated.
Possible settings: 1, 3 or 6
Default: 1

If the number of values is set to 3 or 6, an additional button latency appears.

This is the time between each two of these 3 or 6 pulses.

Possible settings: 80 ms, 120 ms, 180 ms, 250 ms

Default: 120 ms

Sensitivity: (from IP-8 V2 onwards)

Possible settings IP-8 V3.0: 0 - 10
Default: 5 (corresponds to medium setting on IP-8 V2.0)

Test voltage: possible settings:150 V, 300 V, 450 V, 600 V

Default: 600 V

A higher sensitivity (> 5) can be useful if no signal is received due to highly attenuating materials and/or
large measuring distances (> 40 mm). On the other hand, an environment with acoustic or electric
interferences can result in erroneous measurements due to premature tripping. In this case, runtimes will
be measured that are too short, which can result in outliers with very high velocities (see also Ignore
Runtime Val. below [µs] below). A low sensitivity reduces the risk of erroneous measurements.

If number of values, sensitivity or test voltage are modified from the default, the window on the right pops
up at the next start of UltraTestLab. Clicking the button set to default resets these settings back to
default.

- 20 -
Distance [mm] - Setting of the default measuring
distance in mm. This option sets the default measuring
distance for all 8 channels after starting the application or
after clicking on the set button. If you are using other than
standard moulds 140-50 with 40 mm, you should change
the default measuring distance. However, when configuring
a particular measurement, the measuring distance can be set individually.

Default: 40 mm

Ignore Runtime Val. below [µs] - Displays the runtime threshold in µs. With this function, erroneous
measurements due to premature tripping can be avoided. This type of erroneous measurements is usually
caused by acoustic or electric interferences. Runtimes measured below this threshold will not be shown
(see also Sensitivity above).

Default: 5 µs

Threshold Dyn E modulus [m/s] – Displays the threshold in m/s for the display of the dynamic E
modulus curve. Background: The dynamic E modulus only makes sense for solid compounds, it does not
exist in a fluid compound.

Default: 500 m/s

3.2.9 Measurement Parameters - Points

Number of values for acceleration -
Number of measuring values that will be
averaged for the calculation of the first
derivative. The greater the number of
measured values, the smoother the curve. The
value can be entered as a number or as a
percentage (of all measured values).

Default: 8 (as a number)

Start time – Measuring time (in minutes) before the search for a maximum of the acceleration is started.
Default: 10

Stop time – Measuring time (in minutes) after which the search for a maximum of the acceleration ends.

- 21 -
3.2.10 Measurement Parameters - Standard Measurements
At the right side of the window
measurement parameters up to 8 default
parameter sets can be individually defined
both for measuring period and interval (e.g.
for particular products or product groups) and
be selected when configuring the
measurement. Each default parameter set has
a long and a short description field.
The term entered in the abstract field will be
displayed in the set up measurement
window instead of the term mentioned in the
standard field (default standard, standard 1 to
8).

In addition, the default standard includes

the default parameters set in the
measurement set up.

Set will store the entered values.

Default will reset the parameters to default.

3.2.11 Calibration (IP-8 only)

Note: All IP-8 V3 systems are factory calibrated! Another calibration is recommended only one year after
commissioning. The data of the latest user and factory calibration are displayed at the bottom of the
window.

With the calibration function, tolerances for the whole

measuring system (IP-8, transducers, and measuring
cables) can be calculated and corrected.

The universal calibration bar (10/20 µs) has a runtime of

20 µs for all flat-faced transducers. This nominal runtime
will be compared to the measured actual runtime, and the
difference is being stored.

Procedure
After clicking on the button, a new
window opens on the right side. Apply a thin layer of contact
agent (e.g. oil) to the contact areas of the transducers and
press them tightly to both sides of the calibration bar.

- 22 -
The calibration will start 10 seconds after clicking on one of
the buttons C1 to C8. The first measured value will be
applied for the calibration and displayed in the right
window. Further below in that window, subsequently
measured values are displayed. Clicking Accept will apply
the measured value for the calibration. Repeat restarts the
measurement. Factory preset restores the factory-set
value for the selected channel. Clicking Stop aborts the
running measurement, a possibly measured value will not
be applied. The offset data thus determined will be assigned
to the channel. If possible, every transducer pair should
therefore always be used with the same measuring channel.

The calibration values should always be in the range of

±1.0 µs.

Note: At IP-8 systems version 3 equipped with firmware version 2.00 onwards, factory calibration has set
all channels to a value of 0.00 µs. In order to obtain the most accurate measuring results, the calibration
process should be repeated after replacing the transducers.

The calibration should be checked every 12 months!

3.2.12 Extensions
Chapter 4 System Extensions describes program components that require their individual licence keys:

 Mitutoyo Length Measurement (see 4.1 Shrinkage Measurement)

 External Thermometers (see 4.2 External Temperature Measurement)
 Temperature differences (see 4.3 Temperature Differences / Room Temperature)
 Weight Measurement (on request)

3.2.13 Diagnosis - Automatic Performance Check

This performance check evaluates the functionality of the measuring system. The results will be recorded.
Attention: The button diagnosis is only available if advanced mode is activated (see 3.2.15 Service
 Service).

Preparation

1. Exit all running measurements

2. Connect only ONE ultrasonic test device
3. Insert all available transducers into the empty measuring moulds and connect the measuring
cables to transmitter and receiver transducers
4. Connect the thermo sensors
5. Switch the device on

- 23 -
Start performance check

1. Available UltraTest systems will be listed

2. The window on the right pops up if more than one

device is connected.

3. Remove other devices, then click Repeat

4. Check connected hardware on functionality. During this process 6 measurements per channel will
take place in order to measure the noise level

5. Hardware, firmware, software and driver version will be recorded

6. The content of the labview.ini will be stored

The following image will be displayed after the test is completed:

After the performance check the results will be stored as a log file:

Default: C:\UltraTestLab\Diagnose\diag_ddmmyyyy_hhmm.xls

The file can be read by any kind of editor or by MS Excel. By clicking Send results to ultratest.de the
protocol file will be emailed in excel format to [email protected]. The button View results opens the
Excel file on the PC / laptop. By clicking EXIT the diagnosis will be quit.

Note: Do not stop the performance check after it started.

3.2.14 Diagnosis - Noise Level (IP-8 only)

Electrical, mechanical and acoustic disturbances can easily be identified by means of the integrated noise
level measurement. Common noise sources in laboratories are vibration tables, blowers and compressors
of air condition or climate chambers etc.

- 24 -
Procedure

1. Exit all active measurements. (At channels with active measurement the noise level measurement
will be interrupted at the next measuring step.)
2. Select a free measuring channel and connect transmitter and receiver cable.
3. Select the time period (60 seconds) and the integration time (1-2 seconds)
4. Click start
5. Disturbances can be turned on and off and the influence on the measurement can be uncovered

(Course of the noise level at different locations within a climate chamber caused by turning the compressor
on and off)

Noise level evaluation

 0-3: low-noise environment - no noticeable influence on the measuring values expected

 4-7: individual „peaks“ possible during the measuring process
 8-10: noisy measuring process possible

Note: The rate of the noise level does not depend on the sensitivity setting (1 … 10, see Fehler! V
erweisquelle konnte nicht gefunden werden. Measurement Parameters). However, a constant noise
level at a high sensitivity setting (e.g. 9) will have a stronger influence on the measuring values than a low
sensitivity setting.

If advanced mode and noise detection are active (see 3.2.15 Service), another button
will appear in the online and evaluation graph window (see 3.4 Online Graphs). After the
activation of noise an additional graph will be displayed indicating the noise level on a scale from 0 to 10.

The noise level will be measured as follows: After the actual measurement the receiver will be turned on
for approx. 4 seconds and the highest amplitude will be measured. This way all recurrent background
noises are measured. Particular incidents such as e.g. banging doors will only be measured if they occur
during this measuring interval.

- 25 -
3.2.15 Service - Service
This service mode is for firmware updates, remote support, troubleshooting and guest access.

Online Support - For online support please call us in

advance and then activate advanced mode and
subsequently press the then visible button

The TeamViewer window opens. For online support the

PC needs to be connected to the internet.

Please forward the Team Viewer ID number as well as the

password (German: Kennwort) for a particular session.

For further information, please call us!

Advanced Mode
Various service features require to activate the advanced
mode by ticking the appropriate box.

Noise Detection
Beside advanced mode, in the Service window, it is possible to activate noise detection. If both boxes
are ticked, there will be an additional button noise in the online and evaluation graphs (see 3.4 Online
Graphs) that enables measurement of the noise level in addition to the other measured values.

Automatic Performance Check

Moreover, the box advanced mode must be ticked if an automatic performance check shall be performed
(see 3.2.13 Automatic Performance Check).

Toolbox
The use of the toolbox functions requires activation of the advanced mode (see 3.4.8 Toolbox).

Printing Background
In the advanced mode it is possible to alter the online and evaluation graph
background color (e.g. for printing purposes) (see 3.4.6 Print Graphic). On
the right, background graph determines the background color of the online
or evaluation graph. Just click on the field and easily select any color.

Eliminate noise spikes

Noise spikes that result from accidental events e.g. slamming of a door, may let an otherwise useful curve
look worse than the actual measuring situation was. For this reason, in the advanced mode the curve
can be mended, see 3.4.3 Cursor.

Warn and Error Messages

In the advanced mode it is possible to edit the display of warn and error messages (see 3.2.7 Software
 Messages).

- 26 -
3.2.16 Service - Simulation
Simple simulation mode for a demonstration of
measurements with no measuring system connected. In
the simulation mode, one or various measurements will
proceed in time-lapse mode.

When clicking the off button, it will change its color and
its name (on). Moreover, at the lower right end of the
window, the word Simulation shows up.

To start the simulation, the window set up measurement must be opened. Here, the already
preconfigured measurements can be started. After clicking the green start button of a channel, the
following window pops up:

The simulation will be stored as described in 3.3 Configuration and Start of Measurements as a file
named default Cx_uvw.lvm, where x stands for the selected channel number and uvw is a consecutive
numbering.

Clicking the button default Cx starts the simulation in time-lapse mode.

The end of a measurement simulation is indicated by an acoustic signal.

3.3 Configuration and Start of Measurements

In the Set Up Measurements window measurements can be configured and started. Depending on the
measuring system and the number of channels unlocked via licence management, you can manage up to
8 measurements simultaneously:

IP-8: 1 – 8 channels
BP-700 Pro: 1 channel

When you reach the maximum number of allowed channels, the Start buttons of the remaining channels
will automatically be disabled.

- 27 -
3.3.1 Start of Measurements
1. Select a free channel (green start button). Do not press the start button yet.
2. Select the parameters for the measurement using a default (8 default settings possible) for certain
products/product groups or manually set the measuring period and measuring interval. As a
standard, at the IP-8 the lowest settable measuring interval is 10 seconds. In the service mode,
however, it is possible to reduce the interval down to 1 second. Due to the measuring time of the
thermo sensors, below an interval time of approx. 3 seconds, the number of available channels will
be reduced.

3. Enter the measurement file name. New directories may be created.

4. Enter a comment (sample description, text, and employees). In the lower part of
the window density and Poisson's ratio (µ) can be entered. Both values are a necessary requirement
to calculate and display the dynamic E modulus (Young’s modulus). The Material button allows
to select the data for a specific material if it had been configured in the material data base earlier.
Together with a specific material, all relevant settings for the measurement can be preset. The
Details button leads to the material data base (see 3.6.4 Material Data Base).
5. Click the start button to start the measurement.

If no valid file name has been entered yet, the alert window
shown on the right will appear.

The following 3 options are available:

1. Enter a file name after clicking on the folder symbol.

2. Use the default file name default Cx.lvm (x represents the channel number).
The file name of the measurement will be default Cx_uvw.lvm, where x stands for the channel
number and uvw is a consecutive numbering starting with 001.
3. Abort of measurement.

While the measurement is running, the measured values will be stored in the selected file after every 10
measurements. After the pre-set measuring period has expired, the measurement will automatically be
terminated and the results will be saved in the specified file.

3.3.2 Start of Measurements including Mixing Time

This feature allows you to measure the time from the point when you start mixing
(adding water). By clicking on start mixtime, the measurement will be started
with the set parameters. The elapsed time and the measured ultrasonic sound
velocity (in air) will be displayed. During this phase, the start button will flash,
and the measurement values will not yet be saved. Only after clicking on start
the measurement will start at the next measuring interval. As a result, in the
display the setting curve will be shifted to the right along the time axis depending
on the set mixtime. (In the example on the right, the first measurement would
take place after 2:00 minutes).

- 28 -
The mixing time can be added any time later, during or after
the measurement (see section 3.6.3 Parameter).

3.3.3 Additional Channels

The feature additional channels enables to imply
measured values provided by the system extensions.

1. Length C1 … C8: Length measurement values of connected shrinkage grooves

(see 4.1 Shrinkage Measurement)
2. Ext. Temp: Temperature values of external 8-channel thermo couple data logger
(see 4.2 External Temperature Measurement)
3. Diff. Temp: Difference between sample and room temperature
(see 4.3 Differential Temperature / Room Temperature)

A maximum of 2 additional channels can be activated for each measuring channel. The measuring values
from the additional channels will measured in the same interval as the ultrasonic measurements.

The graphs of the additional measurements can be can be

shown and hidden in the online and evaluation range.

Tip: By double clicking on the scaling values the scaling will

be The scaling can be adjusted.

Note: The measuring values from the additional channels

will be displayed in separate columns when exported to
MS-Excel.

3.3.4 Stopping a Running Measurement

By clicking the Stop button, a measurement can be aborted.

The window on the right pops up and following 3 options

are available:

 Continue measuring
 Abort the measurement and save the measured
values.
 Abort the measurement without saving the
measured values.

Tip: Each measurement saved will be recorded in a measuring protocol (see 3.6.4 Sub-Window Log).

- 29 -
3.4 Online Graphs
In the Online Graphs window, ongoing measurements are graphically displayed.

By default, 3 graphs can be displayed for each channel:

1. Velocity: in m/s or runtime in µs

2. Acceler.1: Acceleration (first derivative of the sound velocity) in m/s/min = (m/s²) * 60 or
curvature or dynamic e-modulus in GPa
3. Temp: Temperature in °C

Depending on the available extensions up to two of the following graphs can additionally be displayed for
each channel:

1. Noise: measured noise level in the measurement environment

(only available in the advanced mode, see 3.2.15 Service > Service)

2. Length: shrinkage measurement with connected shrinkage groove

(see 4.1 Shrinkage Measurment)
3. Temp.ext: temperature signal of an external thermo element
(see 4.2 External Temperature Measurement)
4. Weight: weight of product sample with connected scale

In general, the ultrasonic velocity correlates very well with the strength properties of a specimen. For solid
parts, a direct physical correlation exists between velocity and dynamic e-modulus.

The following formula is used to calculate the dynamic e-modulus:

Edyn = k * v² * ρ

k = (1 + μ) * (1 - 2μ) / (1 - μ)
µ= Poisson's ratio
v= velocity in [m/s]
ρ= density of product sample in [kg/dm³]

- 30 -
In order to display the dynamic e-modulus the value of density and Poisson's ratio need to be entered.
(see 3.6.3 Parameter).

3.4.1 Graphic Marks

Graphic marks allow for easier identification of characteristic material properties. These boundary lines can
be displayed both for Online Graphs and Evaluation. A limit can either be set for the velocity or the time
axis. If the graph of the velocity measurement exceeds this limit, a mark is created on the other axis. The
belonging numerical value is displayed near the curve.

Sets of graphic marks - Up to 20 sets of 4 graphic marks each can be defined and individually named.
Just click on the field Set 1 … 20, enter the Name of the set and the parameters in the Text field and
click on Save new values. Options: velocity [m/s] or time [min]

The figures belonging to the graphic marks can easily be moved to any other place by means of the
mouse.

- 31 -
3.4.2 Envelope
Envelopes let you define allowed deviations from reference measurements. Two additional curves above
and below the reference curve create a corridor that limits the allowed area. For this purpose, a percentage
velocity offset, an absolute velocity offset in m/s, and a time offset in minutes are provided in relation to
the reference curve. The reference curve can be selected via the additional channel reference (on the
right side).

Offset 1 - 2 permissible velocity offset

Enter permissible positive and negative deviation in %.

Offset 1 - 2 velocity offset in m/s

Enter permissible positive and negative offset in m/s.

Offset 1 - 2 time offset (shifting the reference curve on the time axis)
Enter permissible positive and negative time offset in minutes.

Envelope sets - up to 20 sets of offset values for different products can be defined.

3.4.3 Cursor
The cursor is activated by clicking on the respective button
at the bottom of the diagram. When the cursor is activated,
an additional button to select the channel shows up and the
exact values of the x- and y-position of the cursor of the selected channel will be displayed (e.g. 10 min,
1556.42 m/s).

- 32 -
Eliminate noise spikes (evaluation graphs only)

Noise spikes that result from accidental events e.g.

slamming of a door, may let an otherwise useful curve look
worse than the actual measuring situation was. For this
reason above the Y field of the cursor readout, in the
advanced mode (see 3.2.15 Service  Service) a red
button Del is displayed. After clicking this button the
window on the right pops up. Now the current measured
point selected by the cursor can be deleted. According to
your selection there will remain a gap in the curve or a new
point will be interpolated in order to close the gap.

The curve in the left window includes two noise spikes, that do not refer to the actual behavior of the
tested material. In the middle window the right spike has been selected by the cursor. By clicking interpol.
& resave the spike will be removed and a new dot will be interpolated that fits to the adjacent dots of the
curve as displayed in the right window. Clicking delete & resave would have deleted this dot only, a little
gap would have occurred in the curve. The curve will be automatically stored in the new condition.

The automatic suppression of spikes can be set – even during an active measurement - in the toolbox
under Spikes, see 3.4.8 Toolbox.

3.4.4 Zoom
After clicking on the Zoom button, an area can be selected by the mouse that will be displayed in enlarged
mode. A second click on the Zoom button deactivates the function and the display will return to normal.

- 33 -
3.4.5 Graph Optimization
Adjust Scale

The scale of x-axis and y-axis can easily be adjusted by double-clicking on the highest (or lowest) value
(e.g. “0 m/s” or “1200 m/s”). Subsequently you can enter your desired new value via keyboard and confirm
by pressing Enter on the keyboard. The y-axis default value can be set in the software menu, see 3.2.6
Software > Scale Standard Y-axis.

Show Legend

Clicking the Legend button once or twice activates the legend field and it will be displayed. This feature
displays the description or assignment of the graphs, e.g. for print editions. By left-clicking on the frame
and holding down the mouse button, you can move the legend to any place in the graphic.

The legend being displayed. You can set various graphic

parameters by right-clicking on any channel symbol:

 Type of diagram
 Color
 Line style and width
 Smoothing and interpolation
 Axis assignment

3.4.6 Print Graphic

opens the window on the right. The top line will be printed left-aligned (logo), centered (first
text field), and right-aligned (second text field) with the entered text.

The UltraTest logo may be replaced by your

own logo, see 3.2.5 Software > Paths. The
background of the online graph is black as a
default, however, the color of the background
can easily be changed for the printout, please
see 3.2.15 Service > Service. The new color
will be displayed at the online graph at first, but the online graph will return back to black after the first
printout. The evaluation graph background, however, will remain in the selected color.

3.4.7 Export Graphic

With a few clicks the current graphic can be copied to the clipboard and inserted (by means of Ctrl + V)
into any Windows application.

- 34 -
1. Right-click into the diagram.
2. Select first line of the pop-up
menu (export graphic)
3. Select the desired graphic
format (selecting enhanced
ctrl+ v
metafile .emf format usually
leads to a better resolution).
4. Export to the clipboard or file.
5. Copy into the desired
application.

3.4.8 Toolbox
The content of the toolbox varies in the main menus online graph and evaluation. Use of the toolbox
features requires activation of the advanced mode (see 3.2.15 Service > Service).

the curve subsequent to a measured value in
order to qualify it as a local high point. search
will start the search for such values. By
double-clicking on the respective line in
the results table, a cursor will mark the
corresponding point of the curve in the color
of this line. This cursor can freely be moved on
the curve by the mouse. Clicking the search
button again will reset each cursor to its initial location according to the results table. To remove a cursor,
double-click on the respective line. The line will change its color to grey. Clicking the search button again
will delete the cursor on the curve.

Points right side (evaluation

only) - Function for the display of
relevant tangents and their
intersection. Values for
acceleration enables setting the
number of measured values for the
calculation of a tangent.

The tangents will appear at the

curve selected in the toolbox. In the window Tangent, in
the boxes highlighted in white, time values can be entered.
The boxes highlighted in grey will be calculated. These are
the corresponding velocity values as well as the time value
of the tangents’ intersection.

The boundary points of the two tangents with the curve are marked with white cursors. These cursors can
easily be moved on the curve by clicking them with the mouse. The belonging tangents are displayed as
dotted white lines. At the intersection of the two tangents, a dotted orange line indicated the belonging
time value. The colors white and orange, resp., are default values that can easily be changed to any other
value in the toolbox window.

- 35 -
Filters upper left side (evaluation only) - Filter for
smoothing the speed graphs.

Filters lower left side - Acceleration: Filter for

smoothing the 1st derivative Number of measured
values to be included in the calculation can be set
by numbers or as a percentage (of all measured
values).

Filters right side (evaluation only) - Fitting D1:

The measured values are approximated by a polynomial function and optically smoothed. Polynomial
order allows setting the polynomial order for this interpolation (maximum value is 25). As mathematical
method, biquadrat, lowest quadrat or lowest asolute residuum can be selected.

Auto fitting: A defined range can be activated by setting a start time and stop time and subsequently
clicking the range button.

Spikes - Function for the automatic suppression of

spikes.

 Compression strength in GPa (value calculated from correlation
measurement)
 Currently elapsed measurement time
 File name

Click on and the table will be displayed transparently

and hidden measuring curves become visible again.

3.5 Online Tables

Displays the measured values for velocity, runtime, temperature, and first derivative of the 8 channels in
tables. Active channels are marked by green channel numbers. If options are activated (e.g. length
measurement) their respective measured values will be displayed as well.

Copy Data - The values of a table can be copied to the clipboard by right-clicking them.

- 37 -
3.6 Evaluation
The evaluation window allows for the evaluation of completed measurements. The structure corresponds
to the window online graphs, please refer to 3.4 Online Graphs. Up to 8 saved measurements
(file 1 … 8) can be displayed and edited. BP-7 only: Subordinate windows are available as follows: file,
log, import and read BP-7 (BP-7 only).

Using the buttons file 1 to file 8, you can load and display saved measurements via a browse prompt. For
every channel, the last opened file is pre-set so it can be re-opened by pressing Enter. Clicking the file x
button again will delete the present file.

The channels can be set to either display the velocity [m/s] or the runtime [µs]. The conversion takes place
using the measuring distance set before starting the measurement. Moreover, you have the option of
displaying either the temperature or the first derivative (acceleration).

3.6.1 Spike Elimination

By means of the activated cursor it is possible to delete single spikes on the measured curve. Please refer
to 3.4.3 Cursor. Automatic suppression of spikes – even during an active measurement – can be activated
by means of the toolbox, see Spikes at 3.4.8 Toolbox.

3.6.2 Data Export to MS-EXCEL

If you click on the to.xls button, all displayed measurements will be exported to an MS Excel file
filename_export.xls in the same directory as the source file. The file template export1.xls is located in
the directory …\UltraTestLab\data. The template can be adjusted and enhanced individually, or another
file can be selected (see 3.2.5 Software > Paths). This feature requires MS Excel 2003 or higher installed
(MS Excel 2000 is possible on request).

The features cursor, print, zoom, envelopes, graphic marks, x-axis, and grid are identical with the
features in the online graphs window (see 3.4 Online Graphs).

Caution: File 8 is predefined as the reference curve for the envelope feature here. For the cursor
feature, the respective channel can be selected by means of the arrow keys in the file display.

- 38 -
3.6.3 Parameter

By clicking on a new window will open where data and description of the selected
measurement can be displayed and changed.

Sample, text and user can also be amended after the measurement has been finished.

Distance [mm] - If the measuring distance is amended later, the velocity and derivation will be
recalculated.

Mix. Time - Increasing the mixing time (e.g. of 5 minutes) will move the curve of the setting process on
the time axis by 5 minutes to the right. The UltraTestLab version V3.00.43 and higher does allow
amendments of the mixing time during the active measurement (online graphs).

Dyn. E-Module - The density of the material and the Poisson's ratio are necessary to calculate the dynamic
e-modulus. If the density is not known, it can be calculated by weighting the test specimen. For some
measurement forms the volume is already stored. For standard shapes 140-50 (D50), the volume is 95 ml.

The Poisson's ratio µ is often not known for all products. Therefore for many cement bonded materials a
value of µ=0.20 ... 0.22 is assumed.

Clicking on will switch between the channels.

Info File - For each stored measurement, an individual info file can be stored. This file may include any
content. This option is helpful to store all data relevant to a particular measurement, see pic at the next
page:

- 39 -
3.6.4 Material Data Base (Material DB)

The material database can store measurement parameters as well as material data and descriptions for
any number of products or materials. By selecting an already generated material all parameters and
descriptions for new measurements are automatically adopted.

The material database can be opened from two program locations:

1. Configuration measurements  Parameter  Material: details

2. Evaluation -> Material DB

- 40 -
Click on „Details“ or „Material DB“ and the start screen opens:

The material data base allows storage of parameter sets of measuring data settings.

Description

No.: Alphanumeric material number (determines the sort sequence)

Name: Material designation
Sample: sample designation / batch number / etc.
Text: further description of recipe, mixing procedure, measurement conditions etc
User: User / laboratory designation
Density: Density of the material in kg/m³
Poisson ratio: Cross contraction number (approximation for concretes approx. 0.22)
(both values are used to calculate the dyn. Modulus of elasticity)

Duration: Measurement duration in days and hours, measuring interval in minutes and
seconds

Distance: The sensor distance can be entered. This is helpful if various different measuring
forms are in use (due to varying aggregate size). The value for standard measuring
forms is 40 mm.

Evaluation: Parameters can be set as described under 3.2.9 Measurement Parameters –

Points.

At the very right, reference data can be entered:

Reference file: Storage location for a reference curve for this measurement

3.6.5 Sub-Window Log (Log File)

The sub-window log displays the log file with all saved measurement files. By clicking on the column
headers, you can sort the column data, which makes it easier to find measurements again.

Sorting options are: No. / Date / Time / File / Sample / Text / User

Double-clicking on the row of a measurement loads the measurement values and

opens the sub-window file, in which the display channel can be selected. After the
first installation, the table contains two sample measurements, Sample 1 and
Sample 2.

Delete will remove the highlighted rows from the log file. The log file itself will
not be deleted.

3.6.6 Sub-Window „Read BP“ (for BP-700 Pro and BP-7 Tester only)
This feature reads the measurements saved in the BP-7 and
saves them in the *.lvm format. For this feature you need
to set the BP-7 to the “PC” and “read” mode.

After the files have been read, the data can be displayed in
the “evaluation” window, printed, and exported as *.xls file.
The imported files will be included in the log file. Double-
clicking the row will display the imported file in the
subordinate window “file”.

3.7 Test
The testing feature allows for quick testing of all channels and checking the measuring distance through
measuring the sonic velocity in air.

 Individual tests or interval operation for all free channels. Displays runtime, velocity, and
temperature.

 The velocity is calculated using the entered measuring distance.

 In air, the system should detect a velocity of about 343 +-3 m/s (at 20°C).

 Activating the feature, calculates and displays the sonic

velocity in air with relation to the air temperature. The measured value
(343.64 m/s) can thus easily be compared to the corrected nominal value
(345.0 m/s at 22.6°C).

 If additional measurements are activated, their measurement values will be displayed as well.
(Shrinkage and Quelling will be measured with the Mitutoyo measuring gauge here).

- 43 -
BP-7 Version 4.0 and 4.1 only - After restarting the BP-7, you need to set the BP-7 to the “PC” measuring
mode prior to the first measurement. Then you need to send a start signal by clicking the Start button
ONCE. You must NOT send a start signal for subsequent measurements - click on “skip”.

3.7.1 Dynamic E Modulus

The dynamic elasticity modulus is calculated using the
following formula:

Edyn = ρ * v² * k

k = (1 + μ) * (1 - 2μ) / (1 - μ)
µ= Poisson's ratio
v= sonic velocity in [m/s]
ρ= density of the sample in [kg/dm³]

In many cases, μ ≈ 0.2 can be assumed for concrete

without significant errors. A simplified formula with µ=0 and
k=1 is sometimes used (see also ASTM C1419-4).
With µ = 0 the value for Edyn is 10% higher than the value
for Edyn with µ=0,2

The dynamic E modulus is defined only for firm materials. Calculations for green mortar do not yield any
useful values.

3.7.2 OK / NOK Testing (Traffic Light Function)
When testing similar parts, quality assurance often uses reference values. In the example below, parts with
a runtime ≤ 50 µs are classified as OK. For runtimes over 70 µs, the part is to be considered defective.

Ultrasonic runtime

≤ 50 µs: part is OK
> 50 µs and ≤ 70 µs: ? / review
> 70 µs: part is not OK / NOK

If only one threshold value is defined, the undefined area is

omitted and the part is only classified as OK/NOK.

3.7.3 Test Methods for Ultrasonic Sound Velocity Through Concrete

Measurement at cured concrete is standardized worldwide.

The devices described in this manual comply with the following standards:

 EN 12504-4 (Europe)
 ASTM C597-09 (North America)
 IS13311 (Part 1) (India)

3.8 Specimen
The chapter Specimens deals with the measurement and storage of solid specimens such as e.g. prisms.
In this area, measuring processes for different test specimens can be created and managed. The strength
development can be displayed as a graphic. When entering the corresponding parameters (density and
Poisson number), the dynamic modulus of elasticity can also be displayed with absolute values (in GPa).

Under Control, there is an overview of all created test specimens with active or finished test series. For
the test series that have not been completed, the time for the next measurement is displayed in the "Next
test" column. By pressing on the column header, the measurement series can be sorted according to the
selected parameter. When clicking on the column header "Next test", the measurement series can be, for
example, sorted in chronological order for the next test to be performed. The red line mark may indicate
the measurement with the longest overdue. The default path for storing measurements is entered at the
bottom left at ‘Path for measured values’.

The ‘New test block’ key allows the creation of a new test specimen. After a specimen is created it can
be edited any time later. However, the following initial input options only exist at this point:

 LIMS no. - Enter LIMS number

 Filename - Location of the specimen data
 Sample creation - Date and time of specimen creation
 Distance - Length of the specimen in mm

The following settings are also available in edit mode:

 Type of test block

 Any text can be entered
 No. of checkpoints

- 46 -
The following setting points are also possible in the edit mode:

Type of test block: Any text can be entered

No. of checkpoints: Here you can set the number of measuring points on a test specimen, a maximum
of 5 measuring points is possible.
Test interval: Here you can select which test times, according e.g. to standards EN 196 or ASTM
C109, should be included in the measurement. Each single measuring interval can
be switched on or off.
Comment, user: Here you can enter individual text.

Below dyn. E-module the necessary parameters for

the calculating the dynamic modulus of elasticity can be
set (density and Poisson ratio). The density can also be
calculated by the system. For this purpose, the
corresponding parameters of the test specimen can be
entered on the left side under ‘density’. By pressing ‘calc.
density’, the density calculation is being executed and
the calculated value entered in the ‘density’ field on the
right. Save stores all entries. In edit mode, this button
is named ‘change’.

- 47 -
Under the Measurement tab, further measured values are assigned to a test specimen.

For the measurement, the test interval to be processed

can be selected, as well as the channel to be measured
and the measuring interval, ie the time interval of the
individual measurements during the current measuring
process. For a better overview during the measuring
process, the current measured value is displayed in the
field at the top right.

In addition to the selection key for the file to be edited, the Edit button can be
used to open a window for editing the measuring process. Here the number of
measurement points used for the measurement as well as the test intervals for
which measurement values are to be acquired can be defined. Description see
„New test block“

The Graph key enables display in one diagram of the measured values for
ultrasonic velocity and dynamic E modulus.

4 System Extensions

4.1 Shrinkage Measurement

The quelling and shrinkage of many building materials is measured by means of “shrinkage grooves” and
digital measuring gauges. Any measuring gauge can be connected through the Mitutoyo “Digimatic” or a
compatible interface. Depending on the expansion stage, 1, 2, 4 or 8 channels are possible.

The elongation can be displayed as an additional graph above the ultrasonic velocity and the temperature.
It is also possible to measure the elongation independent of the ultrasonic velocity. With some kinds of
measuring gauges, the accuracy can be increased from 0.01 mm to 0.001 mm.

4.1.1 Setup of Shrinkage Measurement

4.1.2 Start of Shrinkage Measurement

After successful installation, the shrinkage measurement can be activated in addition to any normal
measurement. As usual, the measuring parameters such as duration and interval can be set in the set up
measurement window.

In the area for the additional channel, you can select the
corresponding measuring gauge Length C1 to Length
C8.

It is also possible to select up to two additional channels

simultaneously, for example Length C1 and Length C2 as a confirmatory measurement.

After starting the measurement, you can now choose to display or to hide the
additional channels (here length) as well as the temperature and acceleration
graphs in the Online Graphs window.

The elongation will also be displayed in the online tables. Under evaluation, the
additional channels are displayed as Add. Ch.1 and Add. Ch.2. The length values
can be exported to MS Excel by clicking on to.xls (see 3.6.2 Data Export to MS
Excel).

4.2 External Temperature Measurement

By default, IP-8 systems are equipped with thermo sensors. In addition, you can connect an 8-channel USB
thermo logger to the system. This way, the temperature curve of a second material sample can be
measured in a climate chamber or under adiabatic conditions.

All commercially available thermocouples of the types B, E, J, K, N, R, S, and T

can be connected using common plugs. The temperature ranges from -40 …
+1820 °C.

- 50 -
4.2.1 Installation of External Temperature Measurement
1. Install the current version of UltraTestLab (version
1.4.45 or higher).
2. Insert the included software CD in your CD-ROM
drive and follow the instructions on the screen.
3. Let the system search for the USB driver
automatically and follow the prompts.
Ignore the Windows compatibility warning and
install the driver.
4. The external temperature measurement option
can be unlocked with a licence key:
Info  Licence  Options
5. Activate the external temperature measurement:
Configuration  Additional Measurements 
External Thermometers  on

4.2.2 Start of External Temperature Measurement

After successful installation, the external temperature measurement can be activated in addition to any
normal measurement. As usual, the measuring parameters such as duration and interval can be set in the
set up measurement window. During the running measurement, the temperature curve will be displayed
by activating Temp. ext.

4.3 Differential Temperature / Room Temperature

This feature eliminates the variation in temperature of
the sample temperature and the room temperature in
non air-conditioned laboratories. For the measurement
only the increase of temperature will be displayed.

A temperature sensor measures the room temperature

and this will be subtracted from the sample temperature.

T Diff =T Kanal 1..8 –T Raum

TDiff therefore shows only the temperature change in the

material sample by exothermic reaction.

This Feature is switch on with and is therefore activated as an additional channel for each
measurement (see 3.3.3 Additional Channels).

5 Troubleshooting
The majority of known problems is caused by defective measuring cables or USB cables.

 Check the device settings according to 3.2.2 “Configuration  Interface  Connected device.”
default: “IP-8 V3.0” since 09/2012

 Close the application and restart Windows. Restart UltraTestLab, select interface USB-IP-8, and
run “Test” (see 3.7 Test). The characteristic clicking of the transmitters should be audible.

 If the system malfunctions on only some of the channels:

1. Replace the measuring cable by a working cable

2. Assign the transducers to a working channel
3. Immediately replace defective measuring cables by new ones

 If the temperature measurement is missing:

1. Disconnect the thermometer from the faulty channel (see 3.2.3 configuration -> delete
assignation)
2. Re-assign the thermometer
3. Run “test” and check if the room temperature is displayed

 Check power supply: the voltage should be between 11.8 V and 12.2 V.
(The positive pole is inside the plug.)

 In the case of individual extremely high velocity values, the threshold value is usually reached too
early due to interferences. Possible reasons for such interferences are:

1. Mechanical/acoustic interferences caused by e.g.:

a. Fans or air blowers near the measuring location
b. Vibrations caused by machines close by (e.g. vibrating tables etc.)
c. Noisy “acoustically impure“ environment, possibly out of hearing range
2. Electrical interferences form strong electromagnetic fields

All IP-8 systems from version V3.0 on include an interference level measurement feature that is factory
activated (see 3.2.14 Diagnosis - Noise Level).
