Lesson: `At the zoo`

Type of lesson: Lesson of communication of new knowledge

Aims:

 To develop and practice vocabulary knowledge

 To involve students in conversation

 To raise interest in the topic

 To have fun while learning English

Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

 To name and talk about animals


 To practice animal names
 To say a chant
 To improve students’ listening skills
 To sing a song
 To give students practice with It’s a + adj (big/small) ….
Time: 45 minutes

Aids: textbook, notebook, worksheet, pc, speakers, interactive smart board,

Methods used: conversation, example, classification, dialogue, explanation, demonstration.

Assumptions:

 They should know in English at least some animal words

Anticipated problems:

 If students do not understand the oral command or the task, this will be translated into
Romanian.

ORGANIZATION OF THE CLASS

Time: 2 min
Aims:
-T prepares students for the English lesson, the teacher creates the specific
atmosphere, asking the children about how do they feel today. T prepares the
necessary aids. The students get ready for the English class.
Using English at the beginning of the lesson creates an `English language
atmosphere`, establishing connection between the teacher and the students, and helps
the students feel relaxed.

PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING

Teacher’s task: greets the Ss and makes sure that T- Ss


everything is in order for the lesson to begin. Ss- T 2 min

the student that catches it is supposed to say an

Ss have fun while playing the game. The Ss catch the

INTRODUCING THE NEW TOPIC

Time: 5 min
Aids: flashcards
Aims: to get the students familiar with the topic and what they will do during the
lesson.

PRESENTING THE TOPIC:
Time: 10 min
Aids: textbook, notebook, speakers, cd, pc.
Aims: - to practice animal names

Activity I
Teacher’s task:. T asks the students to pay attention at
the exercise 1 from page 44. T tells Ss to point to the T- Ss
two characters and ask who they are. (Where are they?, Ss- T 5 min
What animals can you see in the poster?, How many T-S
are there?) Listening
Explanation
T uses the textbook and the cd of the textbook. While T Drilling
plays the cd, he asks Ss first to listen and then to say Writing
the words.
T plays the cd twice. At the first listening, T asks the Ss
just to pay attention and listen while at the second
listening T asks Ss to listen and to point on the book.

T drills new words using choral and individual


repetition.

T puts down on the board the new words and he asks


the Ss to put them down into their notebooks. He asks
individually some of the Ss to spell the words.

Students’ task: Ss pay attention, listen carefully, point


on the image from the book and repeat. Ss read the
words in order, as they are listed in the book.
Ss spell the words when they are asked and they put
them down.

Activity II- Listen and chant

Teacher’s task: T asks Ss to leave the book opened at


the same page because they are going to do the exercise
2, which says: Listen and Chant. T- Ss
Before the chant, T elicits from Ss what they can see in Ss- T
the pictures. T asks what color and size the animals are. T-S

T plays the cd twice. At the first listening, T asks the Ss

just to pay attention, listen, while at the second Listening 5min
listening T asks Ss to chant with the cd. Speaking
If it’s necessary T, will play the cd three times. Chanting
Right after, T will chant the text with all the kids and
individually with some of them.

Students’ task: Ss answer T’s questions. Ss pay


attention, listen carefully, follow the lines. Ss chant
with the T and chant individually when T asks them to.

REINFORCEMENT:

Teacher’s task: T gives Ss a time limit to look at the T- Ss


silhouettes in their book. T plays the recording and Ss Ss-T 5 min
have to listen and stick. T plays the recording again for T-S
Ss to check their work. Listening
T practices the new language with the kids, doing the Speaking
second exercise from the same page. T plays the
recording for Ss to listen and repeat.

Students’ task: Ss have to listen, take out their stickers


and place them on the silhouettes. For the second
exercise, Ss listen, repeat and they look at the pictures in
the first exercise.

Activity II T- Ss
Ss-T
Teacher’s task: T asks Ss to leave the book opened at T-S
the same page. They will do together the third exercise. Speaking
T asks Ss to focus on the first picture. T tells Ss to point Drawing
5 min
at the incomplete cub and he guides Ss to guess what it
is. T encourages Ss to use It’s a + adj. (big/small)…
T gives Ss a time limit to complete the other pictures. T
asks Ss individually.

Students’ task: Ss complete the pictures, they guess


what animal is it. They say what they see using the
indicated language structure.

Activity III- Listen and sing

Teacher’s task: T tells Ss to turn the page and to look at


the picture from exercise 1. T asks Ss questions of what T- Ss
they see in the picture. Ss-T
T plays the audio song two or more times and he sings T-S
with the class. T also plays the song video, pausing after Speaking
each verse for Ss to repeat. When Ss have learnt the Singing 10 min
song, T uses the karaoke version to practice the song
with the whole class.
Students’ task: Ss look at the picture and tell T what
they see. Ss listen and sing the song.

FEEDBACK AND HOMEWORK

Time: 5 min
Aid: rewards
Aims: to give feedback and assign homework

PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING


/METHODS
Teacher’s task: assigns a homework task, giving them
to solve the exercise two from page 42. Ss have to find
and circle four animals in the song. Teacher expresses T- Ss
his appreciation for the class. Before saying Good bye Assign homework

to all the Ss, he gives them stickers as rewards for

Students’ task: They put down their homework task
