LessonPlan Grade10 Measures of Position Quartiles

This document contains a semi-detailed lesson plan for a 60-minute mathematics lesson on measures of position for 10th grade students. The lesson plan aims to teach students how to illustrate quartiles for ungrouped data and calculate the lower quartile, middle quartile, and upper quartile using different methods. The lesson will begin with an opening activity to motivate students and activate prior knowledge on dividing data into parts. Students will then learn about quartiles and how to find the first, second, and third quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3) using Tukey's method and Mendenhall and Sincich method with examples. Application activities will have students practice finding quartiles from real data sets. The

A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10

LESSON INFORMATION
Date: May 29, 2023 Subject: Mathematics 10
Grade Level: Grade 10-Mendell Schedule:

CONTENT STANDARD
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of measures of position.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner is able to conduct systematically a mini-research applying the different statistical methods.
LEARNING COMPETENCY:
The learner illustrates the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles and percentiles.

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the 60-minute lesson, at least 75% of the learners are expected to:
a. Illustrate the quartiles for ungrouped data;
b. Calculate the lower quartile, middle quartile and upper quartile of a set of data using
Mendenhall and Sincich method or Tukey’s method; and
c. Appreciate the importance of measures of position in real life situations.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Time allotment: 60 minutes
Values Integration: Cooperation and Unity

III. PROCEDURES

Preliminary Activities
Opening Prayer, Greetings, Checking of Attendance, Recall Classroom Rules, Review of the Past
Lesson
Motivation
The teacher will explain the short and simple activity called 4 pics 1 word game. This will be
participated by the learners to give them an idea about the new lesson to be discussed.

(1) MEASURE (2) POSITION (3) DIVIDE (4) EQUAL (5) PARTS
The lesson is all about Quartile - Measure of Position that divides a set of data into four equal
parts.
A. ACTIVITY
The class will have another activity through the game called “The Boat is Sinking”. The teacher
will now give the mechanics of the game that would fit to activate learners prior knowledge.
This game will help them to make connections to the new lesson.
Game Mechanics:
1. Arrange the data from least to greatest or from lowest to the highest based on the given
category.
2. Identify the median.
3. Identify the lower half of the values.
4. Identify the median of the lower half of the values.
5. Identify the upper half of the values.
6. Identify the median of the upper half of the values.
NOTE: You can illustrate your answer for better understanding.

B. ANALYSIS
The teacher will ask the following questions:
Were you able to get the correct answers?
What did you employ/apply to answer the activity? (Division)
Why did you use that? (to find the median)
How did it help you to find the answer? (by dividing the data into 4)
When you heard the word QUARTILE, what comes to your mind?

C. ABSTRACTION

Measures of Position are techniques that divide a set of data into equal groups.
To determine the measurement of position, the data must be sorted from lowest to highest or
highest to lowest. One of the measures of position is Quartiles.
Quartiles divide the ordered set of data into four equal parts.

Since Q2 is equal to the median, the steps for finding the median is the same. To get Q1, we get
the median of the lower half. To find Q 3, we get the median of the upper half. This is called the
Tukey’s Method.

Example 1:
The score of 10 students in their Mathematics quiz Answer:
are as follows: 10, 11, 9, 12, 14, 15, 8, 7, 6, 4 Ordered data = 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
11, 12, 14, 15
Find the first, second and third quartiles from the Q1 = 7
following
(Class everyset of numbers.
time Q2 = 9.5 when it comes to academic or
you are always on the top of your classmates
Q3 = 12
any other thing please be reminded that we should always humble ourselves no matter what
your rank is.)
Another method in finding for quartiles is Mendenhall and Sincich Method.
Given a data set with n number of values:
 First, we arrange the data in ascending order.
 Next, we find the position of the quartile in the data set using the formula:
 Then, round up to thek nearest integer.
Qk = Where k = number of quartile
 Finally, look for the value
4 of the quartile in the data set.
n = number of values
(n+1)
Example 2:
A group of students recorded the number of curl
Answer:
ups they made during their PE subjects as Ordered data = 2, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 9
follows: Q1 = 4
9, 2, 5, 7, 4, 5, 6 Q2 = 5
Find the first, second and third quartiles from the Q3 = 7
following set of numbers.
(The teacher will ask the students why is it important to do the curl up and what part of the
body is being exercised when doing a curl up. PE Integration.)

D. APPLICATION
The teacher will give different tasks to the group.
Activity Activity
Task: Ask all members of the group about their Task: Ask all members of the group about
weight. Arrange your data in ascending order their 3rd grading math grade. Arrange your
and answer the following questions. data in ascending order and answer the
following questions.

Activity Activity
Task: Ask all members of the group about the Task: Ask all members of the group about
age of their mother. Arrange your data in their height. Arrange your data in ascending
ascending order and answer the following order and answer the following questions.
questions.

Data: _________________________
Illustrate the quartiles of your data.
Find the Q1, Q2 and Q3 of the data set.

E. GENERALIZATION

What is quartile? Quartile divides the arranged set of data into four equal parts.
What are the three values that divides the arranged data into 4 equal parts? Q1, Q2 and Q3
How to find quartiles for ungrouped data? Using Tukey’s Method and Mendenhall and Sincich Method
When do we apply measures of position? Making comparisons for a large amount of data

IV. EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT

Direction: Illustrate the quartiles of the given data and determine the Q 1, Q2 and Q3 by using any of the
two methods. Write your answer in a ¼ sheet of paper.

The Grade 10 students are having their project in Entrepreneurship class where
they sell different coffee drinks in a day.

Find the Q1, Q2 and Q3 from the data above.

What is the importance of finding the quartiles to the project of the Grade 10
students?
V. ASSIGNMENT

Here is another activity for you to apply what you have learned. Make a survey with your classmates.
Think of a question that will prompt you and your classmates to give a quantitative data. Find your
position based on the data values and make an interpretation. (Write it in your Mathematics notebook.)
