INTRODUCTION
Before we dive into the benefits of ICT to both security and the aviation sector, we have to
explain what ICT is;
ICT stands for information communication technology. The term ICT generally means all
devices, networking components, applications and systems that combined allow people and
organizations (i.e., businesses, nonprofit agencies, governments and criminal enterprises) to
interact in the digital world.
SECURITY SECTOR
Let's look at what the term security entails.
Security is protection from or resilience against potential harm or other unwanted coercion
caused by others ( wikipedia.com )
Security is any objective sense, measures the absence of threat to acquire values, in a
subjective sense, the absence of fear that such value will be attached (Collins 2018)
The security sector can be a body of entity, organisations(private or government) that protect
human and their possession, private or national confidential information from unauthorized
use, modification, theft or loss.
BENEFITS OF ICT TO SECURITY SECTOR
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has revolutionized the way we live our
lives, including in the security sector. We will discuss the benefits of ICT on the security
sector.
One of the key benefits of ICT in the security sector is the ability to monitor and track criminal
activities more effectively. With the help of advanced technologies such as CCTV cameras,
biometric scanners, and facial recognition software, security agencies can now monitor and
identify suspects more easily. This has made it easier to catch criminals and reduce crime
rates. For example, in the United Kingdom, the use of CCTV cameras has been instrumental in
reducing crime rates. Studies have shown that CCTV cameras have reduced crime rates by up
to 51% in some areas.
Increased timeliness. In the pen and paper-based world that traditionally characterized the
security industry, there was no choice but to manage after the fact. Now, security
professionals carry mobile devices that are in constant communication with back office
systems and command centers, enabling organizations to ‘see’ events as they unfold and
respond accordingly. Responses can be carried out at record speed as well as behind the
scenes, such as notifying building maintenance of a sudden water leak or alerting clients
about dangerous temperature thresholds in their computer server rooms.
Rich reporting. Security workforce management software is not only changing the way
reports are created but is also making it easier to analyze the wealth of information
contained in those reports. When mobile security professionals are equipped with dynamic
reporting capabilities, any video footage or photos captured in the field are automatically
embedded into their reports. At the same time, report templates are site or client specific
and provide prompts to ensure that the ‘who, what, where, why and when’ of an incident is
completely recorded. Reports are easily searchable in a database and can be analyzed to spot
trends or make cost-saving adjustments to the security service being provided.
Advanced analytics. As soon as a company’s security workforce management activities are
online, the power of electronic data is at its fingertips. In the past, companies gathered good
information, but had no easy way to run analytics on paper reports or standalone electronic
documents. Now, security organizations hold a competitive edge by applying big data and
business intelligence tools to glean valuable insights for each client from an integrated suite
of software that is easily searchable. They can make better decisions about where resources
are needed most and put them into effect immediately and also provide historical reports to
demonstrate how security is adding value – a powerful bargaining tool when budget cuts are
on the line.
Another benefit of ICT in the security sector is the ability to collect and analyze data
more effectively. With the help of advanced software such as data mining tools and
predictive analytics, security agencies can now collect and analyze large amounts of data
more effectively. This has made it possible to identify potential threats and prevent them
before they occur. For example, the United States Department of Homeland Security uses
predictive analytics to identify potential terrorist threats. This has helped prevent several
terrorist attacks.
ICT has also made it possible to improve border security. With the help of advanced
technologies such as biometric scanners and facial recognition software, border security
agencies can now identify potential threats more easily. This has made it possible to prevent
the entry of illegal immigrants and terrorists. For example, the United States Department of
Homeland Security uses biometric scanners to identify potential threats at the border.
Moreover, ICT has made it possible to improve the security of critical infrastructure such as
power plants, water treatment plants, and transportation systems. With the help of
advanced technologies such as sensors and data analytics, security agencies can now monitor
critical infrastructure more effectively. This has made it possible to identify potential threats
and prevent them before they occur. For example, the United States Department of
Homeland Security uses sensors to monitor the water supply in major cities.
AVIATION SECTOR
The aviation sector is the business sector dedicated to manufacturing and operating all types
of aircraft.
The aviation industry encompasses almost all aspects of air travel and the activities that help
to facilitate it. This means it includes the entire airline industry, aircraft manufacturing,
research companies, military aviation and much more.
BENEFITS OF ICT IN AVIATION SECTOR
Computers are the most necessary part of life in this era; we are totally dependent on
Computers in our daily life as we have need of computers in every field of life, Aviation is that
industry which uses computers in very large scale. Aviation is the fastest industry, human
speed and manually doing work is not efficient for proper and fast results.
From preparing tickets to Air-craft manufacturing, Computers are originally that point from
which all aviation revolves around. Today the world is fast and technical, just because of
Computer. Use of computer was involved in Aviation just after Wright Brothers flew at Kitty
Hawk. Gyroscopes were introduced to Aircraft which is known as Auto-Pilot. It’s a complete
use of computer for operations. Even in World War Two, B-17 and B-29 Bombers was
calculating devices which were connected to Auto-Pilot, which controlled Aircraft to remain
steady during bombardment. Computers were used in 1950 for Wind tunnel test.
Aircraft manufacturers started using computers for Designs and accuracy. Designing a plane
such as a large passenger airplane is an immensely complex job involving thousands of
engineers and ultimately hundreds of thousands of pages of blueprint (planning of design). In
1980's, Boeing decided to build a new large passenger jet and the program's managers made
a fundamental and drastic decision to design the plane entirely on computers, without using
traditional paper designs. The result was the Boeing 777, which first flew in 1994 which many
people referred to as "the first 21st Century Jet." B-777 was the first Aircraft based
completely on Computer.
Computers are used in every department of Aviation. For ticket reservation, computers are
used. Now the technology has become so advanced, for the ease of costumers Airlines are
providing e-ticketing services through internet and travelers now have the opportunity and
convenience to compare price and service offerings of all airlines quickly and efficiently and
to act on those comparisons instantly with only a few keystrokes
ICT tools such as predictive maintenance systems can help airlines identify potential issues in
aircraft before they become major problems, thus reducing maintenance costs and increasing
aircraft availability. ICT tools such as big data analytics can help airlines gather and analyze
large amounts of data to gain insights into customer behavior, operational efficiency, and
other key areas. ICT tools can help improve airport security through the use of advanced
screening technologies, biometric
identification systems, and real-time monitoring of passenger behavior.
Flight planning is an example of using computer in Direct Aviation related to operations.
Flight Officers use computers for their flight plan, a big flight plan just complete in half an
hour with the help of computers. Without computers it might take up to 4-5 hours.
Computerized flight planning is fuel efficient, while manually is not. Computerized flight
planning system is able to provide the most cost and time effective RAD compliant route.
ATC uses Computers for perfect and accurate direction, handle all landing, takeoff and ground
traffic from tower with the help of computers. As an aircraft travels through a given airspace
division, it is monitored by the one or more air traffic controllers responsible for that division.
The controllers monitor this plane and give instructions to the pilot. As the plane leaves that
airspace division and enters another, the air traffic controller passes it off to the controllers
responsible for the new airspace division, just with technology and computers.
Onboard entertainment system is a perfect use of computer during flight. Airlines offer
different entertainment facilities to make their costumers facilitated with technology. Wi-Fi
service onboard for passengers is also an example of advance computer and technology
system.
Aircrafts are coming with advanced technologies. Smarter screens, glass cockpit everything is
becoming smarter with advancement in Computers. A glass cockpit is an aircraft cockpit that
features electronic (digital) flight instrument displays, typically large LCD screens. Airbus is
going to make Smarter Skies vision 2050, just because of technology and Advance computer.
With the vision to make pilot less cockpit, that will just operate on Autopilot and Artificial
Intelligence.
In Aviation industry computers are also used for Aircraft engineering, Scanning Aircraft before
and after flight, fleet managing, and keeping records of Aircraft, employee’s data base record
and for many other options. HR department uses computers for keeping records, for making
job posted on their website, career built in, and for many other reasons.
CONCLUSION
ICT has impacted human's life beyond imagination, making things more easier for us. ICT has
affected more sectors positively and will continue to do so
