Setting the current

• 7 setting DIP switches are provided in order to adjust the

NEF to the name plate full load current of the motor
• The current ranges are as follows:
• NEF-40 8.25 to 40 amps in 0.25 amp steps
• NEF-160 33 to 160 amps in 1 amp steps
• With all the switches off (to the right) the basic settings
are 8.25 and 33 amps respectively
• By switching the switches over to the left the current
setting is increased according to which switches are on

NEF-40 NEF-160

• In the example NEF-40, switches 1 (0.25A), 2 (0.5A) and 3 (1A) are to the left, therefore the
setting = 8.25 basic + 0.25 + 0.5 + 1, which is equal to 10 amps full load

• In the example NEF-160, switches 2 and 4 are added to the basic 33A setting = 33 + 2 + 8 = 43A

NEF Product Familiarisation 6

Current below 8.25 amps (1)

• With the NEF-40 it is possible to loop the 3 motor feed wires through the current transformer
which then allows lower currents to be set
• The current set on the switches is then divided by the number of CT loops
• Example 1; the current to be monitored is 5.0 amps. With 2 loops, the lowest current setting
becomes 8.25 / 2 = 4.125 amps
• If we multiply the current by 2 then 5.0 x 2 = 10. We therefore set the switches to 10 amps

No. of loops Effective setting range (A)

2 4.125…20

4 2.063…10

5 1.65….8

Current below 8.25 amps (2)

• Example: 5 loops of 2.5mm2 cable, which gives operation range of 1.65…8A.

Setting the trip class

• The NEF tripping curves can be adjusted to suit the application and to match the unit to the
motor’s thermal withstand capabilities. This is achieved by the use of 2 DIP switches on the
front panel. By adding the switch settings together, a range of tripping times can be set from 5
seconds to 30 seconds based on 6 times full load current (FLC)
• A standard setting of 10 seconds (switch 1 to the left), corresponds to that of a standard motor
and is equivalent to that of a normal thermal overload
• For motors with higher thermal capacity and for longer run-up times, a correspondingly higher setting
should be used
• For motors with lower thermal capacity and short run-up times, a lower setting should be used
• Refer to thermal withstand specifications made by motor manufacturers

NEF Product Familiarisation 9

Time Current Curves

Example: with trip class 20,

the NEF will trip within 20
seconds if the current is
600% of motor FLC

• Hot start and cold start refer to the temperature of the motor when starting
• A hot start is considered a time that a motor has been restarted in less than 30 minutes from the
previous start or after an overload condition has been experienced
• A cold start is an initial start or when a motor has not been ran for at least 30 minutes

NEF Product Familiarisation 10

Thermistor input

• The NEF incorporates a thermistor input

• If this function is not required a 1k resistor (supplied) must be installed across
terminals T1 and T2 of the NEF
• The NEF will trip if the thermistor chain is open, shorted or over temperature

• Technical data
• Max. resistance of thermistors 1500
• Max. no. of PTC sensors 6
• Overtemperature 3500
• Short circuit 50
• Indication LED

NEF Product Familiarisation 11

Choice of reset method

• Manual
• Reset is achieved by pressing the Reset pushbutton on the front of
the NEF after a suitable cool-down time 1)

• Automatic
• Short-circuit terminals 7 and 8
• The NEF will automatically reset after the minimum time depending
on alarm
• Manual reset pushbutton is disabled

• Remote
• Max. cable distance is 30 metres

1) Minimum cool-down time to reset in manual condition is 6x the selected trip class.
