OBJECTIVES:

1. Compute and interpret the point and interval estimates of parameters.

2. Compute and interpret the length of the interval formed.
3. Solve each problem using Microsoft Excel.

TASKS

Read and understand each item carefully. Identify the appropriate probability distribution and use Microsoft Excel as
a tool to solve each problem. (10 points each)

1. The contents, in milliliters (mL), of 16 similar bottles of Bignay Wine are as follows: 498, 490, 502, 500, 500, 492,
493, 501, 503, 489, 495, 504, 500, 500, 496 and 506. Assuming the contents is normally distributed, determine the
following:

A. the good point estimates of the mean, variance and standard deviation of the contents of all bottles of
Bignay Wine.

Contents of the Bignay

Wine

Mean 498.0625
Standard Error 1.266454204
Median 500

Standard Deviation 5.065816815 Standard deviation 5.06
Sample Variance 25.6625 Variance 25.6625
-
Kurtosis 0.794614658 Therefore, The Average Mean of 16 similar bottles of wine is
- 498.42 with a Standard deviation of 5.24 and a Variance of 27.494
Skewness 0.417975869

Maximum 506
Sum 7969

B. The 95% CI for the mean contents of all the bottles of Bignay Wine.

498.06 -1.96 ¿)≤ μ ≤ x +1.96 ¿

= 498.06−2.47 ≤ 𝜇 ≤ 498.06 + 2.47

= 495.59 ≤ 𝜇 ≤ 500.53

Therefore, based on the results of the calculation The 95% confident that the true mean will be within (495.59,500.53)

C. The length of the 95% CI Interval for the mean contents of all the bottles of Bignay Wine.

The length of the CI interval is [495.59,500.53] thus,

Length = 495.59 - 500.53

= 4.94

Therefore, the length of the 95% confidence interval for the mean contents of all bottles of Bignay Wine is 4.95 ml.

Conclusion

A. The average mean of 16 similar bottles of wine is 498.42 ml with a standard deviation of 5.24 ml and a variance of
27.494 ml^2.

B. The 95% confidence interval for the mean contents of all the bottles of Bignay Wine is [495.59, 500.53] ml, which
means that we can be 95% confident that the true mean content of all bottles of Bignay Wine falls within this range.

C. The length of the 95% confidence interval for the mean contents of all bottles of Bignay Wine is 4.95 ml, which
indicates the degree of uncertainty around the estimated mean.

2. The contents of 10 similar containers of sulfuric acid are 9.8, 10.2, 10.4, 9.8, 10.0, 10.2, 8.5, 8.9, 10.0 and 9.6 liters.
Find a 99% confidence interval for the mean content of all such containers, assuming an approximate normal
distribution for container contents.

9.74 -2.58 ¿)≤ μ ≤ x +2.58 ¿

= 9.74−0.48 ≤ 𝜇 ≤ 9.74 + 0.48

= 9.26 ≤ 𝜇 ≤ 10.22

Therefore, the confidence interval for the mean contents of all such containers at a 99% confidence level is between 9.26
and 10.22.

Conclusion

In conclusion, based on the given data, we can be 99% confident that the true mean contents of all the containers fall
within the interval of 9.26 and 10.22

3. An engineer developed a new concrete hollow blocks (CHB) use for house construction. He tested 15 samples for
compressive strength, in psi, and obtained the following results: 875, 935, 978, 830, 902, 961, 888, 847, 910, 902,
894, 930, 878, 841 and 839.

A. Find a good point estimates of the mean, variance and standard deviation of the compressive strength of
the new developed CHB.

Mean of 15 samples of compressive strength hollow blocks is 892.2 with a Standard deviation of 47.23 and a Variance
of 2231.45

B. Find the 90% confidence interval for the mean compressive strength of the new developed CHB.

892.2 -1.65 ¿)≤ μ ≤ x +1.65 ¿

= 892.2−20.12 ≤ 𝜇 ≤ 892.2+20.12

= 872.08≤ 𝜇 ≤ 912.32

Therefore, based on the results of the calculation The 90% confident that the true mean will be within (872.08,912.32)

C. Compute the length of the interval.

The length of the CI interval is (872.08,912.32) Thus,

Length = 872.08-912.32

= 40.24

Therefore, the length of the 90% confidence interval for the new developed hollow blocks by the engineer is 40.24.

Conclusion

In Conclusion, the compressive strength of 15 samples of hollow blocks was measured, and the average mean was
found to be 892.2 with a standard deviation of 47.23 and a variance of 2231.45. Based on the results of the calculation,
we can be 90% confident that the true mean compressive strength of the hollow blocks will fall within the interval of
(872.08, 912.32). The length of the 90% confidence interval for the new developed hollow blocks by the engineer is
40.24, indicating the degree of uncertainty around the estimated mean. These findings provide useful insights into the
compressive strength of the hollow blocks and can be used to inform decisions related to their manufacturing and
use.
