What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the nature of Computer Systems Servicing. The scope of this module permits
it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.
The module is divided into three lessons, namely:
Lesson 1 – Plan and prepare for termination connection of electrical
wiring/electronic circuits
Lesson 2 – Terminate/connect electrical wiring/electronic circuits
Lesson 3 – Test termination/connection of electrical wiring/electronic circuits
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. check materials according to specifications and tasks;
2. use appropriate range of methods in termination/connection in accordance to
specifications, manufacturer’s requirements, and safety;
3. check wirings and circuits using specified testing procedures; and
4. observe correct sequence in connecting electrical wiring and accessories.

5 Electrical Wiring and
Electronics Circuit
In every place you have been, electricity plays a major role in the continuing
travel of growth and development in all aspects of life. Electricity flows continuously,
giving every individual an easier way of living with the technology enhancement that
goes hand in hand with rapid change.

What’s In

Let’s try this activity. Classify each of the tools, materials and equipment given
in the table below. In your notebook, draw a container and write your answer where
they belong.

Your activity will be scored as follows:
10 = Excellent 7-9 = Very Good 4-6 = Good 1-3 = Fair 0 = Poor

What’s New
In every place, electricity plays an important role especially for electrical
devices and appliances. Can you give answers to the following questions that will
identify the role of electricity or electronics in present time?
1. What would life be without electricity or electronics?
2. Can you name some of the appliances at home that uses electricity and
how it changed your life?
3. Why do you think electricity/electronics today is important?

Plan and Prepare for Termination/Connection of Electrical Wiring/

Electronics Circuits

One of the most important skills in electrical tasks is to systematically plan

the needed materials, tools and equipment and use each appropriately to perform a
specific job.

5
What is It

Basic Materials, Tools and Equipment

Electrical installations require appropriate toolkit that should contain
appropriate tools. Instructions must be understood and properly followed. Electrical
Materials are used to control the flow of current, carry electrical load, secure wires
and protect houses, buildings, appliances, and instruments.
1. Male plug – is a device inserted on a convenient outlet and is attached with
flat cord on one end.
2. Lamp holders – hold and protect the lamp.
3. Switch – connects and disconnects flow of current in a circuit.
4. Fuse – automatically blows and cuts the current when overloaded.
5. Circuit breaker – protective device used to cut current automatically when
short circuit and overload occurs.
6. Utility box-is a rectangular shaped metal or plastic where convenient outlet
and switch are attached.
7. Electrical Wire/Conductor – is usually stranded (made of multiple strands)
and solid (made of single strand)

Tools and Equipment Used to Perform and Finish a Job

1. Screwdrivers -are used to loosen or tighten screws with slotted heads, and
comes in various sizes and shapes.
2. Hammer – is used for driving or pounding and pulling out nails. (claw
hammer, mallet, ballpeen)
3. Pliers – are used to cut, twist, bend, hold and grip wires and cables.
4. Wire stripper – is used for removing insulation of medium-sized wires from
gauge #10 to #16.
5. Portable electric drill – is used to make holes on metal sheets and concrete
walls.
6. Hacksaw – is used to cut metal conduit and armored cable.
7. Multi-Volts Power Supply – is used to supply the desired direct current
voltages in the circuit.
8. Multi-tester – is used for measuring resistance, voltage, and current.
9. Electric meter -is the device that measures the amount of electric energy
consumed.

6
Terminate/Connect electrical wiring/electronic circuits

A simple circuit requires an equipment that will operate to an AC or DC power

source. Once a design is made, a simple circuit on electronics includes fuse to
protect any circuit from the effect of excessive current. Suitable wires must be given
importance for electric current to pass through.

Connection and termination of wires needs appropriate tools and materials to

follow correct sequence of operations. Splicing of wires and joints used in electrical
wiring installation need to be prepared as to how wires are stripped. There are many
ways to splice wire together from simply using wire caps to soldering them together.
Once your wires are connected to another, cover the exposed ends with electrical
tape or shrink tubes.

Test termination/Connection of electrical wiring/electronic circuits

Termination of electrical wiring/electronic circuit is the work performed to the

end of a wire that allows it to connect to a device (connector, switch, terminal, etc.).
There are two basic categories: crimp and solder. Soldering is a process in which
two or more metal items are joined together by melting and then flowing a filler metal
into the joint; while crimping is joining two pieces of metal or other ductile material
by deforming one or both of them to hold the other.
Steps to Solder:

What I Have Learned

Identification.
Directions: In your notebook, write the correct word being referred to the following
items numbered 1-5.
1. I need (equipment, materials, tools) to finish my job for a task.
2. (Hammer, Male Plug, Screwdriver) is one of the materials for electrical jobs.

What I Can Do

Sequencing
Direction: In your notebook, arrange the following soldering process by numbering
1 as the first step and so on.

______ When the surface has been properly cleaned, a thin, even coating of flux
should be place over the surface to be tinned.
______ Dirt must be removed by chemical or mechanical means.
______ Items to be soldered should be normally be “tinned” before making mechanical
connection.
______ Connections to be soldered should be cleaned just prior to the actual soldering
operations.
______ Separate rosin flux is frequently used when wire in cable fabrication are
tinned.
