Eals Week 3

This document provides information about Earth science processes for grade 11 students. It discusses endogenic processes that occur below Earth's surface, including magmatism and how magma is formed through decompression and flux melting. It also describes how magma can be extruded onto the surface during volcanic eruptions or intruded into the Earth to form intrusive rocks.

GRADE 11

WELCOME
TO EARTH
SCIENCE
WEEK 3
MELCS
1.Describe where the Earth’s
internal heat comes from.
2.Describe how magma is formed
(magmatism ).
React with a happy
face if the
statement is correct
and a sad face if it’s
incorrect.
1. Mechanical weathering or
disintegration is the breaking up
of large rocks into smaller
fragments without changing the
rock’s mineral composition.
2. Extrusive rocks or
volcanic rocks are molten
rock or magma that has
solidified beneath Earth’s
surface.
3. Foliated is one type
of Metamorphic Rocks.
4. Dolomite is an
organic sedimentary
Rock.
5. Quartzite is an
example of Igneous
Rocks.
ENDOGENIC
PROCESS
PROCESSING
QUESTIONS
What is the difference
of the Exogenic to
Endogenic Process?
Analyze the
prefix -ENDO
and –EXO
and connect to
the word IN/
OUT.
EXOGENIC PROCESS
-external processes that occur at or near
the surface, part of the rock cycle
-They are responsible for transforming
rock into the sediment.
-It includes the degradation process
(weathering, mass wasting, erosion, and
transportation).
ENDOGENIC PROCESS
It is a geological process that
was formed, originated, and
located below the surface of the
earth. It involves geologic
activities such as tectonic
movements, metamorphism,
seismic activities and magmatism.
WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS
OF MAGMA?

HEAT IN THE
INTERIOR OF THE EARTH
1. Primordial heat and
Radioactive Heat

2. The estimated internal

temperature of the Earth
How
Magmas
are
formed?
According to Bayo-ang, et.al
(2016), the two main
mechanisms through which
rocks melt are
decompression melting and
flux melting.
DECOMPRESSION
MELTING
DECOMPRESSION- decrease in
pressure

This takes place within Earth when a

body of rock is held at approximately the
same temperature, but the pressure is
reduced. This happens because the rock
is being moved toward the surface by
means of CONVECTION CURRENT (The
movement of liquids and solids as their
temperature increases).
FLUX
MELTING
-Also known as
HYDRATION MELTING

This happens if a rock is

close to its melting point
and some water is
added to the rock, the
melting temperature is
reduced, and partial
melting starts.
PROCESSING
QUESTIONS
What do you think
happen after
magma
formation?
EXTRUSION
-It is when lava cools outside the Earth

-It is an eruption of magmatic materials

that causes land formation on the surface
of the Earth.
INTRUSION
• -When magma cools within the Earth

-It is magma that moves up into a volcano

without erupting
MAGMATIC
DIFFERENTIATION
It is the process of creating
one or more secondary
magmas from single parent
magma.

-Crystal Fractionation
-Partial Melting
-Magma Mixing

Despite being red, Mars is

actually a very cold place
