Question 12. (a) What is chromatography? For which type of mixture is it used? (b) What are the
advantages of chromatography.

Answer:

(a) Chromatography is a separation technique used to separate the different components in a liquid
mixture. It was introduced by a Russian Scientist Michael Tswett.

Chromatography involves the sample being dissolved in a particular solvent called mobile phase.
The mobile phase may be a gas or liquid. The mobile phase is then passed through another phase
called stationary phase. The stationary phase may be a solid packed in a glass plate or a piece of
chromatography paper.

The various components of the mixture travel at different speeds, causing them to separate. There
are different types of chromatographic techniques such as column chromatography, TLC, paper
chromatography, and gas chromatography.

Paper chromatography is one of the important chromatographic methods. Paper chromatography

uses paper as the stationary phase and a liquid solvent as the mobile phase. In paper
chromatography, the sample is placed on a spot on the paper and the paper is carefully dipped
into a solvent. The solvent rises up the paper due to capillary action and the components of the
mixture rise up at different rates and thus are separated from one another.

Applications:

1. To separate colors in a dye.

2. To separate pigments from natural colors.

3. To separate drugs from blood.

(b) The Advantages of Chromatography:

1. Precise separation, analyses, and purification is possible using chromatography.

2. It requires very low sample volumes.

3. It works on a wide range of samples including drugs, food particles, plastics, pesticides, air and
water samples, and tissue extracts.

4. Mixture components separated by chromatography can be collected individually.

5. It can be used to separate highly complex mixtures.

Question 13. Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

(a) A mixture of sand and ammonium chloride can be separated by

1. Filtration

2. Distillation

3. Sublimation

4. Crystallisation

Answer: (3)

Explanation:

Ammonium chloride sublime easily and can be separated from the mixture of salt and sand by the
process of sublimation.

(b) A pair of metalloids are

1. and

2. and

3. and

4. and

Answer: (2)

Explanation:

Metalloids:

Metalloids are a small group of elements founds in the periodic table of elements along the zigzag
line that distinguishes metals from non-metals and is drawn from between boron and aluminium to
the border polonium and astatine.

and are metalloids.

(c) Which of the following property is not shown by compounds?

1. They are heterogeneous.

2. They are homogeneous.

3. They have definite molecular formulae.

4. They have fixed melting and boiling points.

Answer: (1)

Explanation:

Compounds have a definite composition. So, compounds are homogeneous in nature

2. Kerosene oil

3. Alcohol

4. Petrol

Answer: (3)

Explanation:

Alcohol is used as solvent.

Because they are strongly polar, alcohols are better solvents than hydrocarbons for ionic
compounds and other polar substances.

(e) Which of the gas is highly soluble in water?

1. Ammonia

2. Nitrogen

3. Carbon monoxide

4. Oxygen

Answer: (1)

Explanation:

Ammonia is highly soluble because there is hydrogen bonding possible between ammonia and
water molecules
