TOWING AND TAXIING - GENERAL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. _______
General
This section gives information related to the towing and taxiing of the
aircraft.
It is divided as follows:
- 09 10 00/P. Block 201 TOWING
- 09 20 00/P. Block 201 TAXIING

A. Towing
You can tow the aircraft by the nose landing gear or the main landing
gear.
You can tow the aircraft with deflated tires.
R You can use these towing procedures to disengage the aircraft from the
R gate area. No other operational towing is permitted.

B. Taxiing
This section gives information related to the danger areas around the
engines.
You can taxi the aircraft with deflated tires.

A. Safety Precautions

(1) Make sure that the safety devices are installed on the landing gears
(Ref. TASK 32-00-00-481-801).

NOTE : It is optional to install the landing gear safety devices when

R departure).

(2) Make sure that the aircraft is stable (Ref. TASK 05-57-00-200-801).

(1) Make sure that the dimension H of the NLG is never greater than 310
mm (12.2047 in.) when you tow the aircraft (The compression of the
shock absorber is 100 mm (3.9370 in.)).

(1) Deactivate the nose wheel steering (Ref. TASK 32-51-00-040-801).

D. Installation of the Towbar

NOTE : We recommend that you use a towbar that has a damping system.

R NOTE : For the requirements related to towbars and towbar tractors, refer

R to the SIL 09-003.

(1) Put the tractor and the towbar (2) in position in front of the nose
landing gear aligned with the aircraft centerline.

(2) Make sure that the towbar (2) has:


- a traction shear pin calibrated at 28620 daN (64340.3071 lbf),
- a torsion pin calibrated at 3130 m.daN (23082.59 lbf.ft).

(3) Attach the towbar (1) to the nose gear fitting.

(4) Attach the towbar to the tractor.

E. Removal of the Wheel Chocks

(1) Remove the wheel chocks from the main landing gear wheels and nose
landing gear wheels.

(1) With the tractor (if the tractor has a GPU)

G. Set the Lighting System to this Configuration

(1) On the panel 215VU:


- set the EXT LT/NAV & LOGO switch to ON,
- set the EXT LT/BEACON switch to ON,
- set the INT LT/DOME switch to BRT.

H. Set the Communication System to this Configuration

R (1) Communication with the control tower (VHF)

(a) Connect a boomset to the Captain jack panel 612VU.

(b) On the Captain ACP:


- push the VHF 1 transmission pushbutton switch,
R - push and release the VHF 1 reception pushbutton switch and turn
R it clockwise (middle position).

(c) On the RMP 1:


- set the ON/OFF switch to ON,
- push the VHF 1 pushbutton switch,
- on the STBY/CRS display, set an authorized frequency with the
dual selector knob,
- push the double arrow pushbutton switch between the two
displays.

(d) To communicate:
- on the Captain ACP, set the INT/RAD switch to RAD and hold it
during the transmission.

(2) Communication with the ground mechanic

(a) On the panel 925VU:


- connect a boomset to the FLT INT jack.

(b) On the Captain ACP:


- push and release the INT reception pushbutton switch and turn
it clockwise (middle position).

(c) To communicate:
- on the Captain ACP set the INT/RAD selector switch to INT,
- at the end of the transmission, put the INT/RAD selector switch
in the middle position.

J. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration

(1) On the panel 312VU, on the triple pressure indicator:


R - make sure that the pointer of the top gauge (ACCU PRESS) is in the
R green range 3000 psi (206.8427 bar)
- if necessary, pressurize the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. TASK 29-
00-00-863-802).

(2) On the panel 117VU, set the parking brake control switch to OFF.

(3) Pressurize the Blue hydraulic system during the towing operation
(Ref. TASK 29-00-00-863-802).

NOTE : If you energized the aircraft electrical circuits with the

engine, do not pressurize the Blue hydraulic system. The Green
hydraulic system is available through the engine for Normal
braking.

4. Procedure

A. Approximate Towing Loads


(Ref. Fig. 203/TASK 09-10-00-991-013)

(1) When you push the aircraft rearwards with the engines at idle, you
must add the engine thrust resistance to the towing loads.

NOTE : The engine thrust resistance at ground idle is 1500 daN (for

each engine in operation).

(2) Apply these coefficients for the friction between the tires and the
ground:
Dry concrete or asphalt : 0.80
Wet asphalt : 0.75

(1) During towing, the towing angle must not be more than 65 deg. on each
side of the aircraft centerline.

NOTE : The towing angle limits are shown by painted marks on:
____
- the FWD NLG doors and
- the bottom of the main fitting and the sliding rod of the
NLG.

(2) During the towing operations, put:


- one person in the cockpit to operate the brake pedals if necessary
- two persons to monitor the wing tips.

(3) Tow the aircraft smoothly and slowly.

NOTE : The towing speed must not be more than:


____
- 25 km/h (15 mph) with the tow bar,
- 10 km/h (6 mph) if the cargo and/or the passenger doors are
open.

(a) In wind conditions, calculate the permitted towing speed before
towing:

1
_ Measure the wind speed.

2
_ Do a check of aircraft stability (Ref. TASK 05-57-00-200-801).

3
_ Subtract measured wind speed from wind speed limit shown on
the stability curve. This gives the maximum permitted towing
speed on condition that the speed is not more than the speeds
shown above.

NOTE : It is recommended to make turns slowly and smoothly


____
when you tow the aircraft by the NLG. Sudden fast turns
can cause the rupture of the shear pin in the towbar.

(1) When you have completed the towing operation, make sure that the nose
wheels are aligned with the aircraft centerline.

(1) The maximum steering angle in the horizontal plane is 30 degrees on


each side of the aircraft centerline. When the towing is along the
aircraft centerline the nose landing gear keeps the limits.

(2) The maximum angle in the vertical plane is 5 degrees on each side of
the horizontal plane which goes through the towing fitting of the
main gear.

(3) During the towing operations, put:


- one person in the cockpit to operate the brake pedals if necessary
- two persons to monitor the wing tips.

(4) During the towing operations, on the panel 312VU you must monitor the
R pressure on the triple pressure indicator on the top gauge.
- If the pressure is approximately 2000 psi (137.8951 bar),
pressurize again the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. TASK 29-00-00-863-
802).

(5) Tow the aircraft smoothly if possible, keep the tractor aligned with
the aircraft centerline. You can make turns only if the ground
conditions are good.

(1) During towing, the towing angle must not be more than 65 deg. on each
side of the aircraft centerline.

NOTE : The towing angle limits are shown by painted marks on:

- the FWD NLG doors and
- the bottom of the main fitting and the sliding rod of the
NLG.

(2) During the towing operations, put:


- one person in the cockpit to operate the brake pedals if necessary.

(3) Tow the aircraft smoothly and slowly.

NOTE : The towing speed must not be more than:

- 32 km/h (20 mph) with the towbarless tractor,
R - 10 km/h (6 mph) if the cargo and/or the passenger crew doors
R are open.

- if necessary, pressurize the Blue hydraulic system (Ref. TASK 29-

- set the NAV & LOGO switch to OFF
- set the EXT LT/BEACON switch to OFF
- set the INT LT/DOME switch to OFF.

(4) On the panel 612VU:


- disconnect the boomset from its connector.

(5) On the Captain ACP:


- release the VHF1 transmission pushbutton switch.

(6) On the RMP 1:


- set the ON/OFF switch to OFF.

(7) On the panel 925VU:


- disconnect the boomset.

A. Towing

(1) Any one tire is deflated on one or more gears (a maximum of four
deflated tires per aircraft).
- Tow the aircraft by the nose gear only (Ref. TASK 09-10-00-584-
802).
R The maximum permitted lateral angle of the towbar is plus or minus 10
R degrees if one of the nose gear tires is deflated or plus or minus 40
R degrees if both the nose gear tires are inflated.

(2) Any two tires are deflated (one per axle) on any one main gear.
- Tow the aircraft by the nose gear only (Ref. TASK 09-10-00-584-
802).
R The maximum deflection of towbar is plus or minus 10 degrees with
R both the nose gear tires inflated.

(3) Two tires are deflated on the same axle or three tires are deflated
on the main gear.
- Tow the aircraft by the main gears (steered by the nose gear using
the towbar or normal steering control) (Ref. TASK 09-10-00-584-804).
R The maximum nose gear steering angle is plus or minus 50 degrees with
R both the nose gear tires inflated.

(4) Four tires are deflated on the same main gear .


- Tow the aircraft by the main gears with both the nose gear tires
inflated (Ref. TASK 09-10-00-584-804).
No deflection of the towbar is permitted (speed limitation is 1.3
m/sec. (4.26 ft/sec.)).
