Introduction To Ichnology

Micnel Ostias Jene gave a presentation on ichnology to the IST AKPRIND Yogyakarta study club. Ichnology is the study of traces produced by organisms in sediments, including bioturbation, bioerosion, and biodeposition. Traces are physical alterations to substrates created by biological activity. Ichnology examines both the processes by which organisms interact with substrates and the resulting trace fossils. Jene discussed the basic concepts of ichnology, characteristics of trace fossils, ichnotaxonomy which is the classification of trace fossils, and ichnofacies which are trace fossil assemblages indicative of particular environments. Trace fossils provide evidence of organism behavior and paleoenvironments despite the organisms

Basic Concept
• “Ichnlogy involves the study of traces produced by
organisms (both animals and plants) on or within the
substrate, and includes all issues related to bioturbation,
bioerosion and biodeposition (Pemberton et al., 1992a;
Bromley, 1990, 1996).”
5

Study Club, May 8th 2018, IST AKPRIND Yogyakarta

Basic Concept
• Traces are physical objects consisting of previously existing
material (a substrate) that has been altered by biological
activity (Dirk Knaust, 2012).
6

Study Club, May 8th 2018, IST AKPRIND Yogyakarta

Basic Concept
• Ichnology encompasses both the study of the processes
(Interaction between organisms and substrates) and their
resulting products (Their traces themselves -> Trace Fossil).
7

Study Club, May 8th 2018, IST AKPRIND Yogyakarta

Basic Concept
• Ichnology comprises 2 main fields:
• Neoichnology (Modern Traces)
• Paleoichnology (Trace Fossils)
8

Study Club, May 8th 2018, IST AKPRIND Yogyakarta

Basic Concept
• Neoichnology is the study of modern traces in sediments,
and it is an important aspect of paleoichnology as the
present is the key to the past.

Trace Fossils Characteristics

• Trace Fossils Represent Evidence of Behavior

• The Same Organism May Produce More Than One
Ichnotaxon

• The Same Ichnotaxon May be Produce by More Than One

Organism

• Multiple Architects May Produce a Single Architecture

Trace Fossils Characteristics

• Producer Are Commonly Soft-Bodied Animals That Are

Rarely Preserved

• The Same Biogenic Structure May Be Differentally

Preserved in Various Substrate

• Trace Fossils Commonly Have Long Stratigraphic Ranges

Trace Fossils Characteristics

• Trace Fossils Commonly Have Narrow Environmental

Ranges

• Trace Fossils are Rarely Transported

Ichnotaxonomy

▷ a. Ichnotaxobase

al. 2002a, dalam L. A Buatois & M. Gabriela Mangano 2011).

Conclusion

• Ichnology encompasses both the study of the processes

(Interaction between organisms and substrates) and their
resulting products (Their traces themselves -> Trace Fossil).

• Differed From Body-fossils

• Trace Fossils are a manifestation of behavior, which can be
modified by the environment
