LEVEL 2
THEMES / TOPICS:
- Module 1: Imagination & Innovation: U8 Moving Forward
- Module 2: Decisions & Consequences: U12 Consequences & Money.
Description:
As we reflect on environmental problems, we will do research on various green/environmentally sustainable inventions that would
be useful for Colombians.
In small groups (two), we will choose an invention (something for personal, daily use, eg. Crank flashlight, pedal the washing
machine, solar-powered cellphone charger, smart car, water bottle light bulb, etc.).
You will elaborate on your inventions by creating a visual display and present all of your work at a science fair. Through your
presentations, you will explain how the green invention works, what problem it solves, who it will be useful for, etc. Make sure you
present two to three main reasons that explain why the green invention best solves an environmental problem.
Opinions Facts
● Why is the green invention the best solution? ● What problem does it solve?
● How is it going to help the environment? ● How does the green invention work?
● Why do you think society should buy it? ● What positive effects does it have?
● What makes the product different from others? ● What is needed to carry out this project?
● Do you think people will be interested in this ● How could it be adapted for home use?
project? ● What will be the economic implications if we don't use
● Who will it be useful for? the invention?
● What will happen if we don´t solve the environmental
problem?
After your presentations, you must answer questions in a very appropriate manner. Some questions will be provided in advance
and hopefully written with the teacher’s collaboration. Teachers will constantly guide you in your preparations.
STEP 1: With your partner, research environmentally-friendly/ green inventions that would be useful for Colombians / or any other
nationality.
E.g. A Hand Crank Flashlight: A Hand Crank Flashlight uses no batteries and converts your own energy into light. It basically works by
hand cranking a permanent magnet motor, which generates electricity for illuminating the attached LEDs.
SLO 5 – Students will practice asking and answering questions in a series of linked phrases and respond to simple statements.
a) Read Electricity from the sun reading (pg. 108-109) , and answer the questions.

d) Share and describe the existing Green Invention you found on the research. (→ Go back to Step 1)
e) IN YOUR OPINION, CHOOSE ONE EXISTING GREEN INVENTION THAT BEST SOLVES AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM.
CONTINUE DOING RESEARCH.

Step 3:
SLO 3 – Students will be able to identify opinions and distinguish them from facts. → Science Fair presentations.
a) Watch the Video Journal: Solar Cooking (Posted on Brightspace), and answer the questions → Solar Oven is a green invention example.

SLO 6 – Students will give a presentation expressing their opinion with basic support. → Justifying their green invention of choice, science
fair presentations.
a) Make sure your guideline is completed with opinions, facts, future tenses (Will, Going & Present Continuous)
b) Practice your presentations with your partner and ask your teacher and classmates for revision.
c) Is your visual for the Science fair Ready? What are you waiting for?
d) Collaborate to develop questions that will be used in the final presentations. Keep in mind both Opinions and Facts.
o Science Fair Presentation on week 5.. This project is a Science Fair Presentation wherein you present a visual representation of
your green inventions. The teacher will ask follow-up questions to encourage you to use the Target Grammar, Vocabulary &
Pronunciation.
o Vocabulary:
● Unit 8 vocabulary (Plans)
● Unit 12 vocabulary (Money, Animal habitats)

SLO 6 – Students will give a presentation expressing their opinion with basic support. → Justifying their green invention of choice,
- The teacher and students evaluate and reflect on their own projects. (Students reflect on what they did well and what they hope
to improve).
