A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan

in English 8

I. Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students are expected to:
a. identify the different sentence patterns;
b. reflect on the significance of using patterns; and
c. compose sentences using the four basic sentence patterns.

II. Subject Matter


a. Topic: Basic Sentence Structure in English
b. Reference: Basic Sentence Structure by Lynette Pretorius: Academic Language and

c. Materials: Manila paper, pictures, chalk, board

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greeting
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance
5. Checking of Assignment
6. Review

B. Motivation
The teacher will show a series of pattern to the class. The students will then try to
identify what is the correct object to go next to successfully complete the pattern.

C. Lesson Proper
A basic sentence consists of:
Subject
- the person or thing doing the action in the sentence
- can be usually found in the beginning of a sentence
Example:
Person: John, teacher, friend, pirate, Ana
Pronouns: I, you, he, she, we, they
Place: home, Earth, Philippines, school, kitchen, Sta. maria National High School
Thing: elephants, notebook, computer, shoes, dogs
Idea: freedom, love, joy, peace, honor, friendship
Verb
- the word that expresses an action
- can be found next to the subject
Example:
kick, run, hide, bite, smile
“to be” verbs:
is, am, are, was, were, be, been, being
Object
- the person or thing that receives the action or verb
- can be found after the verb

Basic Sentence Pattern in English:


1. Subject + Verb + Object
- the most common.
- Object = receiver of the action.
Examples:
She ate a watermelon.
S V O
Tiredness affects your focus.
S V O
2. Subject + Verb
- a sentence doesn’t have to have an object
- most simple.
Example:
He run.
S V
Ana tripped.
S V
3. Subject + Verb + Adjective
- Adjective adds details to the noun
- describes the subject
Example Adjectives:
Appearance: attractive, beautiful, fancy, handsome, gracefully
Personality: kind, happy, sad, angry, lazy
Size: big, small, massive, large, little, huge
Color: black, green, blue, pink, yellow
Example:

Mark looks handsome.


S V Adj

Jun’s eyes are brown.


S V Adj
4. Subject + Verb + Adverb
- Adverb adds details to the verb
- describes the verb
Example Adverbs:
Frequency: Never, sometimes, always, often, usually
Degree: almost, too, very, hardly, extremely
Place: above, anywhere, under, inside, back, here
Time: Immediately, recently, earlier, tomorrow, yesterday
Manner: patiently, hurriedly, quickly, well, strongly
Example:

I hid my glasses inside the drawer.


SV Adv

The wind blew strongly.


S V Adv
D. Application
The teacher will divide the class into four groups. Each group will be given the same set
of sentences with the Subject + Verb (S+V) pattern. The students need to expand the sentences
using the S+V+O, S+V+Adj, and S+V+Adv patterns.
Example:
“Tom is sleeping.”
S+V+O: Tom is sleeping on the bed.
S+V+Adj: Tom is sleepy.
S+V+Adv: Tom is sleeping peacefully.

1. The kid talked.


2. Ana cried.
3. She sung.
Rubrics:
Sentence Structure – 10pts
Mechanics (Spelling, Grammar and Punctations) – 10pts
Teamwork – 10pts
Total of 30 points.

E. Abstraction
- What is the common sentence structure in English?
- How many are the basic sentence patterns?
* What are they?

F. Valuing
The students will analyze the quote “To understand is to perceive patterns.” by Isaiah
Berlin. They will share their insights about it.

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Identify the pattern used in each sentence.
1. He ate his food fast.
2. The dog chased the kid.
3. The oceans seems angry.
4. The rain fell.
5. I love you.

V. Assignment
On a one-half crosswise:

Write S if the underlined word is a Subject, V if it is a Verb, and O if it is an Object.

____1. Ma’am Rachelle gave us an assignment.

____2. My cat loves fish.

____3. Ren watched a movie last night.

____4. I admire Jun.

____5. Happiness suits you.
