Level 2. Lesson 4 For 19-20 August 2023

This lesson plan introduces students to the formal alphabet, phonetic alphabet, consonants, and vowel sounds. The plan outlines 4 activities: 1) A home check to review past lessons. 2) A word search puzzle to identify words and sounds. 3) Reading short texts containing practiced words. 4) An object search activity where students find objects starting with different sounds/letters and say the corresponding phoneme. An extension "I spy" game hides objects for students to find based on starting sounds. The goal is for students to recognize phonemes, identify objects by sound, and read simple words.

Note to teacher:
Make sure to go at the speed of your slowest student; don’t move on unless everyone understands.

Activity 1. Home check

10min- see what the student learned from past lesson and recap.(alphabets letters and phonemes)

Activity 2. 20mins

Word search Puzzle

SS:
 Give each student a copy of the word search puzzle and a printed picture of words and images to
match (attached to end of this lesson plan).
Show them one example already done so they are clear how to do it
Monitor the students as they complete the puzzle and help them as needed but don’t do it for
them
Once they are finished, write the words from the word search onto the board and have the students
practice the pronunciations and their meanings.

Activity 3: 30 Mins

TST:

Using the short texts (below) and ask the students to read the sentences that contain the words that
they have practiced in the previous activities.

Make sure you sound out and help them with ‘the’

Activity 4: 20 mins
Object Search Activity
SS:
 Divide the class into small groups of 2-3 students.
 Give each group a list of words and ask them to find objects in the classroom that start with
each letter. For example, if the letters are /b/, /f/, and /s/, the students might find a book, a fan,
and a stapler.
 Have the students present their objects to the class and say the phoneme/letter that each
object starts with
 This activity can be made more challenging by asking the students to find objects that have the
phoneme in the middle or at the end of the word.
 Summarise the phonemes learned in the lesson and ask the students to say them.
Use the alphabet on the blackboard as the guide
 Ask the students to say a word that starts with each phoneme
Remember if they get stuck, then they can look in any of their own books for ideas – try not to
give them answers

Extension Activity: 10 mins

Phoneme I Spy

SS -
 Ask the students to close their eyes and count to ten.
 While their eyes are closed, hide an object in the classroom that begins with one of the
phonemes learned in the lesson (e.g., a ball for /b/).
 Ask the students to open their eyes and tell them that you have hidden an object that begins
with a certain sound.
 Ask the students to find the object and bring it to you.
 Once the object is found, have the student identify the sound and the word that starts with that
sound.
 Repeat the activity with different objects and phonemes.

Homework:
Tell the students to find their own words at home that begin with each letter of the phonetic alphabet and
try to write them in their books. -
