PART B (Answer ANY 4 Questions x 15 marks = 60 Marks)

Question 1 (15 Marks Total)

A beam is subjected to the loading as shown in figure Q1. Determine the principal
stresses in the beam at point A.

Figure Q1 A beam subjected to loads.

Question 2 (15 Marks Total)

A thin cylindrical shell with a thickness of 6 mm, and an internal diameter of 25 cm is
subjected to an internal pressure of 5 MPa. It is made from steel plates that are welded
along the 45o seam as shown in figure Q2. Determine (a) the increase in internal
diameter and (b) the normal stress σn perpendicular to the weld and the shearing stress τnt
parallel to the weld. (E=200 GPa, ν=0.3). (15 marks)

Question 3 (15 Marks Total)

A space pin-jointed frame is shown in the figure Q3. Determine the internal forces
carried by members DE, BE, and AE, and state if the member is in tension or in
compression. (P=500 N, b=50 cm) (15 marks)

Figure Q3. A space Pin jointed frame.

Question 4 (15 Marks Total)

(a) In a chemical plant, a thin walled cylindrical pressure vessel made from a titanium
alloy is subjected to occasional surges in internal pressure of up to 10 MPa.
During a routine inspection a 2 mm long crack oriented perpendicular to the hoop
direction is found in the cylinder bore. Should the cylinder be taken out of service
immediately or can this crack be tolerated? The internal radius of the vessel is 10
cm while the wall thickness is 5 mm. KIC =106MN m-3/2 (8 marks)

(b) A bracket of a hydraulic press has been subjected to a cyclic load. A scratch of
0.12 mm exists on the surface of the bracket and the bracket will fail if the crack
length reaches 4.09 mm. If the bracket has to be in operation for a minimum of
2000 cycle, what is the maximum stress that the bracket can be subjected to? Use
C = 4 x10-11, m = 3.54, Kic = 41MNm-3/2, and Y = 1.13. (7 marks)

Question 5 (15 Marks Total)

A beam shown in Figure Q5a and Q5b is made of steel (E = 205 GPa, α = 11.9 x 10 -6K-1,
σall = 20 MPa). The beam is 8 m long and has a cross section of 20 mm x 60 mm.
Knowing that the temperature is constant along the length, the bottom surface has
temperature of 20ºC, determine;
(i) the temperature at the top surface, (5 marks)
(ii) the maximum shear stress, and (5 marks)
(iii) displacement at point H (x = 2.5 m and y = 15 mm). (5 marks)

The compressed air tank AB is shown in the figure Q6 below. The inner diameter of the
tank is 450 mm and the wall thickness of 6 mm. If the gauge pressure in the tank is 1.2
MPa and the tank is made of aluminium alloy (σyt = 260 MPa), calculate;
a) The maximum normal stress and maximum in-plane shearing stress at point a.
b) The factor of safety at point a using von-mises stress criteria and maximum shear
stress criteria.
