SHEET METAL
Objective:-
Design an object using sheet metal
Solution:-
- Top plane, sketch, Draw a circle of diameter “20mm”.
- Make a Geometry like this, as shown in the picture.
- All corners have been fileted to “10mm”.
- SIde dimensions are “40mm”
- The 2 upper Horizontal lines have the relation collinear and equal.
- 1 of the Horizontal and Vertical lines have the relation equal.
- Make 6 circles of diameter “10 mm” on all the centers of the filet and give them the
relation equal.
- Go to Sheet metal and select Base Flange/Tab.
Sheet Metal :- allows you to design from scratch or convert a 3D part to sheet metal and flatten
your design for manufacturing.
Base Flange/Tab :- When you add a base flange feature to a SOLIDWORKS part, the part is
marked as a sheet metal part. Bends are added wherever appropriate, and sheet metal specific
features are added to the FeatureManager design tree.
- Keep thickness “1mm”. Tick the reverse direction Box.
- Keep the K-factor to be 0.5
K-Factor :- a ratio that represents the location of the neutral sheet with respect to the thickness
of the sheet metal part.
- Give a color of your choice to the sheet so it's more visible.
- Draw a vertical line as shown in the image at a distance “4mm” from the right
- Choose Sketched Bend, select the bigger face, keep the angle at “45 deg” and the
radius at “4mm”.
- Draw another vertical line at the right side with the same distance “4mm” from the top
face.
- Select the new line and choose the sketched bend again, keep at “45 deg” and radius at
“4mm”, and select the larger face as reference.
- Make another line for the top face now with the same distance “4mm”.
- Select that line, and sketched bend again at the same radius but keep the angle
“90 deg” Reverse direction, choosing the center of the sheet as reference for the
bend.
- Choose inside corners and filet to “2mm”.
- Also filet the circles to “0.75mm” by selecting them all at once.
- You can also go to flatten, this will give you a flat view of the whole sheet, something like
this.
- Select Sheet Metal Gusset, select the 90 deg bended face and the center face.
- Keep offset as “20mm” so the gusset is at the center.
- Keep the Depth at “6mm”, move down to dimensions and keep width as “8mm”.
- Now choose Sheet metal Gusset again and repeat the procedure for the center face and
one of the other side faces.
- Keep the depth “4mm” and width “5mm” this time.
- Mirror this gusset on the right plane.

Machine Part lab 3
LAB 3
Objective:-
Design a Machine Part
Solution:-
- Select top plane, make a center rectangle of width “54mm”, and length “94mm”
- Select Sketch filet, and select all corners. Filet parameters are “8mm”
- Extrude Boss to “10mm”.
- Normal to Top Plane, enable sketch, and make 4 circles.
- Press Ctrl, and give the relation equal to all circles.
- Select one circle, one curved corner and give relation co-radial
Co-radial :- The items share the same CenterPoint and radius
- Do the same procedure with the rest of the circles and curved corners.
- We don’t need to give the diameter of the circle, as it will be auto-adjusted.
- Choose Extrude Boss, Extrude all circles to “2mm”. “Outwards”
- Select Hole Wizard, keep hole type as “hole”, keep standard as ANSI Metric, choose
type as drill sizes, and then keep the size of the diameter as “8.5mm”.
- Select the center of all the circles to make the hole.
Hole Wizard :- a tool inside SolidWorks that allows you to quickly create holes within a part or
assembly without the need of drawing or using multiple features.
- Select right plane, and enable sketch. Make 3 circles above the object following the
origin.
- Set Diameters of circles as “38mm”, “50mm”, and “60mm”.
- Set the distance from the bottom line of the object to the center of the circles as
“60mm”.
- Extrude the center circle at mid plane to “68mm”.
- On the 60mm, circle draw lines connecting the top, right and left positions through
corners which are outside the circle.
- Extrude at mid plane to “24mm”
- Choose front plane, sketch, and make a dome and center line like this,
- Now extrude at mid plane, “40mm”
- Make 2 lines from the dome “24mm”and ”8mm” one from the center of the circle
- Choose Extruded Cut, Through all, flip side to cut
- Mirror, choose the plane as the front plane and mirror the extruded cut.
- Choose Direct Editing Tab, delete the inner circle face, through using delete face.
- Top plane, sketch, make center rectangle of length “56mm” and width “8mm”
- Extrude up to the body.
- Right plane, sketch make 3 lines from the upper body to the lower body, of
“20mm””20mm”.
- Choose Rib, to “8mm”
- Mirror, at front plane this new feature.
- Select hole wizard, hole, custom size as ”11mm” and do through all.
- Place the hole at the center of the dome.
- Select front plane, make a line from center of the circle till the top
- Extruded cut through all, select a thin feature “3mm” at mid plane.
- Change the color of the part through the appearance feature if you want.
