IS THE BARBIE MOVIE ABOUT WOMEN, MEN AND GENDER EQUALITY?


¿La película de Barbie es acerca de mujeres, hombres e igualdad de
género?
Sabemos que mujeres y hombres somos diferentes y eso no constituye un problema.
Entre las mujeres y entre los hombres existen diferencias, por ejemplo, de cultura, edad,
nivel educativo, situación económica, entre otras. Las diferencias se convierten en un
problema cuando de ellas se derivan desigualdades en el acceso a derechos, es decir,
cuando en virtud de las diferencias se establecen relaciones de poder que afectan las
condiciones de las personas para tener una vida digna.
El principal objetivo es que luego de ver la película “Barbie” se generen preguntas sobre
la igualdad de género incentivando primeramente la lectura (en inglés) y promoviendo
la participación respecto de sus experiencias y creencias relacionadas con la
construcción de roles. El objetivo implica poder escuchar, respetar las diferencias y
disensos, y también poder generar acuerdos y consensos sobre los temas.

Barbie movie is about the Barbie fashion doll made by the American toy company Mattel.
The toy was created by American businesswoman Ruth Handler and launched in 1959. It
has become one of the best- selling toys ever mad. Over a million Barbie dolls have been
made worldwide. Since the 1980, Barbie has been the star of video games, animated movies
and TV series. In the new movie, Barbie unexpectedly leaves her near-perfect of animated
world of Barbieland to live in the human world. Movie experts say that “Barbie” is an original
movie that addresses different kinds of themes.

What does a movie about Barbie, a doll often associated with objectifying women,
have to say about gender equality?

What is gender equality? Gender Equality is defined as a state where individuals and groups
can have the same opportunity, rights, and responsibilities over their lives, absent of
discrimination or bias on the basis of gender. Everyone is affected by gender inequality, it
impacts people of all ages and backgrounds. Gender equality prevents violence against
women and girls. It’s essential for economic prosperity. Societies that value women and
men as equal are safer and healthier. Gender equality is a human right. Everyone benefits
from gender equality. Gender equality equates to basic human rights.
