Reading
1 Award 1 mark each for: a) to inform in an entertaining way and give one
viewpoint; b) to use facts to present both sides of an argument. [2]
2 Award 2 marks for any two of the following: interesting heading; questions;
factual information and persuasive language in the first paragraph to draw
the reader in. [2]
3 Award 1 mark if the learner has pointed out that the conclusion summarises
both sides and then gives the best outcome based on the evidence. [1]
4 Award 1 mark each for: a) in the 1880s; b) because fuel-powered cars, which
were invented at around the same time, were cheaper and quicker. [2]
5 Award 1 mark for any pro and 1 mark for any con. [2]

Reading
1 Learners’ own answers. Award 1 mark for each correctly summarised sentence. [3]
2 Award 1 mark for each of the following:
Lucy: Couldn’t bear to look.
Harry: Put his fingers in his ears.
Jem: Stared in horrified fascination. [3]
3 Award 3 marks for any three sensible suggestions. For example: Chitty is no
ordinary van/car; time travel; impossible inventions (Chronojuster); dinosaurs. [3]
4 Award 1 mark for identifying that the brackets are to include additional
information. [1]
5 Award 1 mark for a) to create suspense as the speaker trails off; Award 1 mark
for b) to create a pause in the dialogue to give the impression of disjointed
speaking [2]
6 Award 1 mark for a) invented word – it would not be in the dictionary;
Award 1 mark for b) because Chrono is a prefix, it means it is something to do
with adjusting time; Award 1 mark for c) adjuster – so a time adjuster [3]
7 Award 1 mark for each correct answer: one for contraction and one for
possession, for example: paragraph 1 Chitty’s (possession); paragraph 2
can’t (contraction). [2]
8 Award 1 mark for identifying that it is quoting something inside dialogue,
so single speech marks inside double ones. [1]
9 Award 1 mark for a) Third person – for example: Chitty lurched into reverse.
Mum was thrown back into her seat. No first-person pronouns ; Award 2 marks
for b) Narrative is mainly past tense as it is recounting events in the past; dialogue
is mainly present tense because it is reflecting the words as they were said ;
Award 1 mark for c) Learners’ own answers, but likely to be informal as a lot of
it is dialogue. Answers must be backed up. [4]
10 Award 1 mark for a) New paragraph every time a new speaker speaks and a lot
of it is dialogue; Award 1 mark for b) It creates a sense of panic and confusion
as the scenery/time rushes by and it reflects their reactions. [2]
