1. How many terms of the arithmetic sequence 5, 7, 9, …. should be added to get 140?
Solution
∴ First term, x1 = a + b = 5
Second term, x2 = 2a + b = 7
⇒a+a+b=7
⇒a+5=7
⇒a=7−5=2
b=5−a=5−2=3
Sn = 140
⇒ + 4 = 140 + 4
⇒ n = 10
Solution
(a) 6,10,14,....
Since t2−t1=t3−t2
Common difference, d=10−6=4
First term a=6
Sn=n22a+(n−1)d=n22×6+(n−1)4=n212+4n−4=n24n+8
=n(2n+4)
2n2+4n
(b) For the sum to be 240 from the beginning
240=n2+4n
⇒240=n(2n+4)
⇒240=n(2n+4)
⇒120=n(n+2)
⇒n2+2n−120=0
⇒n2+12n−10n−120=0
⇒n(n+12)−10(n+12)=0
⇒(n+12)(n−10)=0
∴ n=−12,10
10 terms should be added to make the sum to be 240
(c) To make the sum to be 240, 'n' should be natural number.
250=n(2n+4)
⇒125=n(n+2)
⇒n2+2n−125=0
⇒n2+n−125=0
n=−1√ 1−4×125 2
Since n is not a natural number, therefore the term 250 cannot exist in the series.
The sum of first n terms of an arithmetic sequence is 5n2+2n.
(a) What is the sum of first two terms of this sequence?
(b) Write the first two terms of the sequence.
Solution
Given
Sn=3n2+6n
Sn=n2×(a+l)
3n2+6n=n2×(a+l)
l = 6n+12-a
