EMG 2504: CAD/CAM
Exercise
Figure 1 shows orthographic drawings of components of a valve train.
(a) Using Autodesk Inventor, construct solid models of the machine components and as-
semble them in their relative positions.
(b) The cam is powered by a 1 kW motor running at 720 rpm. The surface of the valve head
is subjected to a pressure with an equivalent force of 500N. Using dynamic simulation,
estimate the maximum resultant contact force on the follower and valve.
(c) Export the dynamic conditions in (b) to finite element analysis (FEA). At the loading
condition in (b), estimate the maximum stress on these components using Von-Mises
Criterion.
(d) Is the design of the components safe? What considerations would you take in optimiz-
ing the design of these components?
Assignment
Introduce the following modifications:
Provide a motor and a suitable belt drive to run the valve.
Modify the cam shaft in order to accommodate the belt pulley.
Introduce key-ways in the the motor and cam shaft in order to produce a positive
drive.
